Inej Ghafa is a member of the Dregs gang and one of the main characters in the Six of Crows duology. In the Dregs gang, she performs espionage on behalf of Kaz Brekker. Inej is a Suli, so she grew up performing with her family as an acrobat.

Biography Inej's family were traveling acrobats, and she grew up traveling around Ravka in Suli caravans and performing with the family. As a child, she learned to walk the high rope barefoot with her father and cousins, and during that time, she only fell once. She was far more comfortable at heights than anyone else in the family, and she loved to walk in the air.

A few days before her 14th birthday, she was with her family on the west coast near Os Kervo, performing at a carnival. Inej was awakened from her sleep and captured by slavers in the early morning hours, then sold to Tanta Helen, the owner of a pleasure house in Ketterdam, where she was forced to work in the Menagerie as an indentured servant.

When Inej first met Kaz Brekker, she overheard him talking to Helen, asking her about her clients. Inej later approached Kaz and offered to help him, but he did not respond and left. Kaz returned the next day to buy her Contract from Helen, and gave Inej the choice of joining the Dregs or not. Inej joined the gang a few days after her fifteenth birthday. Sometime later, Kaz gave Inej her first knife, taught her how to best crack a safe and pick pockets, and named her Ghost.

When Nina Zenik arrived in Ketterdam, Inej broke into Nina's room at the Emerald Palace in the middle of the night and offered her membership in the Dregs. Inej earned Nina's trust by being only a few months younger than her and by being a Ravkan, and then convinced Nina to join the Dregs.

Six of Crows Inej watches the negotiations between the Black Tips and the Dregs. She climbs onto the roof of the Barter Church and prevents city guard Bert Van Daal from shooting the Dregs. After the negotiations are over, Inej fires Royakke from the Raven Club on Kaz's orders. When Kaz returns to Klepka to report to Per Haskell on the task, Inej watches their conversation from a hidden grate in the second-floor closet. She then follows Kaz to his room, where Kaz explains that they have been hired to work for Jan Van Eck.

Inej, dressed as the Grey Imp, arrives at Hellgate Prison for the Hell Show separately from Kaz and Nina. Inej sizes up Matthias Helvar and dresses him as the Beastly Comedy so they can escape Hellgate.

While in the Western Circlet buying supplies for the journey to Fjerda, Inej is accosted by Tante Helen. Shaken and confused, Inej flees to the harbor, and quickly becomes involved in the ensuing fight on the docks. Omen, one of the Black Spikes, catches her and stabs her in the side; she manages to hit him as well, but Inej is gravely wounded. Inej prepares to commit suicide to avoid capture, but Kaz finds her and carries her to the schooner. On the way, she falls unconscious from her wound. Nina cares for Inej on the Ferolind for three days before Inej awakens. Through conversations on the ship, Inej learns a little about Jesper and Kaz's lives. After the Ferolind docks, the Crows travel north to Fjerda, Nina attempting to teach Inej the Fjerdan language.

The Crows reach Djerholm and complete their infiltration preparations, while Inej and Mattias discuss the meaning of "home" and Nina Zenik. As they ambush and enter the prison van, Inej notices Kaz's panic over contact with human skin and helps calm him down by talking to him. At the Ice Yard prison, the Crows realize that the incinerator is now running during the day, ruining their escape plan. However, Wylan finds Inej's Fabricator-made slippers and Kaz's gloves in the laundry room, and Inej begins to climb the incinerator shaft. However, her shoes begin to melt and the heat is unbearable, and Inej considers falling and giving up.

As the rain begins to cool Inej and the incinerator shaft, Inej decides what she wants to do with her future: destroy the slavers who supply the pleasure houses by sea. With a new sense of purpose, Inej climbs to the top of the shaft and secures a rope so the rest of the Crows can climb up. Jesper and Nina heal her feet, which have fused with the rubber of her shoes. However, the prison is under a Yellow Protocol alarm, preventing the Crows from passing the checkpoints to reach the White Island.

Inej invites her and Nina to enter the Menagerie, disguised as a Suli and Kael respectively. Inej is detained at a checkpoint, where she meets Helen, who recognizes Inej. Inej strangles Helen and steals her diamond necklace before Fjerda guards take her back through the prison gates. Jesper and Wylan free Inej from the guards, and Inej gives Helen's diamond to her teammates to make a drill. After they cut a hole in a window, Inej jumps through it and lands on the roof of one of the tanks, which she uses to destroy the glass, and the three of them crash through the wall of the Ice Yard in the tank.

Back on the Ferolind, Inej and Nina discuss their plans for the future. Inej and Kaz discuss the state of their relationship; Kaz asks Inej to stay with him.

Kaz asks Inej to stay with him in Ketterdam, but Inej is not willing to settle for so little.

When they return to Ketterdam, Inej, Kaz, Jesper, Mattias, and Wylan (disguised as Kuwei Yul-Bo) are sent to Velgeluk to trade with Van Eck. Van Eck realizes that Kaz is worried about Inej, and she is captured by one of his Squallers to use as leverage against Kaz.

The Corrupt Kingdom After being captured by Van Eck's Squallers, Inej wakes up bound and blindfolded. She notices a tiny vent and begins refusing to eat in order to make herself small enough to fit through it. Inej worries that Kaz will not trade her for Kuwei Yul-Bo. Adem Bazhan brings her food and tries to talk to her, but Inej generally refuses to talk. Using shards of a broken bowl, Inej cuts her bonds and climbs through the vent, eventually appearing in Van Eck's home theater on Eil Comedy. However, Van Eck is waiting for her with guards, who drag her onto a prop table while he interrogates her about the locations of the Scum's hideouts. Inej refuses, and Van Eck orders a guard to break her legs with a steel hammer. A terrified Inej tells him that Kaz will not bargain unless she can climb walls and be a spy anymore; Van Eck agrees and takes her back to her room with a promise to return tomorrow. Inej curses Bajan that he will be abandoned by the Suli gods. Inej decides to tell Van Eck the location of old, unused Dregs hideouts. Van Eck realizes this is a bluff and tells her that Kaz is heading to Eil Comedy; Inej worries for Kaz and her friends. However, a servant boy delivers news of Alice Van Eck's kidnapping along with a ransom note from Kaz. Inej stops worrying, breaks Van Eck's nose, and threatens to kill his unborn child with Alice.

At noon the next day, Van Eck brings Inej, shackled, to Goodmeadbridge. When Van Eck reveals his ruse and calls the city guard, Kaz quickly frees Inej. She jumps off the bridge into a flower boat, Kaz dresses her as Mr. Crimson from The Beastly Comedy, and the two jump back onto the bridge. After escaping and blowing up the brothels set up by the Hergoods, Kaz takes her to a safe house in the warehouse district. Kaz asks if she is hurt, but Inej does not tell him what she told Van Eck to keep him from hurting her. She rests for a few hours before Kaz returns and takes her to Blackveil Island, where the rest of the Crows are waiting.

The crows update her on recent events, including the arrival of Jesper's father and Kaz selling his holdings in Fifth Harbor to Pekka Rollins. Kaz reveals his plan to have Inej climb the Van Eck silos in Sweet Reef to infect them with Wylan's chemical weevil. When Nina wants to smuggle Ketterdam's Grisha out of the reach of the herguds, Inej sides with her and Kaz agrees to carry out Nina's plan. That night, Inej leaves the Black Veil with Kaz. They intercept Per Haskell and he tries to take Inej on another job, but she eludes him. Kaz negotiates with Haskell for a delay. Inej and Kaz continue to the Barter Church, where they climb to the top to inspect the Van Eck mansion; Inej does further reconnaissance and reports back to Kaz while they are in the gondola. Afterwards, they return to the Black Veil, and Inej tells Kaz that Van Eck planned to crush her legs through torture, and he admits that he would still come back for her even if she was no longer a Spectre.

Inej tells the Crows of her plan to get her own ship. She and Nina then head to the Van Eck silos in Sweet Reef, where Inej climbs a silo, destroys the sugar with Wylan's Chemical Weevil, and walks along a high wire to another silo. She is nearly pushed into the decaying sugar by Dunyasha Lazareva, who attacks Inej on the roof of the silo, then follows her along the high wire and hits her with throwing stars. Inej almost reaches the wire, but Dunyasha cuts the line, causing Inej to fall. Corpses under Nina's control catch Inej in a net; Dunyasha leaves, unwilling to face Nina's army.

Kaz and Wylan meet the girls at the silos and head to the Geldrenner Hotel to regroup. After Kaz and Jesper's argument, Inej talks to Jesper and tells him about the Suli people's apology: "Mati en sheva elu" - "This action will have no echo." As the Crows reconvene to discuss Kaz's plan to auction Kuwei, Inej tells them about her meeting with Dunyasha. Inej begins bandaging her wounds in the hotel bathroom, and Kaz asks her to help him plot a route to Klyopka across the rooftops. Kaz also reveals that he has paid off her contract and refuses her contract.

Kaz carefully bandages Inej's wounds, and when he touches her, Inej again soothes him with her voice. He kisses her skin, but immediately suffers a panic attack due to his haphephobia and refuses to tell Inej what happened to him. Against Kaz's orders, Inej follows him to the Riveting, where she hides in the rafters and watches as Kaz fights the Dregs. When it seems he will be killed, Inej prepares to intervene in the fight and kill the gang members, but Kaz signals her to remain hidden and completes the coup of his own gang.

Inej delivers a letter to Zoya Nazyalenskaya and Zhenya Safina, spies on the embassies, and retrieves one of the leaflets announcing the auction of Kuwei. On the morning of the auction, she climbs the Barter church to plant explosives and hide Jesper's rifle. From the tip of Gezen's thumb, Inej watches the auction proceed until Dunyasha appears on the roof, demanding a fight. Inej follows Kaz's advice to look for Dunyasha's weakness, and manages to seriously wound the mercenary. Dunyasha pretends to give in, then throws a special powder into Inej's eyes, blinding her. Inej remembers which roof tiles are loose and forces Dunyasha to step on one; the mercenary falls to her death.

She runs to the chapel and takes Jesper's rifle. After Jesper shoots Kuwei, Inej and Kaz are locked in the chapel by Pekka Rollins. Inej prepares to fight Rollins, but Kaz holds her hand; he reveals that he buried Pekka's son alive and forces Rollins to beg at his feet for the child's life. Inej is horrified until she realizes that Kaz was bluffing and in fact has no idea where Pekka's son is and has done nothing to him. Kaz tells her that he staged a fake plague outbreak in the Menagerie with Nina's help, displacing Tante Helen. Inej and Kaz watch as Zoe revives Kuwei. Inej returns to find Matthias dying in Nina's arms, and she comforts Nina and helps her let Matthias go to reunite with her god. At Van Eck's house, the Crows convert the boat into a barge for the bodyguards to transport Matthias' body, as well as Kuwei, Nina and Colm, out of Ketterdam and hold a small funeral for Matthias.

Inej spends the next three weeks at the Van Eck house with Jesper and Wylan, exploring the warships and gathering information on the slavers. One night, she finds a note from Kaz in her room, and the next morning, she meets him at Fifth Harbor. As Inej prepares to say goodbye to Kaz, he shows her the warship he bought her, docked in the harbor. They

As Inej prepares to say goodbye to Kaz, he shows her the warship he bought her, docked in the harbor. They hold hands. Kaz then shows her that he brought her parents to Ketterdam to see her again, and she cries with happiness.

Some time later, Inej finds Pekka Rollins' country house and sneaks in at night. She begins to cut out his heart, then leaves him with a threat to finish the job if Rollins ever returns to Ketterdam.

Reign of the Wolves Inej continued hunting slavers on her ship, the Ghost. At one point, she coated two slavers in tar and crow feathers and dumped them at the entrance to the Stadthalle with a note pinned to the captain's chest stating that one of the Trade Council members, Gert van Werent, was trading slaves. Nikolai Lantsov introduces Inej to Zoe at the Queen's coronation. She nearly identifies Alina Starkov, but Nikolai takes Inej away to meet Linnea Opier and talk about ships and guns. After the ceremony, Inej leaves Ravka with Nina and Hannah Broom.

Appearance Inej has bronze skin and "oily black" hair, which she usually wears in a tight braid, but when it is down, it is very long. Her body is described as angular, with a slight frame. Inej wears a padded vest, breeches, and a tunic. When on missions for Kaz, she wears a hood. Her eyes are dark brown, almost black.

Personality But what about the rest of us? What about the rootless and the untalented, the invisible girls? We learn to hold our heads up like we're wearing a crown. We learn to find magic in the mundane. That's how ordinary people, the unchosen, the ones without royal blood in their veins, survived. Even if the world doesn't owe you anything, you still demand something from it. Inej. The Corrupt Kingdom, Chapter 35

Inej is known mostly for her reserved nature. She is incredibly strong mentally, and pursues her goals without hesitation. She is calm and morally strong, and is not afraid to speak her mind when she feels it is necessary. She is skeptical of most people, but is not outwardly cruel, and is willing to offer her friendship to those who have proven themselves to be good people. Inej honors the customs of her people, often repeating Suli proverbs as advice and answers to questions from the Ravens. She feels safest when carrying knives, preferably her own, and finds solace in the power of her title, "Ghost."

Equipment Inej has custom-made leather slippers with a rough rubber sole made by the Fabricator. They fit her perfectly and can grip any surface. However, her slippers melted in the Ice Court's incinerator. She also has brass knuckles on her right thigh, climbing spikes, and knee pads for crawling and climbing. The pads also conceal blades that are activated by a trigger on her ankles.

Inej has many knives, all named after saints. The ones hidden in her forearms are quickly released: Sankt-Peter on her right hand, her first knife given to her by Kaz, and Sankta-Alina, a knife with a bone handle.

Sankta Maria and Sankta Anastasia sit on her thighs, Sankta Vladimir in one of her boots, and Sankta Lizaveta (with an engraved rose on the handle) on her belt.

When Inej leaves Ketterdam, Kaz gives her a warship called the Ghost, which she uses to hunt slavers.

Capabilities Due to her acrobatic background, Inej has excellent climbing skills, agility, and body coordination. She also has a gift for stealth, never making a sound when she moves. Kaz noted that she doesn't even have a scent. She is deadly with her knives and can kill or incapacitate if necessary.

The Dregs are a gang operating in Ketterdam. They were run by Per Haskell until Kaz Brekker, one of his lieutenants, staged a coup.

Gang members wear a tattoo of a crow and a cup on their forearm.

Advertisement Story For many years, Per Haskell led the Dregs gang. They were considered "a laughing stock, a bunch of street kids, scruffy shell game beggars, and petty crooks living in a run-down house in the worst part of the Barrel."[1] Kaz joined the gang and made it competitive by giving the Dregs real territory in the Barrel, fixing up the Stave, building the Raven Club, and building the Fifth Harbor. Some of the Dregs, especially the younger members recruited by Kaz, believed that Kaz was the one who really ran the gang, as he ran many of their important operations.

The Corrupt Kingdom Per Haskell sided with Pekka Rollins and the Dime Lions along with the rest of the Dregs against Kaz after Jan Van Eck claimed that Kaz had kidnapped his son Wylan Van Eck. After a brutal fight with many Dregs, Kaz seized control of the gang and ousted Haskell. Under Kaz's leadership, the Dregs' holdings grew significantly, even extending to the Roof.

Review The Dregs operate in several areas, including the Raven Club. They control Fifth Harbor and all ships that enter it, as well as their goods. The gang members sleep and live in the Rivet. The Dregs have several lieutenants, the most prominent of whom is Kaz Brekker, until he takes over the leadership completely.

Facts Inej Gafa is the only known member of the gang who doesn't have a tattoo. She didn't want to be tagged again after the Menagerie. They are called "The Dregs" because they were at the bottom of the Barrel. Leigh Bardugo said the Misfits philosophy is "eat or be eaten."

The Menagerie, or House of Exotics, is a pleasure house in the West Hoop of Ketterdam, run by Tante Helen.

Review The menagerie looks like a multi-tiered cage, reminiscent of a zoo or a circus. It is over two stories high, with gold bars placed widely on the windows. It contains a gilded drawing room, visible from the street, where Helen holds court. Helen's salon, which features a silk armchair, a mirror over the fireplace, and a desk, is where she beats girls who misbehave.

The Suli Lynx's bedroom is decorated like a fake Suli caravan, complete with purple silk and incense.

Cultures The Menagerie advertises its exotic beauties - girls from foreign countries who are dressed as animals from their country of origin. The girls who work at the Menagerie are not called by their real names, but rather by the name of the corresponding animal. Although the girls come and go, the animals remain the same.

The girl from Fjerda is known as the wolf. She is tall, has blond hair, and wears silver furs. The Kaelian girl is known as a mare because of her red hair. Her hooded cloak is adorned with a chestnut bun on top of her head. Her dress resembles blue-green scales that flow into a shimmering fan at the bottom, giving the impression of a mermaid. The Ravkan girl is known as the fox. The Shu girl is known as a snake. She wears red scales embroidered with beads. The girl from the Southern Colonies is known as the Leopard. The Suli girl is known as the lynx because of her brown skin. She dresses in purple silks, has spots painted on her shoulders, eyeliner around her eyes, and bells on her ankles. The Zem girl is known as the fawn for her large dark eyes. Her hooded cloak is decorated with soft ears and delicate white spots. Other animals include ravens and stoats. The girls who work at the Menagerie have a peacock tattoo on the inside of their left forearm.

Story Helen Van Houden gets some of her girls from slavers, though some come to her voluntarily. She makes them sign contracts written in Kerch, and makes sure the value of the contract increases, not decreases. Girls hired by the Menagerie can be purchased for other brothels or for personal use.

Inej Gafa was forced to work in the Menagerie for a year after being kidnapped by slavers. Kaz Brekker recognized her talent and bought her contract from Helen.

Six of Crows The Menagerie sends a delegation to the Ringkella celebration at the Ice Court in Fjerda. Inej and Nina Zenik disguise themselves as brothel members, Suliika and Kaelka respectively, to gain access to the center of the Ice Court.

The Corrupt Kingdom After the Menagerie is revealed to be the site of a plague outbreak caused by Kaz and Nina, the town closes the pleasure house and barricades the street around it. Helen misses a month's rent.

Grisha is a person who practices the Small Science.

Grisha are divided into three orders: Corporal, Ethereal, and Substantial, with each order further divided into special groups, but sometimes among the Grisha there appear carriers of unusually rare abilities, for example, to summon light, like Alina Starkova, or darkness, like the Darkling. Both are classified as Ethereals and included in the Ethereal order.

Ravkan Grisha Most Grisha show their powers at a young age. A special test is used to determine whether children have special powers. To detect talent, the Grisha who tests them uses pain, but the test can be fooled by inflicting other pain on oneself to distract oneself. If a child shows talent, they are sent to training. Many Grisha eventually join the army. Army Grisha wear a uniform, the color of the main coat and the color of the trim of which makes it easy to determine which order the Grisha belongs to. Ravka relies on the Grisha for its security from enemies. The Second Army consists exclusively of Grisha and was briefly led by the Darkling, as well as the Sun Summoner Alina Starkova.

Although the Grisha fight in most of Ravka's wars and inflict the greatest damage on their enemies, they are considered witches and corrupt sorcerers and are viewed with suspicion and distrust by humans, including those serving in the First Army. Following the Sun Summoner's rebellion, a tentative alliance was formed between the First and Second Armies, which still despise each other. Both armies served under the official, if somewhat superficial, command of King Alexander III before Nikolai Lantsov inherited the throne of Ravka. Ravka also recruits Grisha from other lands, primarily Fjerda, Novyi Zem, and the Wandering Isle.

The Order is divided into two main types: Heartbreakers and Healers. In the second army, they wear red caftans.

Corpswich and tailors are also formally Corporalians, though only under the newest laws.

Following the events of the Shadow and Bone trilogy, the Corporalians are led and represented by Zhenya Safina in Grisha's triumvirate.

Advertisement Heartbeaters Main article: Heartrender Heartrenders are one of the most feared types of Grisha and were considered the most valuable soldiers in the Second Army under the Darkling's rule. Their abilities and training allow them to manipulate another person's body to cause harm; for example, a Heartrender can stop a person's heart or prevent air from entering their lungs.

Tailors were not officially considered Corporalians, despite their ability to alter a person's appearance, until Zhenya completed a mission for the Darkling and later became a member of the Grisha Triumvirate. Under the Triumvirate's leadership, all Corporalians began to learn the craft of tailoring, making the classification

tailors are practically obsolete, except for Zhenya.

Ravkan Corporals Corporalians are considered the most valuable soldiers in the Second Army, making them the highest rank of the Grisha orders under the Darkling. At the Little Palace, all Corporalians spend their first two years of training in general training before branching out to become either Heartrenders or Healers, depending on each individual's choice.

The Ethereals, or the Order of the Summoners (Etherealki), are Grisha whose power lies in the manipulation of various natural elements. This order is divided into the Squallers, Inferns, and Torrents.

Ethereals typically train in pairs; Inferns partner with other Inferns, while Squallers and Torrents typically train together.

In the Second Army, the Ethereals wear blue caftans (except for the Darkling).

The Substantials, or the Order of Fabricators (Materialki), are Grisha whose power is focused on combining materials such as metal, glass, textiles, and chemicals. This order is made up of Prochniks and Alchems.

Although looked down upon by both the Corporal and Ethereals during the Darkling's reign, the Substantials have created many innovations that are used for a variety of purposes in Ravka and internationally. Examples include Substantial cloth, an exceptionally strong and flexible fabric that can withstand bullets; Grisha steel; Substantial glass; blasting powders; lumia, a form of liquid fire; and a number of other inventions.

In the Second Army, the Substantials wear purple caftans. They are represented by David Kostik in the Grisha Triumvirate.
