Maegor ruled for six years and sixty-six days, and died without issue. He was succeeded by his nephew, King Jaehaerys I Targaryen, the youngest son of the late King Aenys I. The Faith Militant Revolt did not end until Jaehaerys's reign. The new king agreed to pardon all those of the Faith who laid down their swords, though he also stripped the Faith of its right to hold trials. At the Great Council of 101 AC, a burly, red-haired man-at-arms who claimed to be Maegor's bastard claimed the Iron Throne. His only proof was his mother, an old innkeeper's daughter who claimed to have been raped by Maegor. The lords believed the claim of rape, but not that it had impregnated her. Decades later, during the Dance of the Dragons, Silver Denys claimed descent from a bastard son of Maegor, but he was mutilated by the dragon Sheepstealer and killed along with his sons by the Cannibal while trying to claim a dragon. Ser Otto Hightower believed that Prince Daemon Targaryen would be a "second Maegor the Cruel" if he ever ascended the throne, and at the start of the civil war, his daughter Alicent claimed that Daemon would be "as cruel and ruthless as Maegor ever was" as a royal consort. Daemon's wife, Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, came to be regarded as a greedy, cruel, and vengeful woman, and was nicknamed "King Maegor with tits" by the common people of King's Landing. "Maegor's tits" was a common curse among the inhabitants of the capital for a hundred years afterward. In 232 AC, a son was born to Prince Aerion Targaryen and his wife Daenora Targaryen, and Aerion gave him the ominous name Maegor.

Balerion, called the Black Dread, was a dragon of House Targaryen. He was ridden by King Aegon I Targaryen during the War of Conquest, alongside his sister-wives Visenya, on Vhagar, and Rhaenys, on Meraxes. Balerion was also ridden by Kings Maegor I and Viserys I, and briefly by Princess Aerea Targaryen. His fire was black, sometimes swirling with red. When he was at the height of his power, his flames could melt steel and stone, and fuse sand into glass. Balerion was the largest of all the Targaryen dragons since Aegon's Conquest. His wingspan was so great that his shadow could swallow entire cities as he passed overhead. His teeth were as long as swords, and his jaws were large enough to swallow an aurochs whole, or even one of the woolly mammoths said to roam the cold wastes beyond the Port of Ibben. By 93 AC, Balerion seemed to have finally stopped growing. He had grown slow and heavy, and was difficult to wake. When Prince Viserys Targaryen claimed the dragon that year, the dragon struggled to fly. Prince Viserys believed that the dragon no longer had the strength to fly from King's Landing to Dragonstone. Balerion was headstrong and instilled much fear. He died at over 200 years of age, being the last creature to have seen Valyria in its splendor.

Maegor was a tall, sturdy, and fearsomely strong man, larger than his father, King Aegon I Targaryen. He was bull-like in appearance, with broad shoulders, a thick neck, and massive arms. Although he was large, he was not fat, but rather stocky and square. He kept his hair short and his beard trimmed to his jaw. His hair was a golden platinum. He had dark violet eyes, angry and suspicious, and a grim mouth. Maegor was a born warrior, whose skill at arms was unmatched. He lived for war, tourneys, and battle, and became one of the most skilled young knights of his time. Yet he was also a hard and brutal man, who craved violence, death, and absolute dominion over all that he considered his. His savagery on the battlefield and his severity toward defeated enemies were often commented on. Maegor was quarrelsome, quick to take offense, slow to forgive, and fearsome in his anger. He was a hard, unyielding, and uncompromising man. He preferred fire and steel to settling matters through argument, and he displayed cruel tendencies from an early age. Though he had many companions in his youth, he had no true friends, and even as an adult, Maegor trusted no one. Maegor wore his father's crown of Valyrian steel and rubies. His armor, however, was more elaborate than Aegon's. Instead of a coat of scales, Maegor wore a breastplate, covered by a surcoat bearing the three-headed dragon of the Targaryens, red on black.
