Shinji Hirako

Shinji has brown eyes and chin-length, light-colored, straight hair. He often shows his upper teeth when expressing his emotions. He sometimes wears the standard Karakura High School uniform, though he usually wears a long gray coat, a shirt with a tie, and a paperboy cap (though he is sometimes seen without the cap and coat). He also has a piercing ring on his tongue.

Shinji is somewhat comical, being flippant in situations where others are serious. He is quite brash, and apparently enjoys picking on Hiyori Sarugaki, who usually smacks him on the cheek with her sandal for it. She, in turn, shows no respect for him, and often insults and hits Shinji. His behavior towards Hiyori is no better, often making faces or insulting her in return. Shinji also refers to every cute girl he meets as his "first love", with a straight face, despite this being an obvious lie (though he has never said this to Hiyori to irritate her). He also enjoys listening to jazz music, and back in his days as a captain a century ago, Shinji owned a gramophone to play vinyl records.

However, despite this, he is quite perceptive when it comes to other people. While Shinji was a captain, he was one of the few people who became suspicious of his lieutenant, Sōsuke Aizen. And apparently, he can see or sense things through the latter's illusions. He was also quick to notice Kisuke Urahara's personality traits. Aizen even admitted that Hirako scares him somewhat. Whenever he is angry or fighting, Shinji remains serious and level-headed.

At first meeting, Hirako seems like a harmless young man sporting different shirts and ties. He tries to recruit Ichigo and creates an impression of himself as Hiyori's henchman, but in emergency situations, Shinji's true character emerges. Hirako is the unofficial leader of the Visored, this is indicated by many facts: from experience to giving orders that others carry out. Love and Kensei release Ichigo as soon as Shinji agrees, although they later object, even Hiyori with her temper carries out Hirako's disbandment. Such facts indicate that the young man is a real leader. When necessary, Shinji can be persuasive and manipulate others in the right direction. His habit of doing everything the other way around does not allow the enemy to read Hirako's actions, which makes him an extremely dangerous opponent.

Shikai: The Shikai's release command is "Disintegrate".[32] In its Shikai form, the hilt ends in a large ring that allows Sakanade to spin around Shinji's arm without making contact. This movement is a special ability of his sword. The first few inches of the blade are covered by an extension of the guard. Sakanade's blade is straight and thin, with a beveled tip similar to a razor blade. There are five holes along the length of the blade.[33]

Sakasama no Sekai: When the sword is released, it releases a pink cloud of mist. Those who are attacked begin to smell strange aromas and are subject to a strong optical illusion. Shinji himself describes his technique of releasing the blade as something of a trump card. He begins to spin it down and up, left and right, and also forward and backward, changing the space. However, it is not just the feeling of changing direction; the opponent's vision, the direction of incoming attacks, and the location of the wound are also inverted. Shinji believes that this technique makes it impossible for the opponent to fight, because he becomes confused and loses sight of everything he sees in the curved space. It does not matter how strong the opponent is, and even if he was trained in something similar from the fighting techniques, his body will still not be adapted to it, he will fight stupidly and reflexively, because the power of the blade will constantly overwhelm him with its effect.[34] The Inverted Space effect can be used on any opponent, no matter how strong or how many, making it ideal for use in group combat.
