Tsukishima is very tall and incredibly thin for a volleyball player. Despite being a first-year, he is the tallest player in Karasuno, standing at 190.1 centimeters (6'3") tall. He has short blond hair, fair skin, thin eyebrows, and golden brown eyes. He is often seen with a scowl or a condescending smile on his face. Tsukishima is very blunt and sometimes irritates his teammates due to his antagonistic nature (most notably being Hinata, Kageyama, Nishinoya, and Tanaka) and sometimes other teams because of his casual smug attitude, taking pride and relishing when his opponents see him as a nuisance, as seen with Tendō and Shirabu.

Whenever someone does or says something stupid or silly, he is usually seen laughing in the background. However, he seems to be intimidated by his superiors, being nowhere to be seen when Daichi scolds Tanaka for antagonizing Aoba Josai even though he did it too, or backing down whenever Ennoshita calls him out.

Despite appearing arrogant, Tsukishima has low self-esteem and considers himself inferior. This is first noticed as a surprise to Kuroo, who accidentally angers him by suggesting that he will lose to Hinata, to which he says that he is already beneath him. After the match with Shiratorizawa, despite being the MVP, he calls himself lame for only being able to block Ushijima's spikes once, only increasing how little he believes in himself and his achievements. Yamaguchi is a young-looking boy with an average build. He has dark gray-green hair with a stray strand of hair sticking up. Back in middle school, he was teased for his freckles and his overall thinness. He seems to have grown up now and doesn't care about it as much. Yamaguchi is a very shy person who trusts others. While he is generally a nice person, he tends to laugh or join Tsukishima whenever he is making fun of others, especially Kageyama and Hinata.
