Story
The Creation of Shadow Canyon
Centuries ago, known then as the Black Heretic, the Darkling returned home to his partner, Luda, who was also a Grisha healer. Shortly after his return, their home was surrounded by the King's soldiers, demanding the Darkling surrender. The Darkling complied and surrendered peacefully. However, the King's men had no intention of bringing him and pierced the Darkling with arrows. Fortunately, Luda remained inside, healing the Darkling. However, one of the soldiers managed to capture Luda and kill her. Enraged by her death, the Darkling used Slash, killing nearly a dozen of the King's men. The Darkling rode to the sanctuary with Luda's body, hoping to heal her, but he was too late. The Darkling then informed his mother of soldiers marching west. Baghra accused the Darkling of frightening the King, so now he, in turn, was trying to make the Grisha fear him. The Darkling reminded Baghra that she had taught him to kill, implying that their blood was on her hands as well as his. She urged him to flee west to Kerch and await the king's death. Then he could return under a new name and make peace with the new king. However, the Darkling refused to flee while the Grisha were in trouble. He sought to teach them to fight, but since so few truly knew how to fight, the Darkling decided he would create a new army, as Morozov had done, creating new life to amplify their power with abomination. Despite his mother's warning, the Darkling searched the archives for Morozov's journals. Just outside the sanctuary stood more of the king's men, armed with arrows. The king wanted the Darkling under guard. Surrounded by dozens of soldiers, the Darkling raised his hands. Using abomination, he transformed the king's men into his army, inadvertently creating the Fold in the process.
Awakening of the Sun Summoner
General Kirigan arrives at the First Army camp to escort a Scythian ship traveling through the Fold to Novokribirsk for supplies. General Kirigan requests that Alina Starkov be brought to his tent after learning that she allegedly destroyed the volcra attacking the Scythian with light. He suspects that she might be the prophesied Sun Summoner and asks who she is. Alina insists that she is nothing more than a common cartographer. However, when Zoya swears that Alina emitted scorching light, General Kirigan asks where she grew up and when the tests took place, but Alina claims she doesn't remember. He then grabs her forearm and makes a small cut, causing a beam of light to shoot from her hand through the roof of the tent, confirming his suspicions. General Kirigan rescues Alina on the way to the Little Palace, where her carriage is attacked by Drüskelle, one of whom manages to pull her out. Alina is pulled from the cart and dragged into the field. Armed with an axe, Drüskelle extends his hand to Alina, but before he can lower his hand, General Kirigan appears and bisects the man with "Slash." He then helps Alina to her feet and accompanies her on the remaining journey to the Little Palace, during which he explains that what Alina witnessed was a caster's power known as Slash. Kirigan believes the attempt on Alina's life proves how much the enemy fears her existence. Their light show in the Fold must have alerted them. She may well be the first of her kind, but they've always had a name for her—someone who could harness the light and use it to destroy the Fold from within. But Alina refuses to be Grisha. She views her abilities as a curse, not a gift. He then asks Alina again if she was tested as a child. Alina says that she and Mal hid during the testing because she didn't want to part with her only friend.
Blessing of the King
General Kirigan escorts Alina to the King. Hoping that with his blessing, Alina will remain in the Little Palace for training. Kirigan introduces her as the Sun Summoner who will rid them of the Shadow Fold. The King and Queen, like the others, are skeptical of Alina's supposed ability to manipulate light. Kirigan fills the room with darkness before grabbing Alina's wrist and invoking her powers. Alina summons light, illuminating the entire room. The King applauds and agrees that Alina should remain in the Little Palace with General Kirigan for training. Before parting, he welcomes Alina home.
Alina's Temptation
General Kirigan asks Alina to join him for a horseback ride through the palace, though she prefers not to wear the black caftan he's chosen for her, as black is his color. He leads Alina to the fountain and asks how she's adjusting to life in the palace. Alina admits to feeling lonely, a feeling the Darkling knows all too well. As a boy, he hid by the fountain once he realized he was a descendant of the Black Heretic, the creator of the Fold and the most hated Grisha in Ravka. He would walk to the fountain, toss a coin, and wish he could be someone else. Kirigan dedicated his life to atoning for his ancestor's sin, but he never saw it as a solution, only a reminder of the problem. Alina is his solution, but she fears that if she fails to destroy the Fold, she will become the most hated Grisha in Ravka. Kirigan promises that he won't let that happen and assures her that they will change the world.
General Kirigan informs Fyodor that Nina Zenik was on a high-priority mission for him and that she failed to report. He fears she has been captured and tasks Fyodor with finding her.
General Kirigan receives an unexpected visit from Alina late at night while reviewing a map of Ravka. They can only defeat their enemies if they present a united front, but there have been rumors of an uprising in the west, led by a general of the First Army. Kirigan is disgusted at the thought of their own people turning their backs on them. Shadows begin to fill the room as Kirigan is overcome with grief and anger. Alina grabs his hand, and the room fills with light. Having captured his attention, she tells him he is not alone. Cupping her face in his hands, he tells her he has waited a long time for her.
Winter holiday
General Kirigan is preparing for the Winter Festival. Alina enters his room and admits that she was nervous at first, but now she's confident. The longer she spends in the palace, the more she realizes she's part of something greater and that they can offer the Grisha a bright future. When he expresses his feelings for her and tells her she means so much to everyone, Alina kisses him. That evening, Alina, dressed in a black caftan, joins Kirigan in the ballroom. He then leads Alina onto the stage and introduces her as their liberator. General Kirigan fills the room with darkness, allowing Alina to summon the light and astound the guests.
General Kirigan meets with Mal, learning that he has spotted a Stag north of Chernasti, twice the size of any other, white, with enormous antlers marked with a symbol. When Kirigan asks for the exact location, Mal demands to see Alina first, insisting they are close friends. In exchange, he will tell General Kirigan the Stag's location. Despite already knowing Mal's relationship with Alina, Kirigan asks Mal to prove he knows her by revealing things few know about her, such as her favorite flower, which Mal reveals is a blue iris. Assuming Mal is telling the truth, Kirigan promises to bring Alina to him.
General Kirigan returns to his room with Alina, where the two continue to kiss until Fyodor interrupts them, revealing that Maria and Zhenya were attacked in the fitting room and that Alina was the target. General Kirigan leaves but assures Alina he will return. However, by the time he returns, Alina is gone. He goes looking for her in the courtyard, where he finds his mother, Baghra, instead. She reveals that she got rid of Mal to prevent him from finding the Stag. Baghra knows his true intentions—to manipulate Alina into helping him expand the Canyon. He now understands that his mother is the reason for Alina's disappearance and threatens her if she is harmed.
Chasing Alina
General Kirigan interrogates the man who killed Maria while attempting to kill Alina. When Ivan monitors the man's heartbeat nearby, he discovers the prisoner is lying. Kirigan realizes that the man standing before them is actually the Guide, Arken Visser/Netflix, who secretly smuggled the Grisha out of the Little Palace to find refuge elsewhere. Kirigan had been observing Visser for some time, discovering that Nina is one of his spies. The last message he received from her was that she would be crossing the Border with the Guide and three scoundrels from Ketterdam, but they have heard nothing from Nina since. Visser insists he had nothing to do with Nina's disappearance, which Ivan confirms. Kirigan suspects Visser made a deal with the three scoundrels, but he has a stronger relationship with West Ravkan General Zlatan, who has a vision for how to govern his own country while the Fold remains intact. Visser allegedly made another deal with him to kill Alina. Visser admits this is true and offers to kill General Zlatan, but Kirigan rejects his offer before engulfing Visser in darkness.
Fyodor reports to General Kirigan that Nina was kidnapped by Fjerdans and placed on a ship with other Grisha captives bound for the Ice Yard, meaning someone must have betrayed her. Kirigan orders Fyodor to reach the western coast, travel as far north as possible, and retrieve any Grisha he finds. General Kirigan also orders him to retrieve the Fjerdans.
General Kirigan asks Zoya to join him at sunset as he leads a team in pursuit of the criminals who kidnapped Alina. Zoya asks if Alina could have left of her own free will, noting that Alina never fit in with the Palace. However, Kirigan could have treated her the same way, as the king's soldiers treated him the same way, knowing he was more important.
murder of the deer prodovzhinnya
Regarding the poisoning of the king and the conspiracy with the Apparat, Kirigan admits it's true. Continuing to serve such a king would make him a traitor to his country. Kirigan claims that everything he's ever done was to make Ravka and the Grisha safer, including putting the collar on Alina. He begs her to join him, but she refuses. Nevertheless, they board a boat and set off for the Fold.
Killing a Deer
The Darkling and his team track down Alina and Mal and prevent them from killing the Stag. Mal is gravely wounded during the scuffle, as is the Stag. General Kirigan attempts to kill the creature, but Alina deflects his blow. However, Alina can either help Mal or kill the Stag. Alina chooses Mal, allowing General Kirigan to deliver the killing blow to the Stag, decapitating it with Slash. General Kirigan recalls that when he and Alina first met, she regretted not being able to pass on her abilities to someone else. Now, Kirigan asserts, she is being given a chance. He heals Mal, as promised, and proposes that he and Alina join forces. Together, they can end all wars and protect the Grisha. Alina asks if they will destroy the Fold. He replies that they can do anything, then extends his hand to Alina. She takes his hand, and then David inserts the Stag's antlers into the collar. The antlers dig into Alina, their sharp points protruding from her shoulder blades, and another piece of antler embeds itself in Kirigan's arm, thus bridging the gap between them and allowing him to control her powers, given that he killed the Stag. General Kirigan takes Alina and Mal back to the First Army camp, where Mal is chained to the railing. Mal calls him the Black Heretic and promises to kill him at the first opportunity. Kirigan admits that Mal and Alina care deeply for each other, judging by the letters Kirigan has read. Admittedly, it may take years for Alina to forgive him, but like Grisha, Kirigan can wait while Mal ages, and one day she will forget all about him and realize that she has only one equal: the Darkling. So he doesn't need to kill Mal, as time will do it for him. General Kirigan enters Alina's tent simply to talk. However, she accuses him of being the Black Heretic and killing her friends and parents across the Fold. Karigan insists he wasn't lying to her, but only half-truths.
Canyon Expansion
The skiff enters the Fold, and General Kirigan binds Alina's feet to the ship's deck. As the volcra approach the skiff, General Kirigan uses Alina's power to create a tunnel of light for safe passage. He then reveals that he has no intention of destroying the Fold. He intends to expand it. Once they breach the other side of the Fold leading to Novokribirsk, General Kirigan expands the Fold, capturing the town and killing many innocents in the process. He declares the Fold under his control and tells the passengers to take what they saw back to their countries and spread the word, as there will be no more war with Ravka. Mal joins them on the deck, shooting several soldiers before being stopped by Ivan.
General Kirigan turns his attention to Zoya, realizing she has betrayed him. However, before he can act, he is attacked by Crows. Jesper shoots him, and Inej stabs him in the chest with a blade, though he easily pulls the knife out before pulling the darkness closer to the back of the boat, leaving Zoya and Inej vulnerable to the volcra. The Darkling then extends his hand to Alina. She grabs Inej's knife and stabs General Kirigan, removing the Stag bone embedded in his arm, granting Alina full control of her abilities as she reveals she was able to claim the Stag's power because it chose her when she chose to spare its life. She then continues to summon the light as Mal throws General Kirigan overboard. Kirigan and Mal fight near the skiff. Mal distracts Kirigan long enough for a volcra to sneak up behind him and attack him.
Despite being torn apart by the volcra, the Darkling emerges from the Fold, followed by his Nizhnyaya.
