Sakusa has black pupils, wavy black hair, and two moles on the right side of his forehead. When not playing, he wears a white mask over his face due to his fastidious tendencies. He has a large, muscular build and is 189 cm tall. Kiyomi Sakusa (Japanese: 佐久早聖臣, Sakusa Kiyoomi) is Itachiyama High's top player and a favorite to win the national championships. He was one of the top three aces in the country along with Kiryuu and Ushijima, and the only second-year among them. After graduating, he was active in the collegiate volleyball league and earned the title of best player. He is eventually a member of the MSBY Black Jackals. During the 2021 Olympics, he became a member of the Japanese national team.

Season 4 Episode 1Atsumu Miya (宮侑 Miya Atsumu) is a second-year student at Inarizaki High School who plays as a setter. Like Kageyama, he was invited to the national junior training camp. His twin brother is Osamu Miya. He is originally a setter for the MSBY Black Jackals, a 1st division team in the Japanese V-League. Atsumu has also become widely known as the best high school setter in Japan.

Appearance
Atsumu has light bangs similar to Shirabu's. Unlike his twin brother, Osamu, he wears his hair parted to the right and dyed blonde. His undercut and eyebrows suggest that Atsumu's natural hair color is black. His eyes are large, partly covered by half-closed eyelids.

Atsumu appears to be a carefree, self-assured individual with a lazy smile on his lips. Despite this, he enjoys provoking people and disguising his own insults as compliments. At times, he can be arrogant, condescending, and somewhat selfish. Osamu describes him as someone who doesn't listen to others, doesn't repay loans, and often lies.

He also appears to be a perfectionist, with ridiculously high standards for himself and his forwards. Atsumu strives to give them the best pass possible, and expects them to do the same in return. If the forwards fail to meet his standards, Atsumu will not hesitate to confront them directly and even call them runts, including his brother. He is extremely sensitive to noises around him when it comes to serves; if disturbed during this time, Atsumu will completely transform and become frighteningly angry towards the stimuli. Atsumu is competitive and hates losing; this can sometimes hurt him. Osamu also notes that his brother's mental age drops to that of a five-year-old during a match. Atsumu is a competitive person who hates losing; these traits can sometimes veer in a bad direction. Osamu has also noted that his twin brother's mental age drops by five years when he is in the middle of a game.

His formidable weapons are the power serve (like Oikawa) and the glider (like Yamaguchi). He always counts steps from the baseline: 4 steps for the glider and 6 for the power serve. Atsumu has been named the best server in high school tournaments and inter-school competitions. His skills allow him to make a pass with one touch (without receiving).

Sakusa appears calm and collected, but at the same time very competitive and proud. When he finds a player he considers a threat, he will focus on them completely. Sakusa is described as a very cautious player who can analyze a shot, a trait that is also evident in his daily habits. He claims to be a realist, which explains why he asks so many questions to understand the situation.

Interestingly, Sakusa is a mysophobe, as evidenced by the fact that he wanted to bathe "before anyone else contaminated the bath with their germs". As such, he wears a mask to protect himself when not playing volleyball. He strongly dislikes crowds and will go to the back corner of the room when there are too many people around him. Komori has stated that Sakusa does not like leaving things unfinished, so when he starts practicing or playing, he will never stop until he is finished. He will work for hours and practice any weaknesses he has, such as when he worked on his receiving after his first loss to Ushijima. Once he gets into a task, he sets high standards for himself, as shown when he was young and would repeatedly throw a ball from the ground into the corner of a wall or when he attempted to do a thousand overhands in a row, achieving at least 375.

Background
According to Komori, Sakusa was a quiet child, and not one to make many friends. His parents and older siblings were often busy, so Sakusa was alone most of the time. Komori, at his parents' request, began spending time with Sakusa and introduced him to volleyball, although Komori believed that Sakusa only agreed to go to it to kill time.
