General view

Creation and concept:

Jiren was one of the first three Tournament of Power entrants designed by Akira Toriyama. The Toei team planned to make the character more outgoing, but Toriyama suggested that Jiren be someone who didn't talk much. The personality that was initially suggested for him was transferred to Toppo.

Etymology:

Its name is the result of reversing the order of the syllables of the term range (レンジ, Renji¿?), an Anglo-Saxon word meaning "stove", a common kitchen instrument.

Appearance

He is a fairly tall and muscular individual, though not as tall as Toppo. He has grey skin, with glowing black, insect-like eyes. His facial appearance is similar to that of the Arbiter, with round ear pieces similar to Frieza's in his original form. He wears the Pride Troopers uniform, a red and black spandex-like uniform with white gloves and boots. Jiren is known to have didactyl feet, meaning that both of them only have two toes.

As a child he wore an orange cape that covered him up to his head. While as a young man he used a blue dogi similar to the one Goku wore in the Pilaf Arc along with a green hat.

Personality

Like several characters in Dragon Ball Super, Jiren's personality is different between the anime and manga, with subtle differences.

Jiren is a lone warrior, with a pure drive to be the strongest. This desire was born when an evildoer cruelly murdered his parents, so Jiren dedicated himself to becoming strong in order to avenge them, but many years later this same evildoer killed his teacher and companions. This defeat, plus the cowardice of the people he trusted to avenge the deaths of the fallen, caused him to believe in the mentality of the strongest and reject camaraderie and teamwork, placing his faith solely in his own power. [3][4]

This mentality caused Jiren to become a rude, cold and few-worded person, unable to escape his past, to connect and empathize with people. [5] [6] He only feels interest in power, and to search for something beyond power as such. [7] However, deep inside himself, he has the human feeling of using the Super Dragon Balls to obtain a wish that redeems his past. [8]

Due to his enormous power, Jiren is prideful, respecting very few warriors. He prefers to have his opponents use their full power so he can humiliate them.[9] During their fight, he acknowledges Vegeta's pride and strength, despite considering the prince a nuisance; although Hit put up a fight, he considered it absurd for an assassin like him to have any concept of honor.[10]

Motivated only by his desire, Jiren entered the Tournament of Power, but he showed little interest in the participants. Proud, he decided to only face exceptional enemies. When he decided to intervene, as if to save his teammates from other adversaries, Jiren preferred to end the fight with a single attack. Only Son Goku managed to arouse his interest.

During his fight with Son Goku, Jiren became curious about the Saiyan, allowing him to utilize his full power.[9] Jiren even acknowledged the Saiyan race as interesting, but lacking the ability to defeat him.[11] Jiren's curiosity was due to Son Goku's interest in becoming stronger, which resonated with Jiren. Despite many battles, Jiren did not acknowledge Goku as a worthy rival until the latter awakened the Egoistic Doctrine.[12]

Cornered, Jiren felt contempt for Son Goku for contradicting his faith that made him who he is, as Goku believed that the power of the Egoistic Doctrine was obtained thanks to his trust in his friends and family. This awakened his hidden power, and he even attempted to take the lives of the Saiyan's companions to make him understand the misery he went through, causing Goku to defeat him. Humiliated, he asked Goku to take him out of the arena, but the Saiyan loses the Egoistic Doctrine. Jiren decides to take him out of the arena, not without feeling melancholy for the unfair way in which the fight ended, assuring Goku that he would remember him as a proud warrior. [13]

Feeling empty and tired, Jiren is defeated by Frieza and Android 17. Despite declaring that he has no comrades, a few words of confidence from his partner Toppo motivate Jiren to continue fighting. This would be the first time that Jiren arouses an emotional bond with someone else, in order to help protect his universe. Seeing Son Goku awaken and continue fighting made Jiren feel joy, as his fight would not be left inconclusive, although he would be defeated by "Universe 7's confidence" in an ironic team-up between Goku and Frieza, who are arch-enemies. [4]

In the end, Jiren appreciates Son Goku as an exceptional warrior and vows to fight him again someday in the future.[4]

Jiren is a quiet, solitary, respectful, and devoted warrior of justice, incapable of acting selfishly. His sense of morality is so high that he is incapable of taking the life of another individual, and thus, he refused to participate in the Tournament of Power, as it would involve the destruction of other universes. This morality is the reason why he refused to be a God of Destruction. [15] However, deep within, Jiren has an extremely selfish desire that causes him to change his attitude: to revive his master, gain his approval as his successor, [14] and cleanse his feelings of guilt for his death. [16]

Jiren greatly respects his late master, but misunderstood his teachings, caring more about strengthening his physical strength to become the perfect force for justice, rather than learning what his master wanted: for him to rely on others. He honors his master by fighting with all his power, avoiding committing unnecessary actions,[17] and, to his credit, considers dirty attacks to be cheating, saying that "it is not true strength."[18]

Jiren is confident, knowing that his level of fighting puts him on a level beyond others. Being motivated by his desire, Jiren becomes apathetic, interested only in his goal. Although he was able to help his comrades during the tournament on several occasions, he preferred to let them lose, as he knew that no one could defeat him. [19][14] This selfish attitude was always a weakness for the warrior, so his master Gitchen had him work with the Pride Troopers to learn about teamwork. [20] Jiren only acknowledges his mistake by losing the tournament, where he apologizes to his comrades. [14]

Skills

According to Vermoudh, his fighting style is based mostly on getting people to come to him to fight rather than going at them on his own. Jiren is capable of moving at fairly high speeds, being able to position himself behind someone in less than a second without them realizing it. He was also able to make the pieces of the Gods of Destruction's Kachi Kacchin Steel not hit him.

Jiren is able to analyze his opponent's movements in perfect detail, and has the ability to fight his opponents with his eyes and counter a Spirit Bomb with his eyes without using his full strength. Jiren's strength transcends time itself, being able to break through time prisons. In the manga, it is established that, like individuals such as Freeza and Hit, Jiren possesses the ability to survive in the vast vacuum of space, being able to fly between planets without any type of ship.

Can

According to Toppo himself, Jiren is the most powerful member of the Pride Troopers, being stronger than the leader himself, a candidate for God of Destruction, making him one of the most powerful fighters in Universe 11. During his arrival at the Tournament of Power, the warriors of Universe 7, as well as Cabba, were shocked to feel the enormous pressure emanating from the bodies of the members of Team Universe 11, especially Jiren.

He was able to defeat Kale (Ravager) with a single blow when she was distracted destroying everything in her path. As if that were not enough, in episode 107 he defeats Maji-Kayo with only the force of a single punch that sends him flying.

In his fight against Goku, he is shown to far surpass all of Goku's pre-Super Saiyan Blue forms (base form, Super Saiyan 1st Grade, Super Saiyan 2, and Super Saiyan God), stopping all of Goku's attacks without moving and requiring only one finger to defend himself against Goku in Super Saiyan God. As a Super Saiyan Blue using the 20x Kaio-ken, he briefly manages to fight Jiren off, but is outmatched and defeated after exchanging a few blows. The Saiyan soon recovers and lunges at Jiren, but Jiren stops him seemingly just by looking at him. As Whis explains, Goku was already using the 20x Kaio-ken, being unable to harm Jiren. Vermoudh states that no one person can defeat him. In fact, despite Goku occasionally using the Kaio-ken alongside Super Saiyan Blue, Jiren easily counters it, before finally grabbing him and sending him flying. Also in the same fight, Goku transforms into Super Saiyan Blue and then uses the Kaio-Ken x20 in an effort to push the Super Spirit Bomb away, but Jiren remains completely standing. Despite Goku's attempts, Jiren manages to push the Spirit Bomb back towards him.

In his fight against Hit, he was seen to be constantly at an advantage against him, managing to predict his movements and escaping his time cage solely with his power. A single Power Impact from Hit was enough to defeat him, it is implied by Vados that Jiren's power surpasses time itself and it is known that at that moment he was containing most of his power, which in itself made the entire Realm of Nothingness, an endless empty dimension, tremble in the physical sense.

During the Universal War Arc, Jiren was shown to be able to fight on par with Cumber and even outmatch him, albeit for a short period of time, while also showing that his power made him immune to the Evil Saiyan's ki corruption. He was also able to fight evenly with Super Oran and take a direct hit from both his and Kamin's energy blasts without even receiving a scratch. In his fight against Pothala Zamasu, he was able to dodge his blows and easily counterattack the opposing fused being with his own, managing to overpower him. [1]

Jiren is stated to be the most powerful warrior in Universe 11 and one of the most powerful humans/mortals in existence, with his powers and abilities being superior and greater than that of the Gods of Destruction, which he himself is proud of. [2] His incredible strength as a mortal surpassing the gods themselves has led to him having legendary status in Universe 11, while in other universes his existence was believed to be a myth, until the Gods of Destruction, Kaio-shin, and their guide angels witnessed him in the Tournament of Power. He is even stronger than Universe 11's God of Destruction, Vermoudh in terms of power. [3]

In turn, Jiren was at one time the most powerful opponent that has existed in the history of the Dragon Ball franchise[4] until the arrival of Broly, so he is currently the second most powerful adversary/antagonist of Son Goku[5].

Transformations/Power Increases

Ultimate Power: Ultimate Power (フルパワー, Furu Pawā[6]?) is used by Jiren when he unleashes all of the power contained within him. This massive power is represented by a double fiery red aura, with which he was able to restrain Goku using Super Saiyan Blue with the Kaio-ken x20, Vegeta using Super Saiyan God Evolved Super Saiyan at the same time, Freeza using his True Golden Freeza state already Number 17. Despite this force being incredibly gigantic, it was no match for Goku who would later use the Supreme Egoistic Doctrine.

Ultimate Warrior Heat: In his fight against Goku, who at the time used the Ultimate Egoistic Doctrine, Jiren would remember the traumas and bad memories of his dark past, this caused him to experience a massive increase in strength, which took him beyond his previously known limits and being able to match Goku for less than a minute without completely surpassing him. This state of strength in Jiren's body is represented with a considerable increase in musculature, accompanied by an intense red heat aura similar to that possessed by the Egoistic Doctrine transformations. This heat is so strong that it is felt from the stands of the Survival Place and burns the top of Jiren's Pride Soldier uniform.

By receiving Toppo's unconditional emotional support before the end of the Tournament of Power, Jiren managed to overcome some of the traumas of his past and his emotional barrier, which less than a minute ago caused him to surpass his own limits. As a result, Jiren managed to recover the hidden power that he previously used in his fight against Goku free of emotional anxiety, however, Jiren by that time was already too exhausted and was defeated by the team-up strategy between Freeza and Goku, who with the last reserves of their power managed to overcome him.
