Elendil

Elendil was wise, valiant, and majestic, but not proud. These character traits were inherited by his grandson, Elendur and a distant descendant, Aragorn II.

Elendil was handsome and nicknamed Tall, because he was almost half a rank taller than a human (that is, about 241 cm, based on the fact that the two ranks ― "human height" ― were about 193 cm), he was considered the tallest of those who escaped during the Overthrow. Like most of the descendants of Elros, Elendil was dark-haired and gray-eyed.

Life in Numenor Elendil was born in Numenor in the year 3119 of the Second Epoch and was the only child of Amandil, Lord of Andunie. Like his father, Elendil was a good sailor. When the Lord of Darkness, Sauron, captured by Ar-Farazon, subjugated the courtiers and the Council of the Scepter (3265 A.D.), Amandil and his family were expelled from Armenelos and returned to Romenna (the harbor of the Faithful on the east coast). Like his father, Elendil was the leader of the Faithful Numenorians ― those who wanted to preserve friendship with the Valar and the elves, and now did not succumb to the influence of Sauron.In 3309, V. E. Ar-Farazon, under the influence of Sauron, decided to go to war on Valinor in order to conquer immortality. Amandil found out about this and was horrified, so he called Elendil and initiated his son into his decision to get to Aman and ask the Valar for help and forgiveness. Elendil replied to his fatherWill you betray the King? You know yourself, they accuse us of being traitors and informers, although until today there was not a word of truth in these accusations."

Amandil replied that it was better to betray loyalty to the king, but to save dunedain from the liar Sauron. As a result, Amandil decided to secretly go to Aman so that those who remained on the island would not be punished for his transgression; before leaving, he ordered Elendil to prepare the ships of the Faithful in Romenne in case of forced flight from Numenor.

Elendil refused to obey Ar-Farazon's orders and join his armada. After the departure of the king, Sauron ordered his servants to capture Elendil and put him on fire in the Temple of Melkor. However, Elendil eluded the minions of the Lord of Darkness and sailed with the Faithful from the shores of Numenor, anchoring in the distance. Thus, during the Overthrow of Numenor (3319 A.D.), the ships of the Faithful did not end up next to the island going to the bottom.

Elendil had four ships out of nine under his personal command, and they were carried to Lyndon, where the king of the Noldor, Gil-galad, assisted him. Later, Elendil ascended the Loon River and founded the kingdom of Arnor (the Northern Kingdom) beyond Ered Luin, while his people settled in Eriador along the banks of the Loon and Berenduin rivers. The main city of the Northern Kingdom was Annuminas on the shore of Lake Nenuial; the Numenorians also settled in Fornoste, on the Northern Hills, in Cardolan, on the hills of Rudaur, erected towers on Emin Beraid (it is also said that the towers of Emin Beraid were built not by the Numenorians, but by Gil-galad for their friend Elendil) and on the hill of Amon Sul. Elendil became High King of Dunedain and settled in Annuminas. Elendil's sons also survived the storm and founded the Southern Kingdom. ― Gondor. Elendil was in charge of three of the seven palantirs brought from the Island (and Isildur and Anarion received two each): initially, the Stones were given to Amandil, Elendil's father, by the elves, and were the integral property of his heirs. Elendil placed these palantiras in towers on Emin Beraid, on Amon Sul, and in Annuminas.

In 3429, Sauron attacked Gondor and captured Minas Itil. Defeated, Isildur went to his father for help, while Anarion defended himself in Osgiliath.

Gil-galad and Elendil gathered a council, where they concluded an alliance of humans and elves against Sauron, called the Last Alliance. After that, the gathering of a huge army of elves and humans began (3430 A.D.). It was said that Elendil was waiting for the approach of Gil-galad's troops from the West, standing on top of the watchtower of Amon Sul. In 3431 A.D., the troops moved to Imladris, where they lingered a little. Elendil and Gil-galad then crossed the Misty Mountains, after which they were joined by the army of the dwarves of Moria. Then Anduin was crossed, and already there the armies of Lothlorien and the elves of Mirkwood under the command of Amdir and Orofer joined the troops of the Last Alliance. After that, the combined army headed down the eastern shore of Anduin and, meeting with the troops of Gondor, finally reached the plain of Dagorlad in front of the gates of Mordor. There, the host of the Last Alliance entered into battle with the troops of Sauron (3434 A.D.).
