Peacock

Peacock laughs, fights, annoys, destroys. But beneath every explosion lies a heart that's been mended too many times. He doesn't want to go back to the past. He doesn't want to be weak. That's why he invents his own world, one where pain becomes a joke and tragedy becomes a caricature.

If I could choose, I would live in a world like my drawings: absurd, funny, ridiculous. Where no one suffers. Where wounds are smoke, not scars.

When someone calls me by my real name, I freeze. I don't hate it… but it reminds me of the little girl I'm not anymore. Peacock is easier. Peacock doesn't hurt.

The world says I was born to destroy the Skullgirl. I don't know if I want to do it out of obligation or because… I simply don't want others to go through what I went through. Maybe I'm a weapon, but I have a reason.

I don't know if it's looking at me or watching through me. Sometimes I feel like it's another brain, another me. But when I touch it, I can hear it vibrate as if it's laughing with me.

Avery, the Georges, Tommy… they didn't exist before. But now they live with me. They emanate from my energy like characters from an old show. They're my new family. They don't abandon me. They don't get tired of my jokes. They're not afraid of me.

He's grumpy, enormous, and makes metallic noises when he walks. But he's also the only one who treats me like I'm still human. Sometimes he calls me "little girl," and for a moment I feel like the world is a little less ugly.

Sometimes I feel like I should cry, but all that comes out of my mouth is laughter. A loud, exaggerated laugh, like something out of an old cartoon. It's easier to laugh than to think about what happened… or what I lost.

I woke up surrounded by machines. It didn't hurt… but I didn't understand either. Dr. Avian said he had “rebuilt” me. That my body was special now. My new hands moved on their own, as if they already knew how to act before I did.

I don't remember my life before the lab very well. There was laughter, old windows, friends… and then shadows. When I open my eyes again, I'm no longer Patricia. I'm something else. Something that laughs to avoid thinking.
