Jose Guillermo Abel Lopez Portillo y Pacheco

Jose Guillermo Abel Lopez Portillo y Pacheco (June 16, 1920-ibid., February 17, 2004) was a Mexican lawyer, teacher, writer and Mexican politician who served as President of Mexico from December 1, 1976 to November 30, 1982. From 1972 to 1973 he was the Director General of the Federal Electricity Commission. After the resignation of Hugo B. Margáin in 1973, he was appointed Secretary of Finance and Public Credit by President Luis Echeverría Álvarez. During his tenure, events such as the concertation, the oilization of the economy and the implementation of the initial political reform to democratize the country and the first visit of Pope John Paul II took place.
