As a young man, Joel married and had a daughter, Sarah, but the marriage proved to be short-lived. Burdened with a lot of responsibility, he did not have the opportunity to attend college. Sarah's mother left him shortly after the birth of her daughter and he, being a single father, raised and educated Sarah alone. Joel worked in construction, as a carpenter. Before the epidemic, Joel was about to start his own business. Just hours before the epidemic, his daughter gives her father a watch in honor of his 32nd birthday, and Joel, later, will never part with it in memory of her. When an outbreak begins, Joel and Sarah try to get out of town and are joined by Tommy in his Jeep. After running into a huge traffic jam and realizing that the way forward is blocked, they try to get out by another route through the crowds of panicked people running towards them. The car gets into an accident and everyone is forced to continue on foot. Joel, carrying Sarah in his arms, tries to escape, but runs into an armed Soldier. A soldier reports to his superiors that there are two survivors on the perimeter, but instead of helping them, he is ordered to eliminate them. Joel tries to shield Sarah from the bullets and throws her aside with him. When Tommy arrives, he kills a soldier in the head with a pistol, but Joel runs up to his daughter lying on the ground nearby and discovers that she has been mortally wounded after all. After losing a lot of blood, Sarah dies in the arms of a crying Joel. Twenty years after the outbreak of the epidemic that killed millions of people in the United States, Joel is working as a smuggler in the quarantine zone of Boston. Joel initially keeps an eye on Tommy, but the brothers' actions to survive cause Tommy remorse and nightmares, causing him to leave his brother and join the Fireflies)}]
