— The Darkling. "Ruin and Rising"
The Darkling is a mysterious, beautiful Grisha, the leader of the Second Army. His real name is Alexander Morozov.
Appearance
The Darkling is described as a tall, handsome young man who appears to be not much older than Alina, despite his true age being approximately six centuries old. He has dark hair, quartz eyes, and sharp, handsome features.Personality
The Darkling is later revealed to be an extremely dark and manipulative individual. He was power hungry and attempted to create his own amplifiers, which resulted in the creation of the Fold, where his powers were rendered useless. He later sought to use the Fold against his enemies, but in the process created the Volcra, who prevented him from expanding it. He is ambitious, proud, and domineering. He loves Ravka and wants the Grisha to be free of slavery and oppression, and planned to use the Fold as leverage against the very people who had been killing and burning Grisha for centuries, not just his own enemies. He was obsessed with Alina because she was like him: the only one of her kind who could share his loneliness and eternity.
Story
The Darkling was born many centuries ago and his age has never been stated; he told Alina that he was around 120 years old, claiming to be the great-great-great-grandson of the Black Heretic. He is undoubtedly over 400 years old, as this was around the time of the creation of the Shadow Fold. He is the son of Baghra and an unknown Heartrender. His mother was the one who raised him, giving him ambition and pride. The Darkling's greed led to the creation of the Shadow Fold, during the period when he was known as the Black Heretic. Over the years, the Darkling served many kings and faked his death many times. He planned to expand the Fold and gain power over Ravka, but he needed the Sun Summoner to restrain the Volcra and carry out his plans. Alina Starkov was brought before the Darkling after a failed attempt to cross the Shadow Fold, resulting in a mysterious light saving her and her friend Malen Oretsev. After witnesses reported what they had seen on the skiff, the Darkling did not believe that Alina was the Sun Summoner and decided to test her. Shrouding the room in darkness, he tried to call upon the magic within her, but she actively resisted. Rather than fall for her trick, the Darkling decided to use physical force, cutting her arm with a knife, and the pain caused a response in Alina: a blinding white light that destroyed the darkness he had caused. It is later revealed that the Darkling is also a living amplifier, a person who can increase Grisha's powers. There are also inanimate objects that are used as amplifiers, but only the Darkling's most favored Grisha can have them. In the palace, the Darkling had little contact with Alina, but one day he appeared in Baghra's hut and told Alina that he might be able to get her the most powerful amplifier.
After Alina finally accepted her powers, the Darkling visited her again during her training. He still had not found the stag whose antlers he promised her, but asked her to have faith in him and kissed her, much to their surprise. After the King and Queen's Winter Feast, Alina learned that Baghra was the Darkling's mother, that he was the Black Heretic who created the Shadow Fold, and that his plan was to use Alina to fight off the volcra that were preventing him from using the Fold. When he captured Alina and Mal after they escaped, he used the stag's antlers to bind her to him, and then revealed that he planned to kill Mal with the volcra. He used Alina's power to show off his power over the Fold, and easily scared the ambassadors and messengers who came to the demonstration into subduing them. When he ordered Mal to be thrown overboard, Alina broke free from his control and left the people on the ship to fight off the volcra.
By the end of the book, it is unknown if the Darkling survived the volcra attack, but he has lived so long that he would not easily be killed. Following the escape of Alina Starkov and Malen Oretsev, the Darkling works tirelessly to capture them. A trail of payments Alina made using her golden hairpins leads the Darkling to them. He discovers that the couple have fled to Novyi Zem and taken up residence in a boarding house using one of the remaining hairpins. When Alina and Mal return to their home, they find the Darkling sitting casually on a rickety chair as if he himself were royalty; he is surrounded by his supporters, who appear to be terrified by his presence. He orders Ivan to hold Mal hostage as he repeatedly expresses his "gratitude" to Alina for helping him further expand his power. However, survival in the Fold has come at a cost. The Darkling now bears volcra scars on his face as a reminder of the origin of his new power, and Alina notices that when the Darkling uses his power, it seems to feed off of him, causing damage
his physical health. He reveals to Alina that his ability to manipulate darkness has evolved into manifesting abominations/volcra-like creatures that cannot be destroyed by light (except by cutting them). The Darkling then brings Mal and Alina aboard the Verrader, a stolen ship belonging to a notorious pirate named Sturmhond. After Alina and the other Grisha are "captured" by the Apparat and remain underground in the White Cathedral, the Darkling rules Ravka on the surface. Alina visits the Darkling through the bond they have developed, and he misleads her by claiming that he is going to stage an attack on West Ravka. Alina tells Nikolai and the twelve Grisha she was traveling with. Just as Alina and Nikolai are about to leave, the Darkling attacks them. In revenge for Nikolai stealing Alina, the Darkling fills his lungs with the blight, which transforms him into a volcra-like creature. After his mother's death, he calls out to Alina using the shared tether, but she refuses to answer. He later destroys Keramzin, kills the Grisha instructors, Botkin and Ana Kuya, and shows Alina their corpses hanging from an oak tree. His final appearance is at the end of the story, during the Battle of the Shadow Fold. He engages in a fight with Alina, but when she loses her powers, he appears upset. Alina uses this distraction to stab him in the chest with Grisha's steel dagger. Afterwards, they share a final moment together, where he asks Alina to burn his corpse because he did not want his grave to be desecrated. His corpse is burned at the end of the story, along with Ruby's corpse, which was disguised as Alina's by Zhenya.
Appearance and personality
The Darkling is described as a tall and handsome young man who does not appear to be much older than Alina despite his ancient age. He has jet-black hair, gray eyes the color of quartz, and sharp, handsome features. As it is later revealed, the Darkling is an extremely dark man and a skilled manipulator. He was careless with the corruption and created the Fold to use against his enemies, but in the process accidentally created the Volcra that would prevent him from expanding it. He is also ambitious. He wants the Grisha to be free from slavery and oppression and planned to use the Fold as leverage against those humans who built the pyres (where they burn Grisha), as well as against his own enemies. He was so obsessed with Alina because she had the ability to be like him and control a unique power.
Grisha is a person who practices the Small Science.
Grisha are divided into three orders: Corporal, Ethereal, and Substantial, with each order further divided into special groups, but sometimes among the Grisha there appear carriers of unusually rare abilities, for example, to summon light, like Alina Starkova, or darkness, like the Darkling. Both are classified as Ethereals and included in the Ethereal order.
Ravkan Grisha
Most Grisha show their powers at a young age. A special test is used to determine whether children have special powers. To detect talent, the Grisha who tests uses pain, but the test can be fooled by inflicting other pain on oneself to distract oneself. If a child shows talent, he is sent to training. Many Grisha eventually join the army. Army Grisha wear a uniform, the color of the main coat and the color of the trim of which makes it easy to determine which order the Grisha belongs to.Ravka relies on the Grisha for its safety from its enemies. The Second Army is composed entirely of Grisha and was briefly led by the Darkling, as well as Sun Summoner Alina Starkov.
Although the Grisha fight in most of Ravka's wars and inflict the greatest damage on their enemies, they are considered witches and corrupt sorcerers and are viewed with suspicion and distrust by humans, including those serving in the First Army. Following the Sun Summoner's rebellion, a tentative alliance was formed between the First and Second Armies, which still despise each other. Both armies served under the official, if somewhat superficial, command of King Alexander III before Nikolai Lantsov inherited the throne of Ravka. Ravka also recruits Grisha from other lands, primarily Fjerda, Novyi Zem, and the Wandering Isle.

Facts
The English word "Grisha" is a borrowing from the Russian name "Grisha", which is a diminutive of the name Grigori. One of the most famous owners of this name is Grigori Rasputin, a charlatan who became an adviser to the imperial family and was widely known as a magician and saint in his lifetime.
In Novy Zem, Grisha is called Zowa, which means “blessed.”
Note
The abilities of the Tailors blur the lines between Fabricators and Heartrenders, so they do not fall into either Order.
Heartrender are Grisha of the Corporal Order. They can use their power to damage a person's internal organs. Their ability ranges from slowing a person's pulse to ripping the air out of their lungs. The target must be within their line of sight. They are feared by other Grisha and are considered the most valuable soldiers. In the Second Army, they wear a red kaftan with black embroidery. Abilities
Heartrender manipulates the body on a molecular level, usually with harmful consequences.
Lungs: They can take air from a person's lungs and keep them breathing as long as they are under the influence of the Heartbeater.
Heart: They can cause heart attacks, slow breathing to the point that someone passes out, or speed up the heartbeat to dangerous speeds.
Interfering with healing: They can slow down the healing process rather than speed it up.
Affecting Emotions: By stimulating the release of certain chemicals in the body, Heartrenders can affect a person's emotions. When under the influence of parem, a Heartrender's abilities are enhanced to extraordinary levels. Nina Zenik, a talented Heartrender, claimed that only one Heartrender under parem could tip the scales of a war between nations.
Mind Control: When under the influence of parem, they are able to force a large group of people to follow their commands.
Face Tailoring: If a particular Heartrender has any sartorial talent,
case, he will be strengthened to the level of master.
Enhanced Vision: By increasing the range of their sight, parem allows Heartrenders to hit targets at much greater distances than normal.
Flaws
Like all Grisha, they cannot use their abilities when their arm movement is restricted.
They require sight for their powers to affect targets. Anyone too far away, hidden from view, or out of sight cannot be affected.
Heartrender abilities do not seem to have any effect on animals.Known Heartrenders
Ivan
Tamara Kir-Batar
Tolya Yul-Batar
Nina Zenik[1]
Fedor Kaminsky
Sergey Beznikov
Notes
After recovering from the effects of parem, Nina's abilities change noticeably; she appears to have lost her normal Heartrender abilities and gained the ability to manipulate dead and decaying flesh and bone. Ivan is one of the Darkling's most beloved Grisha. He is a powerful Heartrender and one of the few Grisha who possesses an amplifier. History
Ivan had two brothers, an uncle, and a father who served in the First Army and died fighting in the wars. Eventually, Ivan was tested by Grisha the examiner and taken to the school where he was taught to be Grisha. He was asked to accompany the Darkling, an honor Ivan gladly accepted.
He eventually became one of the Darkling's favorite Grisha and was allowed to take an amplifier for himself: the Sherborne Bear, which he killed and took the claws from the bear's front paw to wear on a chain.
Shadow and Bone
Ivan grew up developing a fierce loyalty to the Darkling, believing that only he could save them and give them peace, so he fully supported him in his plan to take over the Fold. When Alina Starkov was taken to the Little Palace after her powers were first discovered, the Darkling often tasked Ivan with watching over her. When Alina was brought back after a failed escape attempt, he tried to let her see how he did it by telling her about his past.
Healers are Grisha of the Corporal class who can use their powers to heal others.
They can mend bones, heal wounds, etc. However, they cannot heal wounds inflicted by Nicho'ya. In the Second Army, they wear a red kaftan with gray embroidery.
Tailors are Grisha of the Corporal Order. Tailors alter people's appearances. They were once considered rare and special; however, in Ravka, tailoring is now taught to all Corporal students of the Second Army. Their uniform is a red kaftan with blue embroidery.
Zhenya Safina was the first tailor to serve the Queen of Ravka before the Ravkan Civil War. Her tasks included improving the condition of the skin, body, and hair, applying makeup, and repairing superficial damage. Her abilities were considered low-grade talent for Grisha. Abilities
Tailors can change a person's eyes and hair if they have the right material, either by removing or tattooing them. The prime example of a Tailor is Sturmhond, as he was tailored with red hair, green eyes, and a crooked nose, when in reality he has blonde hair, brown eyes, and only a small bump on his nose. Tailors are skilled at changing a person's bone structure and the shape of their face. They can also remove skin imperfections and add color to the face. A skilled Tailor can also change the shape of the body, such as the position of the shoulders. More skilled Tailors can permanently alter someone's face, and possibly permanently alter their features. When Corporal under the influence of jurda parem use their adaptive abilities, the changes made to a person are extremely skilled and nearly irreversible. In the case of Wylan Van Eck, who looked like Kuwei Yul-Bo, the only person who was able to restore his original face was Zhenya Safina.
Squallers are Grisha of the Ethereal order. They can manipulate the wind, raising or lowering air pressure to fill a ship's sails or move objects.
In the Second Army they wear blue caftans with silver embroidery.Known Abilities
Squallers can manipulate air pressure to hurl objects or people into the air in combat. The Squallers' power was also used by Sturmhond to propel his flying ships in sieges and storms, as well as for destruction and lifting.
The Squaller's power can also be used to create acoustic anomalies, such as the one used by Zoya Nazyalenskaya in Ruin and Rising and later by other Squallers who follow Alina Starkova. This allows the sound to travel further and more clearly, or masks the sound altogether. Summoning lightning is a trick that Squallers can also perform. However, they were not allowed to use this ability during the Darkling's Second Army due to its unpredictable nature, as pointed out by both Alina Starkova in the Shadow and Bone trilogy and Sturmhond in the Six of Crows duology. While it is unclear whether Squallers are trained in this technique under the Grisha Triumvirate, Zoya Nazyalenskaya summons and uses lightning in The Crooked Kingdom to restart a boy's heart.
Inferni are Grisha from the order of Ethereals.
Inferni can manipulate fire by gathering flammable particles of matter such as methane or hydrogen; he can summon existing matter, but still requires a catalyst (i.e. heat) to start the chain reaction that will produce flame. As such, Inferni usually carries flint with him, which can be used to ignite a spark.
In the Second Army they wear a blue caftan with red embroidery.
The Tidemakers are Grisha of the Ethereal Order.
Their abilities lie in the manipulation of water.
In the Second Army they wear blue caftans with pale blue embroidery.
Under the influence of jurda parem, torrentials can alter the state of matter around them and themselves. They can also draw out blood, drying people out, which once almost happened to Wylan and Jesper.[1]
Durasts are Grisha of the Substantial order. Because Alkhem and Durasts often share workspaces and perform similar tasks, they are not usually distinguished and are referred to only as Fabricators.
The hardy wear purple caftans with grey embroidery.
Capabilities
They can manipulate glass, steel, wood, plants, stone, or anything solid at a molecular level. This can range from changing the shape, texture, or composition of a solid. They can make flowers bloom, remove pigment from an object, move objects without touching them, and even absorb harmful substances from another person's body into their own. Known Durables

Facts
The word Durast comes from the Latin word durus, which means hard or strong. This suggests that Durast works with hard materials, and that their products are durable and long-lasting. Ilya Morozov is the grandfather of the Darkling, so he is great and created three amplifiers
David is a great, intimidated, scared guy of about 20 years old.
The Alkems are Grisha of the Substantial Order.
They specialize in chemicals such as explosive powders and poisons. Since Alchems and Durniks often share their workspace and perform similar work, they are not distinguished and are referred to only as Fabricators.
The Alkemi wear purple caftans with red embroidery.
The Little Palace is the seat of the Second Army of Ravka. It is located near the Grand Palace in Ravka's capital, Os Alta. Following the Darkling's attempted coup and escape, the Little Palace is taken over by the First Army, with armed soldiers guarding its perimeter to prevent the few remaining Grisha from escaping.
The palace was partially destroyed during the Darkling's attack on Os Alta.
