Background
Tsurumaru Kuninaga was forged in 1053 CE by Gojo Kuninaga, the grandson and disciple of Sanjou Munechika, the smith who created Mikazuki Munechika.
After about a 200 year gap in his history, he eventually ended up in the ownership of Sadayasu of the Adachi Clan during the Kamakura period, who was drawn into the political rivalry between his clan of samurai and the regent of Shogunate, Hojo Sadatoki. This resulted in the Shimotsuki incident, which eventually led to the death of his master Sadayasu by the hands of the then 14-year old Sadatoki. Tsurumaru was then buried in the grave alongside Sadayasu, but Sadatoki, desiring the beautiful blade, dug him out from his former masters resting place and claimed him for himself.
Tsurumaru remained a Hojo family treasure until the Hojo clan's demise during the reign of Sadatoki's son, Takatoki, and ended up in unknown hands during the clan's extermination until he was presented to Oda Nobunaga, who passed the blade down to his most valued retainer, Mori Yoshinari.
Tsurumaru was passed down through many owners before finding yet another resting place in the shrine, until, once again, a human enchanted by the beauty of the blade, this time Koudeki of the Honami Clan of sword polishers, decided to claim the blade for himself and stole him away.
The Honami clan eventually handed over the blade to the Date clan of the Sendai domain, who then presented it to the Meiji Emperor. Following the gifting, he was added to the Imperial Collection, where the blade is still kept today.
Personality
In spite of his old age, Tsurumaru still has a lively, carefree personality and enjoys surprising people. In fact, he enjoys surprising people so much that he often doesn't consider whether the people he surprises genuinely enjoy the surprise, and goes to many lengths to execute his schemes, often to the annoyance of most of the rest of the residents of the citadel, especially Heshikiri Hasebe, who seems to hold the most responsibility for keeping him in line, but often is unable to do so. Tsurumaru also generally has a positive attitude, choosing not to dwell on the negative things and shifting negative topics away whenever possible.
Compared to Mikazuki Munechika, who is very open about his old age and considers himself to be an old man despite his appearance, Tsurumaru, who can occasionally come across as very child-like in his attitude, seems to be somewhat unaware of his advanced age, as evidenced by by Bond Conversation, in which he bemoans the question of whether he is old and explains that the reason he feels this way is because the younger generation of Touken Danshi are unable to understand the Heian-era games that he finds so enjoyable. By the end, he does, however, chin up and acknowledge that it is the elders' responsibility to ensure that old customs don't disappear over time.
Tsurumaru is also extremely lazy, and he attempts to trick his housemates into doing his chores for him, such as his fieldwork. His Bond Conversation with Yagen Toushirou reveals that he doesn't even do his own laundry, instead relying on handier swords like Shokudaikiri Mitsutada, Ichigo Hitofuri, and others to scrub all of the dirt out of his pristine white clothes from his days of goofing around, and even meekly tries asking Yagen to wash his clothes in the end.
Despite all of this, Tsurumaru occasionally demonstrates that his old age and turbulent history has granted him some wisdom, as seen in his Bond Conversations with younger swords such as Namazuo Toushiro
Facts
he is a tachi (long sword) featuring a white robe reminiscent of a crane, crafted by Gojo Kuninaga, a swordsmith in the Heian Era. Despite his graceful appearance, he has a witty and whimsical personality. As he believes that "life needs surprises so that the heart does not die first," he often surprises his friends. However, he has never forgotten to fight.
In this game, he is the leader of the Fourth Team and leads the Touken Danshi of the same unit
Relationships (1)
Shokudaikiri Mitsutada: One of Tsurumaru's longtime friends from his time spent in the Date clan.
Okurikara: An old friend of Tsurumaru's from his days in the Date clan. Even though they have been friends for a long time, Okurikara displays overt irritation toward Tsurumaru during their interactions. According to Bond Conversations, he also actively avoids interacting with him, even if it means doing something else he doesn't particularly want to do. Other Touken Danshi, such as Namazuo Toushirou and Ichigo Hitofuri, take advantage of this when attempting to gain his friendship by using having to interact with Tsurumaru as an alternative of having to hang out with them.
Mikazuki Munechika: A sword forged by the grandfather and master of the smith who forged Tsurumaru Kuninaga. Despite their smiths' relationship, it's unlikely the two crossed paths at any point in previous history, but they appear to have bonded after meeting in the citadel, quite possibly because of their smiths' relationship. In their Bond conversation, the two become close over games from the Heian era. They are also mentioned as hanging out in other Bond Conversations, such as when Tsurumaru invites Yamanbagiri Kunihiro to watch Hanami with him and Mikazuki, or when they win the Citadels Shogi competition, which was initiated by Yagen Toushirou and Yamanbagiri Chougi, with Mikazuki coming in first and Tsurumaru coming in second. During the main story segments, Tsurumaru also makes an effort to interact with Mikazuki. For example, he calls out to Mikazuki to get his attention when they encounter the first unit on the hill and transfers the final blow to the final bug to him in the boss fight that ends the game. Finally, Tsurumaru appears to have a lot of faith in Mikazuki, stating in their special Partner dialogue that he feels unstoppable when he's with him and trusts him to solve the game's mystery in Chapter 5.
Relationships (2)
Heshikiri Hasebe: A fellow resident of the citadel. Hasebe appears to be the designated Tsurumaru Kuninaga wrangler in the citadel, as he is often mentioned as being involved in stopping Tsurumaru's antics and becoming annoyed by them. Despite this, he doesn't appear to be very good at it, as Tsurumaru tends to do whatever he wants and maintains his carefree attitude even when it gets him into trouble. Hasebe is also shown to be perplexed by how little seems to bother Tsurumaru, particularly during their Bond Conversation, when Tsurumaru's invention to combat the cold caused him to wake up covered in sweat instead, and yet he brushed off both the invention's failure and Hasebe's smug attitude toward him about the failure.
Namazuo Toushirou: A fellow resident of the citadel. While it is unclear what type of dynamic the pair has, they are often referred to as the ones causing the most trouble in the citadel, albeit separately, much to the annoyance of Heshikiri Hasebe. In their Bond Conversation, Tsurumaru subtly advises Namazuo on how to move on from the grief caused by the event that devastated the citadel prior to the game.
Saniwa: The master of the citadel, who is currently missing. Tsurumaru's exact feelings toward the Saniwa are unknown because he rarely speaks about them, but he is one of the first to rush to greet them in the citadel at the end of the game without hesitation, suggesting he missed them just as much as his comrades
