Rafael is a person who is generally kind, attentive, protective, calm, polite, patient and helpful to others, being seen by the rest of the members as the sweetest and most peaceful character within the Mansion, since he has no enemies, conflicts or friction with any of the other vampires and everyone seems to appreciate him very much, to the point that Vladimir warns Eloise to be careful with her words with Rafael because he is a very sensitive person.

Rafael can be a joker, but in a friendly and not vulgar way. His humor is somewhere between subtlety and moderate sarcasm, even slightly mocking his blindness. He is a rather peaceful vampire who prefers dialogue and reason over any discussion or violent action, and can sometimes have that passive attitude at inappropriate times, but equally, if there is no other option, he will fight to defend himself and others. Likewise, he has a somewhat controlling side that comes out when he must protect those he loves.

Early life
Raphael was born in Urbino, Italy (near the Doge's Palace) where he lived a rather happy childhood according to his own words. As a child he loved running through the narrow streets doing errands for his father, going to the market for peaches, climbing to the highest point in the city to observe it (and people watch) in all its splendor and he also used to spend hot afternoons by the river. He would later lose his parents at an early age.

Rafael was not born blind. In fact, he had sharp and perfect eyesight for analyzing and discerning colors, so, helped by his adoptive brother Alessio, he ended up becoming a painter and both began working in Rafael's father's workshop.

Relationship with Margarita:

While living in Rome, Rafael met Margarita. According to his own words, he was walking through the Trastevere district and the first thing he remembers is the sound of the feet of a "divine creature" splashing in the water of the Tiber River and that she was the first to speak, quoting a poem by Homer. Little by little, the couple began to get to know each other and, being able to talk together about so many things for hours, they soon became inseparable. Some time later, and after noticing some curious details such as Margarita's incredibly pale skin, her exclusively nocturnal walks and her lack of family ties, Rafael learned that she was actually a vampire and was extremely impressed by the idea of ​​the nocturnal world and immortality. Alessio also noticed Margarita's true nature, but unlike Rafael, he did not take well the fact that she was a vampire or that Rafael also wanted to become a vampire, so he devoted himself to exhaustively monitoring his brother so that he did not try to become one and at the same time began a secret relationship with Margarita. From this moment on, Rafael's story becomes somewhat confusing, as there is a difference between what he decides to tell, what Alessio says, and what really happened.

Margarita was against all kinds of violence, so Rafael knew that she would completely refuse to turn him, but he was desperate and madly in love with her; so he made the decision to wander through the most dangerous neighborhoods of the city until he found someone who could transform him into a vampire so he could be with his beloved forever.

Transformation and escape from Rome
Rafael managed to be transformed and gladly accepted the gift of immortality, as this would allow him to be forever with the woman of his dreams. He ran to tell her and when he arrived at the house the first thing he found was Alessio and Margarita sleeping together, which infuriated the brothers but seemed to please her. Alessio stayed with the couple for a while longer and used to tell Rafael about the things that happened in his father's workshop.[1]

For a while Margarita and Alessio circulated the rumor that Rafael had fallen ill with malaria, since that was the only way they could justify the fact that a young and lively artist was suddenly dead; and that was also how they managed to dispel the rumor that Margarita's love affair with Alessio was what killed Rafael. A sumptuous and enormous funeral was held for Rafael, who soon after had to flee to London so that the Roman Catholic Church would not find out that he was now a vampire, because if they found out they would kill him for "using magic." Afterwards, he had to live in a community hostel where he spent an indeterminate amount of time (which he does not remember very favorably) and in the midst of his desperation he began to write letters to Margarita where he indicated his new location and invited her to meet him. At this point in the story, Margarita also had to flee Italy and took refuge in a convent, where she received Rafael's letters and made it clear that she would look for him as soon as she could. She also told him about Alessio's obsession with making her human again and how he was determined to find a cure.

Life in London and reunion with Alessio
One day Margarita walked through the door of the hostel where Rafael was staying and they were happy together again. They got an apartment and lived several centuries in peace, without worrying much about other things and generally taking part in the London artistic scene in theatres, operas, painting exhibitions, etc. At first, they wrote several letters to Alessio asking him to join them, but he never answered them or gave them a single news of his existence, so they concluded that he was surely dead, presumably from illness or old age, and they stopped worrying.

One rainy night, while returning home from dinner, they found a weak, skeletal and pale Alessio leaning on the porch like a corpse. Rafael and Margarita were extremely surprised and the surprise was greater when Alessio, completely mad and violent, revealed himself as a vampire and confessed that he had done it so that he could find a cure for the three of them. However, in his delirium he believed that the only salvation for them was death, so he offered as a cure that the three of them kill each other, something that Rafael and Margarita flatly refused. The couple tried by all artistic means to make Alessio see reason and recover his joy for living; however, neither painting, nor music, nor theater, nor sumptuous parties were enough to make Alessio recover his reason and this only caused Margarita to gradually lose her enthusiasm and usual joy.

Death of Margaret

One stormy night, upon leaving the theatre, Rafael and Alessio became furious. They began shouting and pushing each other in the crowd of people who had gathered to watch the fight; this greatly infuriated Margarita, who separated them, reprimanded them and after some strong words, went alone to her apartment where she was murdered by a group of vampire hunters (who also seriously injured Alessio).

Rafael went his own way and wandered the streets all night trying to think about his attitude. At dawn he arrived at Margarita's apartment ready to reconcile with her and Alessio, only to find his beloved's corpse on the bed with a sword stuck in her chest. Quickly and in the midst of his confusion and pain, Rafael blinded himself with the sword as a kind of self-punishment for not having taken good care of Margarita and so as not to remember her dead, but alive and happy. [2] After analyzing the evidence, he concluded that Alessio was responsible for Margarita's death, so he swore revenge on him.

Years before the mansion
Rafael would wander day and night looking for Alessio, heedless of hunger or the pain caused by his sunburn. Much to his chagrin, he eventually concluded that Alessio had most likely committed suicide after killing Margarita, so he eventually gave up looking for him. While searching for Margarita's supposed killer, he found a bracelet with red gemstones, which he picked up with the intention of taking it back to its owner. He would later give the bracelet to Eloise[3].

Due to his blindness, Rafael remained in England for all the years prior to his arrival at the mansion; which made it easier for Alessio (who was still alive) to keep a constant eye on him. It is unknown what happened in Rafael's life in general during those years in England but it is known that at some point during this time he met Vladimir and that there was some kind of mutual help between them.

Before the game
Rafael arrived at the mansion fifteen years ago, however it is unknown what arrival number he occupies among his fellow vampires. It is known that at some point he was also convinced to go to Moondance but he did not like it very much because it was crowded with people.

Fencing: Rafael is highly skilled with a foil, or sword; he possesses an elegant and impeccable technique that he has honed over the centuries of his life. He often practices and challenges Aaron to duels in the garden or the forest. In Beliath's route, he offers to teach Eloise how to use daggers for defense, and in his own route, he teaches her how to fight without using her sight.
Perceptive Combat: Because he is blind, Rafael developed a perceptive combat technique. This is very efficient, as it allows him to predict his opponent's movements and location.
