Bagra is the daughter of Ilya Morozov, a famous and powerful Grisha who created three amplifiers and worked as a carpenter in a local village. From an early age, Bagra had the unique ability to summon darkness, which caused her abandoned mother to think of her daughter as a monster and favor her younger daughter. One day, out of jealousy and loneliness, Bagra killed her sister. Their father, Morozov, desperate to save his child, brought the child back to life, unwittingly making her Morozov's third amplifier. The villagers, however, took this as witchcraft and tried to kill both Ilya and the reanimated girl. The moment they were both thrown into the river by people, Bagra saw her father for the last time.

Many years later, Baghra and an unknown, powerful Heartrender conceived a child who would become the Darkling. Baghra named her son Alexander, though since they had to live in secrecy, it is unlikely anyone other than her called him that. Baghra is a stern teacher to Alina Starkov, the newly discovered Sun Summoner, but it turns out she does this to make Alina strong enough to protect herself. After Winterfest, Alina learns that Baghra is actually the Darkling's mother. Baghra reveals her son's master plan, which involves binding Alina to him with antlers, and she convinces Alina to flee the palace.

When Alina was captured along with Mal, she became concerned about Baghra once the Darkling informed her that he knew who helped her escape. He said that she was isolated, but Alina feared that she was killed, which the Darkling laughs at. It is revealed that the Darkling gouged out Baghra's eyes as punishment for helping Alina escape. Baghra is angry at Alina, claiming that she should have disappeared and never returned, never found the stag, and never been caught by the Darkling. Baghra claims that her son cannot be saved now because of Alina's stupidity, and refuses to speak to her.

Bagra boards the Kingfisher with the royal family, as Alina requested from Nikolai. She and her servant boy Misha are taken to safety in West Ravka. Alina learns that Bagra is still alive and well, and is being cared for by Nikolai at the Monastery of St. Damian, a pilgrimage site turned observatory hundreds of years ago, where the remaining survivors, including the King and Queen, are housed. She teaches Alina how to use the shortcut to slice off the top of a mountain range. During this conversation, she tells Alina her entire story. She was the first daughter of Morozov, and was never accepted because of the darkness she summoned, a rare and unknown power. She tells Alina that she raised her son Alexander (the Darkling) with pride and ambition, which she admits was a mistake. During the Darkling's attack on their hideout, Baghra jumps off the side of a mountain to create a distraction. Thanks to her sacrifice, Alina, Mal, and several others manage to escape to find the Firebird.
From this point on, it was assumed that she died, but it was never confirmed whether she actually died by jumping off the cliff.
