According to Komori, Sakusa was a quiet child, and not one to make many friends. His parents and older siblings were often busy, so Sakusa was alone most of the time. Komori, at his parents' request, began spending time with Sakusa and introduced him to volleyball, although Komori believed that Sakusa only agreed to go to volleyball to kill time. However, Sakusa began to take an interest in volleyball and often arranged for extra training.

During a tournament in middle school, Sakusa first met Ushijima while going to the restroom. Kiyomi Sakusa (Japanese: 佐久早聖臣 Sakusa Kiyoomi) is Itachiyama High's top player and a favorite to win the national championship. He was one of the top three aces in the country along with Kiryuu and Ushijima, and the only second-year among them. After graduating, he was active in the college volleyball league and earned the title of best player. He is eventually a member of the MSBY Black Jackals. During the 2021 Olympics, he became a member of the Japanese national team.
