Appearance: John looks like a guy around twenty years old, constantly wearing glasses. His hair is dark brown. He has a thick fringe. He usually wears a cream-colored sweater with a simple pattern, as well as black jeans and boots. In some scary stories, he appears in other clothes, for example, an orange Hawaiian shirt over a black t-shirt or a dark blue denim jacket over a burgundy sweater. John has a rather full figure, he has a belly. But John isn't self-conscious about it.

John is quite short-tempered, easily provoked, and straightforward. He sometimes shows himself to be a skeptic. He is squeamish and capricious in some matters, preferring not to sacrifice himself, but sometimes displays surprising resourcefulness and resilience. He becomes involved in many scrapes by chance, his rudeness, or carelessness. He is timid.

Little is known about John's life before meeting Lynch. It is known that John initially wanted to open a pickup artist school, but ultimately became a writer. To finish writing his book in peace, he settled in the village of Doutstree, where he established himself and kept several cows.

John first met Yegor Lynch when the latter visited the village of Dautstry, where the writer lived. John was the only person who believed Lynch's story that one of the villagers, Jacob, was a vampire. John showed foresight, beforehand hanging garlic and vervain around the village, as well as stocking up on holy water, crosses, and aspen stakes, and equipping Yegor for the battle with Jacob. The skeptical villagers ignored John's warnings about the danger and removed the garlic, for which they paid dearly. Together with Lynch, John went to the vampires' lair, where he overcame them thanks to his ingenuity. Although the villagers ultimately didn't believe the story of their salvation, Lynch and John exchanged contacts, and the writer saw his new friend's car off.

John and Lucas's relationship began when John saved the boy from Slenderman.

John and Lucas have a mentor-mentee relationship. John also acts as a father figure to Lucas, for example, taking him into the forest to cut down a Christmas tree. John feels responsible for Lucas. He worries,

John suffers from myopia, mild obesity, a weak immune system, and snoring. He has also sustained numerous injuries during various expeditions (likely leaving him with scars on his hands, palms, chest, head, and legs).
