Bokuto has round, golden eyes and spiky, greyish-white hair with black streaks; some sections of it are styled to vaguely resemble an animal's, strongly amplifying his uncanny resemblance to a great horned owl. He has a solid, muscular build.

He has a playful, friendly, bombastic, and childlike personality and is described by his team as someone who has "mood swings". Because of this, he is sometimes described as "simple-minded". His personality is very compatible and gets along with many people similar to Hinata . Bokuto can sometimes be oblivious to other people's awkwardness, as seen in his interactions with Tsukishima . He also displays kind and fair traits, leaning towards being defensive during the 3-on-3 match during summer training camp where Bokuto told Kuroo, Tsukishima, and Lev to team up against Hinata when he was trying to score. Bokuto often makes jokes about everything and acts quite dramatically about his plays, wanting attention or affirmation from his teammates.

Despite his overall goofball demeanor, there are times when Bokuto exhibits something resembling a wise form of intelligence, his words inspiring Tsukishima in Karasuno's game against Shiratorizawa and helping to keep Yachi from worrying too much during the match against Nekoma. He has also been shown to have become a mentor figure to Hinata and has given the younger teen numerous pieces of advice and shown him new tricks.

As the ace of a powerful school, Bokuto takes pride in his position and is both admired and feared by his own team and opponents alike for his impressive skill and morale-boosting attitude. However, Bokuto is well known for suffering from mood swings that can affect his performance during games and can sometimes take a while or need something grandiose to get back into top form. When he comes back from a slump, he clearly displays his pride as the ace and believes that he is the "strongest". Bokuto eventually realizes that his weakness is not a trait that an ace should have and was able to get rid of this flaw which would lead him to start referring to himself as an ace.
