Varg is said to have been a member of the neo-Nazi White Aryan Resistance (Hvit Arisk Motstand) and to have had connections with other neo-Nazi and neo-pagan organizations, although he denies any connections to neo-Nazism. According to some researchers, Vikernes was greatly influenced by the Norwegian collaborationist Vidkun Quisling, in particular his ideology of universism, which combined pantheism with Nietzscheanism. On the album Dauði Baldrs, the musician's name is listed as Varg Kvisling Larsson Vikernes. As Vikernes states in Varg's Speeches, he is descended from a woman named Susanna Malena Quisling, who lived in the 19th century,[19] which may also explain the addition of "Quisling" to his name.

The Varg Speeches contain numerous anti-Semitic, racist and anti-Christian statements. Vikernes forms his own historical-racial concept based on the Old Norse "Song of Riga", where non-European peoples belong to the race of descendants of "slaves". At the same time, he uses the term "Aryan race", which includes primarily light-pigmented Europeans with the first or second blood group, who are dolicho- or mesocephalic.

Varg Vikernes is known for his active work aimed at reviving pre-Christian beliefs and worldviews of all European nations in general, and Germanic nations in particular, due to the greater authenticity of Scandinavian mythology and paganism. In his publications, he has repeatedly written that Christianity is a Jewish religion imposed from above and alien to European nations, and that their true faith is paganism.
