Persona Attributes
Adam Murray.
Adam Murray is a light-skinned man with fluffy blond hair. He is wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with the Baythorne Paranormal Society logo on the back. Adam is a very sincere and serious person, he often asks Jonah to be serious and gets annoyed when he doesn't. Despite this, it is shown that Adam behaves extremely reckless when alternatives are involved, as the thought of the danger inside the Torres house prompted him to investigate it more. He has also been shown to be impatient and irritable. It is currently unknown why Adam is so fascinated by the alternatives, or why he is searching for his dead mother, although a very obvious connection can be made to his past, it is unclear how Adam remembered any of these events as a child. Adam is shown to be hostile and very unfriendly, even saying, "I don't have any friends" when Sarah tries to explain to him why he should make a video in honor of Jonah.
Mandela Catalogue, Vol. 2
Adam, introduced as Victim 3, receives a phone call from an unnamed woman claiming to hear the sounds of her dead cat. When his friend, Jonah, offers to call him an alt cat, Adam quickly asks him to shut up, but the woman says she doesn't believe it's an alt cat and that it's only his spirit roaming the house. She asks if the guys can help him get out of her life, to which they agree after promising $500 a night for three nights. After packing their belongings in the trunk, the car won't start. They go through their options: either fix the car or steal someone else's car. Adam tries to fix their car before they decide to just steal another car. Along the way, Adam and Jonah make small talk, during which it is revealed that they are both orphans who have been on the run all their lives. Jonah also questions the existence of alternatives and the banning of screens and mirrors, saying she doubts that "this guy's face could show up" on their GPS. Arriving at the location, Adam goes to the house alone, trying unsuccessfully to contact Jonah. As the night ends, Adam discovers only one locked door. The next morning, Jonah suggests they leave, claiming that he doesn't like the atmosphere in the house. Adam tells Jonah to calm down, claiming that the house is empty, and before Jonah can continue, they are interrupted by a woman's scream coming from inside the house. Adam is further seduced by the scream and convinces the poor Hispanic man to stay another night. During the second night, strange events occur, such as Jonah's voice coming out of Adam's receiver screaming "OH MY GOD, FOR YOU". At one point, the voice interrupts them both, claiming to be watching them. As they try to figure out what's going on, the scene cuts to a clip from the Beginner's Bible where Eve convinces Adam to take a bite from the forbidden fruit. Afterward, Adam says that the apple was delicious, but now he's scared. Adam falls unconscious, and an alternate appears, calling Adam a fool for following
Mandela Catalogue, Vol. 2
calling Adam a fool for following the shepherds, and that he should instead follow his voice so they don't wake the others. After Adam wakes up, he sends Jonah an image of a wide-open basement door and asks Jonah to call him, resulting in an argument between them. Adam tells his partner that he is invincible and that they shouldn't have been looking for him. The other then says that if by some miracle Adam gets out of the house, he won't be himself anymore and he won't be there to confirm it, which causes Adam to yell at his friend, telling him to leave. Upon entering the basement, Adam discovers that the meowing was coming from an analog television, the cat on the screen is from the video "Stress Assessment in Toddlers" from "The Mandela Catalogue Vol. 1". 6 shows himself on the analog TV, and Adam asks who he is. The intruder asks if his boyfriend remembers him, and the TV screen flashes footage from the first season of The Mandela Catalogue, lingering on a white screen that plays a music box playing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and then cuts to an image of an upside-down woman with long hair. The alternates chastise Adam by asking him what he did. Adam replies "something right." The Intruders taunt him again, telling him that no one will help him and that no one knows where he is. Adam tries to contact Jonah via walkie-talkie, but is unsuccessful.
Winter Break 2009.
Prior to Vol. 2, the FBI had authorized the arrest of Jonah and Adam. Throughout Volume 2, it is implied that this warrant was issued not only because of being associated with the possibly criminal in nature Baythorne Paranormal Society, but also because of breaking and entering the USDTP building and stealing technology from there, thus breaking the TV and Mirror Destruction Order.
Mandela Catalogue, Vol. 333
Adam's backstory is greatly expanded in Volume 333, giving us a small glimpse of the day before his abduction and his parents' relationship, as well as implying some minor turmoil around him. At the beginning of the episode, we see his parents' divorce papers, stating that their names are Lynn Murray and Jude Murray, and that he is their only child. Lynn is then seen calling Jude and explaining that Adam keeps crying and waking up at the same time every night. Jude suggests that it was caused by the TV, but Lynn replies that the TV has been off for a few days and adds that it could be caused by an imaginary friend. It's implied from several clips in which the child sees an analog TV quickly changing channels, that turning off the TV didn't work, and that Adam was still being manipulated by 6 despite Lynn's efforts. This eventually led him to watch The Might of the Subconscious and unconsciously made the alternate appear in his house before he was kidnapped.
Mandela Catalogue, Vol. 4
The fourth episode tells us about the origins of the Baythorne Paranormal Society when it was still just a school club founded by Sarah Heathcliff. Adam sends Sarah a letter expressing his desire to join and informs her that he has had experience with paranormal activity before. A month after joining the club, on July 11, 2007, Adam becomes a co-founder. A few days later, Adam and Sarah investigate a crime scene in an abandoned house in Mandela County, where they encounter the influence of the alternatives. Sarah was very frightened, unlike Adam, who was watching with interest. Afterwards, Sarah declares that she no longer intends to investigate with Adam and advises him to find another partner, who later becomes Jonah Marshall. Since Adam has probably already been exposed to MRL by then (or is an alternate at all), he behaves in ways that are uncharacteristically unhealthy. This is evident in his reaction to alternatives and his attitude towards others, particularly his best friend Jonah Marshall. Adam is extremely selfish and doesn't care about anything in the case except footage of paranormal activity. Even the realization that Jonah is likely dead after their joint investigation in volume two doesn't make Adam feel anything. After Sarah learns of Jonah's death through correspondence, she forces Adam to make a video honoring a deceased member of the community. Adam reluctantly creates the video, but mistakenly sends the wrong file. When Sarah is about to get into a verbal altercation with Adam about the changes in his personality, he sends her the real video. The file turns out to be horribly distorted, containing footage of Adam's ex-girlfriend Evelyn talking about his strange behavior and footage of Jonah Marshall's death.
Mandela Catalogue, Vol. 4
Near the end of the episode, Adam receives an email from an unknown sender, who ends up being Six(6), asking him to confirm if the recipient is Adam Murray. Despite Adam being unwilling to talk, Six manages to make contact with him via a video file. During this, Six asks if Adam remembers the very night he went missing and asserts the fact that Adam is in fact "not his real self". The video is interrupted by a voicemail message from Sarah, where she does venture to voice her concerns about Adam's behavior (and the video). After Sarah asks who Adam is talking to, she asks him to call her back.
Intruder (6)
6, also known as the Intruder, is the main antagonist in the Mandela Catalog , a mysterious force that caused the disappearance of 34266 children in several counties, leading to the banning of most screen technology and mirrors by 2009.
BPS (The Baythorne Paranormal Society)
The Baythorne Paranormal Society, formerly known as the Baythorne Paranormal Club, is a paranormal investigation organization founded by Sarah Heathcliff at Baythorne High School. Originally serving as a school club, the club was eventually transformed into an inter-district paranormal investigation organization shortly after the addition of Adam Murray of Werksha High. This organization investigates people's homes for a cheap amount per night in search of ghosts, as their name implies, though it is implied that they also investigate possible alternative encounters. They are wanted by the FBI, most likely for violating countermeasures with the 6 imposed by the Department of Temporal Apparitions because the devices used in their investigations, such as ghost boxes, have screen technology. BPS has online followers that are managed by Sarah.
Sarah Heathcliff.
Sarah Heathcliff is Mark Heathcliff's younger sister and the main character in the short video "Old Mandela Police Website Leak (REAL)". She later returns as a minor character alongside Adam Murray in Volume 4. Sarah is a professional, outgoing, but strict individual. It turns out that Sarah is the founder of BPS, having started it as a school club. She went to Bythorn High School, so she and her family probably moved from Mandela after Mark died.
Jonah Marshall.
Jonah Marshall is the protagonist of The Mandela Catalog. A member of the Baythorne Paranormal Society, he and Adam Murray are wanted by the FBI and are currently on the run, posing as paranormal investigators, following Adam's search for someone he lost. Jonah is a tanned man with a tall face and white dyed hair. He is wearing a dark jacket with a light colored hood. Jonah is a carefree but very anxious man. When Adam asks to be serious, Jonah often responds with some sort of joke, but always avoids harm, such as staying in their car while Adam explores his client's house, or running away from the house without Adam at the end of Mandela Catalogue Volume 2.
The Alternatives.
The Alternatives are the main antagonists in the Mandela Catalogue series. They are a mysterious species of collective intelligence that plans to destroy humans, mostly by driving their victims to suicide. The Alternatives are evil and mysterious humanoid creatures with shape-shifting abilities, which they use to mimic humans. Their true form appears as a vaguely humanoid silhouette with white eyes. They use this mimicry to blend in with normal humans, hunting down the person whose form they have copied in order to kill them. Once they find and corner their victim, the Alternatives will use psychological warfare to convince that person to commit suicide - their methods of doing this are still unclear, but it is implied that by speaking to their victims in a certain tone of voice or on certain topics, the Alternative Characters can cause them Metaphysical Personality Disorder, driving the target insane. They have also been shown to use brute force to kill.
Evelin Miller
Evelin Miller, or simply Eve, is the ex-girlfriend of Adam Murray, breaking up before the events of The Mandela Catalogue Vol. 2. Originally, she serves as a supporting character in Act 2. Evelin is a fair-skinned girl with wavy dark hair, bangs mostly covering her eyes, and dark brown or green eyes. She is shown to be a very curious and polite young woman. Despite breaking up with her ex, Adam Murray, she still seems to care about him when she didn't hear from him for days.
