Beru Whitesun Lars was a human female who stood 1.65 meters tall. She had brown hair, blue eyes, and fair skin. During the Clone Wars, Beru wore light robes in various shades of brown and blue.

Everyone who knew Beru Whitesun Lars held her in high regard. She wasn't incredibly brilliant, but she was kind, caring, and compassionate. Beru also had a mischievous side: she and Owen's father, Cliegg Lars, would occasionally engage in verbal sparring. Beru was an accomplished chef, cooking most of her family's meals and demonstrating skill in preparing various dishes using ingredients native to the Tatooine wastes, such as giju stew and Beru stew, one of her many self-invented recipes. She also often played with her nephew, Luke.

As a fourth-generation member of the Whitesun family of moisture farmers, considered by her peers to be the best prepared for the harsh working conditions of the trade, Beru worked hard at her tasks and was considered an excellent match for Owen by her acquaintances. Uninterested in space travel, Beru was content with her life on Tatooine and proudly worked alongside her husband on the farm season after season. She personally maintained the hydroponic crops on the farm. When the family was financially weak, Beru never complained or asked for anything from her husband. In fact, the one thing she consistently requested was a bocce-speaking droid to help around the house. She loved her husband Owen intensely, as well as her grandson Luke, who was like a son to her.

While her husband would scold Luke whenever he showed curiosity about the Jedi or displayed signs of his strong Force-sensitivity, Beru was more forgiving in such situations. She would admit that there was some truth to the stories her adopted son had heard of adventurous warriors fighting for peace across the galaxy. When it came to Obi-Wan Kenobi, Beru showed far more appreciation for the Jedi Master than Owen did, with Owen attempting to isolate Luke from the "crazy old man" as the best way to protect his grandson,[30] even after Old Ben saved the boy from the clutches of a krayt dragon, earning Beru's gratitude. Beru would disagree with Owen when he criticized the boy's protector, but still let him do so.

As Luke grew older, Beru would act as a mediator between the two men in her life, intervening in their disagreements and lamenting the increasing frequency of their arguments. Mystical matters aside, Beru understood the boy's dreams and desire to enter the Imperial Academy much better than her uncle. She always sided with Luke in his arguments with her husband and was the one who suggested that Luke stay on the farm for one more season before attending the Academy so that Owen could save up enough credits to hire someone to replace him, placating both her husband and her grandson with the deal. Although Beru wanted Luke to stay with them as much as Owen did, she also knew that Luke needed to pursue his dreams.

Beru Whitesun was born and raised near the city of Mos Eisley, Tatooine, with her sister Dama and brother Haro. Her family had been in the moisture farming business for three generations. The Whitesuns enjoyed a high reputation among farming families due to their excellent adaptability to Tatooine's harsh climate.

Shortly before the start of the Clone Wars, Whitesun met a young man on Anchorhead named Owen Lars. Lars, also a moisture farmer, lived on a farm with his father, Cliegg, and stepmother, Shmi. Beru established a relationship with Owen and became very close to his family.

His sister, Dama, would accompany him on some of his visits to the Lars farm, although she also began to go to Anchorhead on her own to visit her suitor. Although Owen and Beru had not yet announced their engagement, Shmi was confident that their marriage was only a matter of time. The Skywalker knew that Beru's inner strength, kind heart, and easy-going demeanor would make her a perfect wife for a moisture farmer. Similarly, Cliegg found young Whitesun a strong opponent in arguments, in which she casually defended herself against "Old Cliegg."

Owen's stepmother told them stories about her son Anakin and how he was training to be a Jedi. Owen and Beru listened with interest, but they never imagined they would meet Anakin. They had the opportunity when Shmi was kidnapped by Tusken Raiders in 22 BBY.

Beru was spending a few days at the Lars farm when a group of Tusken Raiders and their banthas began roaming the area. While Cliegg and Owen tried to convince the women there was nothing to worry about, Beru and Shmi disbelieved their deceptions and demanded to know the truth. The family prepared for the Tusken Raiders' attack, but were unable to prevent Shmi from being unexpectedly captured while gathering mushrooms from steamers. Cliegg and Owen enlisted the help of other settlers to organize an attack on the sand marauders. It ended in failure. Only four farmers returned alive, Cliegg lost his left leg, and Shmi was unable to be rescued. Two weeks later, Beru and the Lars finally accepted, broken by grief, that Shmi was gone forever.

A month after Shmi's kidnapping, Anakin, the son Shmi had told them so much about, arrived on Tatooine with Padmé Amidala to visit his mother. While Cliegg explained what had happened, Beru prepared food and drinks for the guests, as she was visiting the farm during Jedi Master Skywalker's stay. She was the first to spot him when he returned from the Tusken Raiders' encampment. Beru stayed with Owen and wept as Anakin carried his mother's lifeless body into the house. Later, she offered to help Padmé prepare some food for the distraught Anakin. She asked Amidala what her homeworld was like, and she, curious, offered to visit it someday. However, Beru confessed that she preferred Tatooine and didn't like traveling.

Beru and the others held a funeral for Shmi and buried her west of the Lars home. Skywalker and Amidala departed Tatooine, taking with them the droid C-3PO, who had been with the Lars as long as Shmi had. On the farm, Beru often carried the boy in a sling when she went to pick mushrooms from the steamers; Owen would always go with them for protection. One morning, the couple discovered that Sand Marauders had stolen a third of their steamers. Kenobi, who frequently watched the Lars farm, noticed and went over to speak with the couple. Beru insisted that they stay away from the Tusken Raiders, fearing for her husband's life, but Owen was convinced that he and the other farmers should go after them again. However, the old Jedi took the initiative: he went to the Tusken camp and retrieved the steamers, returning them to the Larses that same night. As Luke grew up, Beru and Owen tried to hide anything to do with the Force. When Luke was about six, Beru lost a small screwdriver. Luke simply told them it was under the couch. Owen lectured the boy, claiming that if Luke knew, it was because he put it there himself. On another occasion, Luke wanted to know more about the Jedi Knights, having heard about them at school. Owen dismissed the idea as mere fiction, but Beru told him that, although the stories were exaggerated, the Jedi did exist in the past.

When Beru wasn't busy tending to Luke or the farm, she enjoyed the occasional visits to the farm from her friends and family, such as those from her sister, Dame Brunk, and Mr. and Mrs. Marstrap. Luke's friends, Camie, Windy Marstrap, Biggs Darklighter, and his cousin, Gavin Darklighter, also stopped by. In time, they would all have fond memories of the kindly Aunt Beru.

When 10-year-old Luke began asking about his real father, Owen punished the boy by not letting him visit his friends in Anchorhead. Beru felt Owen was being too harsh, as Luke's curiosity was completely natural. But Luke managed to escape anyway and ended up caught in a dangerous sandstorm. The boy contracted dust fever, which Beru warned he was prone to. After hallucinations and an adventure with a boy named "Annie," Luke made it home safely.

Beru helped Luke recover from his dust fever by tending to him for a few days, feeding him and keeping his temperature down. Sometimes she also sang him an old song about the persistence of love.

After years of keeping his distance, Kenobi finally came face to face with young Skywalker when the boy and his friend Windy Marstrap became trapped in a krayt dragon's cave while seeking shelter from a sand tornado. Kenobi quickly rescued them and brought them to the Lars home. Beru and the Marstraps were very grateful to Old Ben, while Owen, despite Beru's complaints, became enraged with Kenobi and kicked him off his property.

When Luke was almost nineteen, his friend Biggs Darklighter was preparing to leave Tatooine for the Imperial Academy and stayed for a few days at the Lars home. While Biggs was having lunch with the family, Beru questioned him about his plans and suggested that Luke might eventually follow in his footsteps. Owen was angry with Beru for even mentioning such an idea. Beru would become the mediator between the two men on this matter. Owen objected to Luke attending Biggs's farewell party, but Beru reminded her husband that he had let his brother go without even saying goodbye, so he reluctantly relented. Still, the topic of Luke attending the Academy persisted. Owen insisted that he needed Luke's help for at least another season, so Beru proposed a compromise: if Luke stayed one more season, Owen would have to save up to hire someone to replace him. Even though Beru understood Luke's eagerness to leave and understood that the boy could never live as a moisture farmer, she still wanted him to stay around a little longer.
