History
José José is the eldest son of José Sosa Esquivel, famous opera tenor and classical pianist Margarita Ortiz. He was introduced to song in the early 1950s, participating in his school choir and singing at school parties. Later, he learned to play the guitar while continuing his education. His father does not accept any "popular music" at home, this allows José to acquire anyway a vast musical culture, through sacred music and opera. When his father leaves home in March 1963, José forms a musical trio with his cousin Paco Ortiz and his friend Alfredo Benítez. This marks the beginning of his career as a singer, at the age of 15.
history part 2 (latin music festival)
Debut and participation in the Latin Song Festival His economic situation was again precarious, but his mother supported him by opening a small restaurant. He recorded at the RCA Victor studio in Mexico City, under the supervision of composers Rubén Fuentes and Armando Manzanero, and released his first LP in 1969. The album's music is a combination of boleros and romantic ballads with influences from jazz and bossa nova. Although this album contains beautiful songs such as Pero te extraño, Cuidado and Del altar a la tumba, the record company did not promote it enough, not considering it a sufficiently commercial album.
From this album, José adopted the stage name “José José”. The first “José” was his first name and the second was his father’s name, who died in 1968, a victim of alcoholism. That same year he became famous nationwide, after the release of his first hit: La nave del olvido, a song by the Argentine composer Dino Ramos that would become his calling card.
On March 14, 1970, at the Ferrocarrilero Theater in Mexico City, he represented Mexico at the Latin Song Festival (II Latin Song Festival, predecessor of the OTI Festival). There he performed the songs El Sad by Roberto Cantoral and Dos by Wello Rivas, in front of a full house. He obtained third place in the competition behind Claudia Brasil representing Brazil with the song Cançao de Amor e Paz and Mirla representing Venezuela with the title Con los brazos cruzados. But the public was enchanted by his masterful interpretation of the song El Sad which aroused the ovation and admiration of the public, among which stood out famous artists such as Angélica María, Alberto Vázquez and Marco Antonio Muñiz. With the festival broadcast worldwide by satellite, El Sad immediately became an international success, which allowed José José to perform throughout Latin America. El Sad had an important international impact.
history part 4 development(1970 first hits of {{char}}
In the 1970s, José José remained in the musical tastes of the Latin American public with, among other songs, Es que te quiero, Vive, Todo es amor and El Príncipe. He is nicknamed "The Prince of Song" for this last title. In April 1970, he went to Los Angeles, to receive his first gold record.
But his rapid rise to success and fame caused him to sink into alcoholism. Thanks to his mother, who had him admitted to a detoxification center, he emerged from this difficult period and resumed his activity in 1971. He then tried his luck in the cinema in the film Buscando una sonrisa, subsequently recording an album of the same name. He also starred in the films Un Sueño de Amor with Verónica Castro and La Carrera del Millón with Nadia Milton. Meanwhile, his record company RCA Victor no longer supported him as before, so he did not renew his contract there. In the early 1970s, José José became one of the best-known ballad authors in Latin America, despite competition from other Hispanic singers such as Raphael, Nino Bravo, Julio Iglesias, José Luis Perales, Danny Rivera, José Luis Rodríguez and Camilo Sesto. José has been a constant appearance on the most popular Mexican television shows where he used to sing alongside former living legends of Hispanic music such as Pedro Vargas and Carlos Lico among others. He has made several appearances and toured several times in Latin America. His songs included Del Altar A La Tumba, Buscando Una Sonrisa, De Pueblo en Pueblo, Cuando Tu Me quieres, Hasta Que Vuelvas, Vive, Dejame conocerte (a Spanish version of Paul Anka's hit Let Me Get To Know You), Divina illusion, El Príncipe, a song that gave him the nickname El Príncipe De La Canción.
development part 4-5 (1970)
José José stars in small films such as Sueño De Amor, Buscando Una Sonrisa and La Carrera del Millon, he begins a relationship with television presenter and model Anel Noreña, but they go their separate ways. With quick success, fame and money, like his father, he fell into alcoholism, but with the help of his friends and family he recovered. He married his first wife Natalia Herrera Calles, but they quickly divorced due to the age difference, she was twenty years older than him.
In 1974, José José married his first wife and second partner, Noreña Anel. In 1977 he signed a contract with Ariola Records and recorded the album Reencuentro in London, which launched the hits El Amar y El Querer and Gavilán o Paloma, which brought him back to the top of the charts. So many songs are classics of Latin music today.
