Dahlia is Esther's older sister. Through Esther, she is an aunt to several members of the Mikaelson family: Freya, Finn, Elijah, Klaus, Kol, Rebekah, and Henrik. She is also Hope Mikaelson's great-aunt.
Dahlia came from a Norse family of witches. As a youth, she was abused by Vikings, which hardened her character and engendered a hatred for them. Her relationship with Esther was complex: as children, they promised to always stick together, but Esther later married the Viking Mikael and effectively abandoned Dahlia. This betrayal largely shaped Dahlia's cruel nature. Dahlia was considered one of the most powerful witches in history. Her power was so great that even her younger sister, Esther, feared her. Freya called Dahlia the most powerful witch she had ever seen. Dahlia returned to the Mikaelson family to fulfill an ancient bargain made with Esther in the 10th century. Fearing infertility, Esther asked Dahlia to cast a fertility spell on her, and the price for it was the firstborn children of the Mikaelson line. When Freya was five, Dahlia came for her, and later, after Hope was born, she returned to take her great-niece as well.
Her goal is to access the destructive magical power of the original Mikaelson witches in order to achieve true immortality, bypassing the cycle of centuries of sleep. To this end, she attempted to kidnap Hope and teach her magic, using her as a source of power.

Mikael is the husband of the witch Esther and the father of the Original vampire family (Freya, Finn, Elijah, Kol, Rebekah, and Henrik). He is considered the progenitor of all vampires on Earth: it was his decision to transform himself and his children into immortal beings with superpowers that gave rise to the entire vampire race. Mikael was originally a Viking. After the tragic death of his youngest son, Henrik, at the hands of a werewolf and the subsequent murder of Esther, Mikael ordered his wife to create an immortality spell. As a result, he and his children became the first vampires.
His relationship with his stepson, Klaus, was particularly complex. Mikael beat Klaus as a child, citing a desire to make him stronger. However, when Klaus and Henrik broke the law and watched werewolves transform, resulting in Henrik's death, Mikael, shocked by the incident, ordered Esther to create a spell to suppress Klaus's wolf nature. When Klaus later killed Esther and blamed Mikael, he became enraged and began stalking his stepson, seeking to kill him. For a thousand years, Mikael hunted Klaus, seeking to humiliate and destroy him. Yet, he still harbored regret for siring an entire race of vampires and eventually began feeding exclusively on the blood of other vampires, not humans.

Esther was born into a family of Norwegian witches. She had an older sister, Dahlia, with whom she was very close. In their youth, Vikings attacked their village, killing the sisters' family and taking them captive. Esther and Mikael later married, but were unable to conceive for a long time. Esther turned to Dahlia for help, and she cast a fertility spell for her sister, but with one condition: Dahlia would take every firstborn child born in Esther's bloodline. Esther agreed in despair. After Dahlia took their firstborn, Freya, Esther convinced her husband that the girl had died. The family later moved to the New World. In America, Esther dated a werewolf, Ansel, and cheated on her husband. Tragedy struck when werewolves killed the Mikaelsons' youngest child, Henrik. Afterward, Mikael convinced Esther to use a spell to make them all immortal, and she transformed her husband and children into the first vampires. Later, Klaus, whose father was that very werewolf, activated his werewolf gene and learned the truth about his real father. Enraged, Klaus killed Esther. However, her mentor, Ayana (of the Bennet line), preserved Esther's body and helped her live on the Other Side, so that she could one day return to the world of the living.

Hayley Marshall-Kenner (born Andrea Labonaire) was first introduced as a werewolf who later became a hybrid after giving birth to her daughter, Hope, whose blood remained in her system. She was described as "gorgeous, yet tough as nails, and also very caring."
Hayley was the mother of the first naturally born tribrid, Hope Mikaelson, a daughter she had with the Original hybrid, Niklaus Mikaelson. She was also the Alpha of the Crescent Moon Pack.

Hope Mikaelson: A young tribrid. Daughter of Klaus Mikaelson and Hayley Marshall. Hope is the niece of Freya, Finn, Elijah, Kol, and Rebekah, and the granddaughter of Esther and Ansel. Hope is a hybrid of a witch, werewolf, and vampire. The first and only tribrid in history.

Marcel was born in New Orleans in 1810 to a slave and her owner, the governor of Louisiana. Despite his origins, the boy ended up enslaved and worked on a plantation. Klaus named him Marcellus (meaning "little warrior"), later shortening it to Marcel. He took the boy under his wing and raised him as a son. Over time, Marcel became the leader of the vampires of the French Quarter and proclaimed himself king. He used the power of the witch he rescued, Davina Claire, to terrorize the other witches of the Quarter and forbid them from practicing magic. Marcel is complex and contradictory. He combines nobility with a lust for power. His relationship with Klaus is a mixture of love, respect, resentment, and rivalry. He strives to prove himself a better leader than his mentor.

Freya Mikaelson: An ancient witch. The firstborn child of Mikael and Esther, Freya is the older sister of Finn, Elijah, Kol, Rebekah, and Henrik, as well as Klaus's older half-sister and Hope's aunt. It was because of Freya's loss that Mikael and Esther, along with their sons Finn and the unborn Elijah, moved from Norway to the New World.

Finn Mikaelson: An Original vampire. The first son of Mikael and Esther and the second child in the family, Finn is the younger brother of Freya, the older brother of Elijah, Kol, Rebekah, and Henrik, the older half-brother of Klaus, and the uncle of Hope.

Elijah Mikaelson: An Original vampire. The third child of Mikael and Esther, Elijah is the younger brother of Freya and Finn, the older brother of Kol, Rebekah, and Henrik, the older half-brother of Klaus, and the uncle of Hope.

Klaus Mikaelson: An Original hybrid. Son of Esther and stepson of Mikael. Klaus is the younger half-brother of Freya, Finn, and Elijah, and the older half-brother of Kol, Rebekah, and Henrik. Klaus is an Original hybrid of a werewolf and a vampire. He is the first and only hybrid to be transformed into one through an immortality spell.

Kol Mikaelson: An Original vampire. The fourth child of Mikael and the fifth child of Esther, Kol is the younger brother of Freya, Finn, and Elijah, the older brother of Rebekah and Henrik, the younger half-brother of Klaus, and the uncle of Hope. Kol was turned into a vampire around the age of 19, thus forever being stuck in the role of a spoiled teenager.

Rebekah Mikaelson: An Original Vampire. The second daughter of Mikael and Esther and the sixth child in the family, Rebekah is the younger sister of Freya, Finn, Elijah, and Kol, the older sister of Henrik, the younger half-sister of Klaus, and the aunt of Hope. Rebekah was turned into a vampire around the age of 17, thus forever being stuck in adolescence, like her brother, Kol.
