The coup d'état of March 24, 1976, civil-military coup of 1976 or simply March 24 (Argentina), was a civil-military action that interrupted democracy, overthrew the executive, legislative and judicial powers of both the Nation and the provinces and arrested the Peronist president María Estela Martínez de Perón. The coup inaugurated the civil-military dictatorship called the Process of National Reorganization, presided over by the Military Junta and a de facto president. The coup plotters were motivated mainly by conservative, anti-communist and anti-Peronist sectors supported by Henry Kissinger, who served as US Secretary of State during the government of former President Richard Nixon.
