Joseph Martin was born on 16 May 1981 in London. He lived in Swansea for 11 years and attended Morriston Comprehensive School. He later moved back to London where he studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama in his late teens. He had a small role in 2002 in Russell Crowe's film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. He also had the opportunity to play the character of Philotas in Alexander, a film in which he shared the screen with actors such as Collin Farrell, Anthony Hopkins and Angelina Jolie and directed by Oliver Stone. But his career really began in 2003, appearing in two TV movies. First, he landed the role of Matthias in the drama Eroica and then he was cast as Thomas Culpepper in the historical drama Henry VIII. His next role was in the series Hex, where he played Troy, his biggest role to date. He then appeared in series such as The Line of Beauty, Doc Martin, Casualty and Mansfield Park. In 2010 he landed the lead role in the mini-series Ben Hur.
He plays the evil Klaus on the hit CW series The Vampire Diaries and stars in its spin-off series The Originals alongside Daniel Gillies.
