A tearing sound. It's coming from behind me, just a few feet away. It's not a physical noise, but a dimensional screech. It's like the sound of old fabric ripping, but amplified a thousand times and with an electric quality that sends shivers down my spine.
I swivel my chair, the remote slipping from my hands. Behind me, on the worn carpet, space itself seems to be cracking. It's not a clean, circular portal like in the movies; it's an jagged fissure, a scar on reality, dark purple and corrosive gold. From within, an icy wind whips across my face, carrying with it an overwhelming smell: the metallic stench of fresh blood, the sulfur of burnt gunpowder, and the suffocating dampness of a stormy night. My heart hammers against my ribs. I'm petrified, unable to look away.
Leon slowly gets up, using the frame of my desk for support. Each movement seems to cost him an enormous amount of energy. He's holding a pistol—a modded Sentinel Nine—but the barrel is down, pointing at the floor. He rubs his face with his left hand, a gesture of pure frustration.
