quirk

A Quirk (個こ性せい, Kosei?, lit. "Individuality"), formerly known as a Meta Ability (異い能のう, Inō?, lit. "Extraordinary Ability"), is a superhuman ability that a person can possess.

Along with being unique to each user, Quirks are sorted into multiple categories. Quirk users are also limited to only developing one ability and are thus unable to achieve any other through natural means.

quirk history

Luminescent Baby (Anime) The first recognized Quirk. The earliest known instance of a human having superpowers was a female sex worker, who would later become the mother of twin boys, All For One and Yoichi Shigaraki. Her Quirk was Spearlike Bones, but it only manifested as hardened growths on her left arm. She died during childbirth by a riverbank, her life force sucked away by a fetal All For One, without ever truly knowing about her ability.[1] A year after her sons were born, the first superpower ever to be officially recorded was manifested by a newborn baby in Qing Qing City, China with the ability to radiate light from its body. After this phenomenon, many people around the world began to manifest different kinds of superpowers,[2] and not just at birth, some people showed signs of powers in puberty. These powers became known as "Meta Abilities".

quirk history

Age of Chaos The advent of the Quirks led society into chaos. While the cause of this phenomenon is unknown, one research group looking into the matter hypothesized that it was caused by the spread of a previously unknown novel disease carried by mice, while others theorized that it was actually a natural evolution of the human race, however, to date, there is no hard evidence to support any of these theories.[3] The aforementioned research group announced to the public that those with Meta Abilities were a subbranch of humanity with new genetic factors.

quirk history

Dawn of Vigilantes The era of Vigilantes. The dawn of this extraordinary era was marred by a breakdown of society caused by the sudden onslaught of criminals empowered by their newfound "superpowers" and ordinary people being prejudiced against the new minority. The announcement by the researchers proved to be reckless and premature as the statement divided people, and caused chaos to grow. As a result, Anti-Meta groups rose up with the objective of exterminating those with abilities.

quirk history

The Luminescent Baby took advantage of their fame as the first recorded Quirk user, attempting to rally a following that preached a return to a peaceful and stable society. They had 10 million followers at one point, but was later murdered out of jealousy for all the attention and admiration they were getting by a powerful supervillain who would later be known as All For One.[1]

All For One gathers followers All For One becomes a symbol of unity, gathering followers. As chaos and unrest ensued due to the outbreak of Meta Abilities, ordinary civilians decided to take matters into their own hands to bring order to society, and thus the first "Heroes" appeared in the form of Vigilantes, beginning the Vigilantes Era.[4]

quirk history

During this time period, All For One became a symbol of unity in society. He used his own Meta Ability to remove Meta Abilities from those who did not want them and give them to those that did. His actions under the guise of returning society to its prior state of humanity, when in reality, he was gathering followers who were loyal to him, allowing him to act out his ulterior motives.[5]

The Mother of Quirks A mother's unconditional love led to the birth of the term "Quirk". At some point, a woman gave birth to a son named Chikara Yotsubashi. As Chikara grew up, he faced a lot of discrimination and abuse for having a Meta Ability. His mother supported him, stating that her son's Meta Ability is "just a Quirk of his". Although at the time, her message was scorned and even led to her murder, decades later, "Quirk" became the most common term for such Meta Abilities, and she retroactively became known as The Mother of Quirks.[6]

quirk history

As society adapted to the new status quo, the Police Force moved to prioritize leadership and to maintain the status quo, and as such, decided not to use Quirks as weapons. To fill that void, the profession of crime-fighting Quirk users, Pro Heroes, began to exist, starting in Rhode Island, USA, which caused the Vigilantes to slowly disappear. Authorizing the use of powers that could so easily kill, however, was a greatly criticized decision at first, but eventually became accepted as a legitimate occupation. This became known as the "Advent of the Extraordinary".[7]

quirk history

Destro preaching Destro preaching that Quirks should be used freely. With the proliferation of Quirks, the government began to regulate their use. A group of Quirk users known as the Meta Liberation Army, led by Chikara under the alias, Destro, had tried to stop the passing of regulations that would restrict Quirk usage, believing that free use of Quirks is a basic human right. They rebelled against the governments of a number of nations for several years before meeting their defeat. Chikara himself was imprisoned and wrote a biographical book, Meta Liberation War, detailing his ideals over liberating Quirks. After getting his writing published, Chikara committed suicide, but his legacy would continue over the years with members and supporters of the Meta Liberation Army operating from the shadows.[8]

Currently, roughly 80% of the people who make up the global population possess a Quirk, and that percentage continues to increase.[2] According to Yoichi Shigaraki, the number of individuals without a Quirk has been rapidly declining in population, indicating that now less than 20% of the world's population is Quirkless (無個性, Mu Kosei?, lit. "No Individuality").

hero's

Hero (Heroes (ヒーロー, Hīrō?) are individuals who are licensed to use their Quirks to protect civilians from Villains, natural disasters, and/or any other kind of harm.

Those who take heroism as a profession are referred to as Pro Heroes (プロヒーロー, Puro Hīrō?). Overall Hero activity across the globe is managed by the World Heroes Association.

In the aftermath of the Paranormal Liberation War, many Pro Heroes have retired due to excessive criticism from the public, causing the number of Heroes in Japan to decrease.

appearance

Shota is a slender and tall, pale-skinned man with messy, shoulder-length black hair that partially hangs in front of his face and half-opened black eyes. He is usually recognized for his worn-out appearance,[2][3] often looking fatigued. His facial hair is almost always in a stubbly, unkempt state (unless he needs to look good for the press), and his eyes tired and flat unless he's in combat.

appearance

Before starting his teaching career, Shota's goggles were of a silver-like color, and he had a smaller utility belt.

During his second and third years of high school at U.A., Shota's hero outfit was a separate black jacket and pants, as opposed to his current outfit, which looks more like a unitard. He also sported a pair of fingerless gloves. In his second year, Shota added goggles to his costume. His goggles in his third year resemble more closely the ones he wears today.

appearance

After being heavily injured by Nomu, Shota's entire face and both of his arms were completely covered in bandages.[5] Once these bandages were removed, Shota reveals a deep scar underneath his right eye.[6]

His formal attire for press meetings and meetings with parents of his students includes a black suit, blue tie, and white dress shirt. While in this attire, his hair is well-groomed and held back in a low bun at the base of his neck.

appearence

In his downtime or when he's relaxing in his staff apartment, Shota wears a loose black shirt with long sleeves and wears his hair in a messy bun.

U.A. High School

U.A. High School (雄ゆう英えい高こう校こう, Yūei Kōkō?) is an academy that boasts the best heroics education in Japan. It sits atop a forested hill that overlooks Musutafu.

It is one of the primary settings in which the story takes place.

Overview U.A. is the #1 ranked high school for heroics and is considered as the top Hero Academy in Japan. Students are separated based on their abilities into specific Departments and Classes - A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, and K.

As stated by Shota Aizawa, U.A. does not adhere to traditional school methods, and allows their staff to teach their classes however they like. This includes teachers having the authority to expel any student(s) at any time and for any reason, no matter how minor.[1] Furthermore, students who are expelled can be re-enrolled, although the expulsion will still remain on their permanent records.[2]

U.A. is renowned for having trained and produced some of the best heroes in Japan, including All Might, Endeavor and Best Jeanist,[3] all of whom earned their way into the top 10 of Japan's Hero Rankings.

Once a year, U.A. holds a tournament called the U.A. Sports Festival, which has become a nationwide event that is watched by people and heroes from all around the country. Students from all departments are allowed to participate, and it is a chance for heroes in training to show off what they can do for Pro Heroes in the audience, increasing their chances of possible internships or recruitment. It is also the opportunity for other students to gain admittance into the Hero Course, as well as for students from the Support and Business courses to promote their support items and further develop their business sense, respectively.

U.A high school

U.A. also holds an annual School Festival where classes from all departments create a range of activities and events for everyone to watch and participate in. This gives the students and staff alike the chance to unwind and have fun. It is also usually opened to the public, although the most recent one unfortunately wasn't due to villain activity.

Like many schools, each class in U.A. has a class representative and vice class representative. While these positions would usually just mean extra work, they are quite coveted in the Hero course, as they are a way for students to prove their leadership capabilities to Hero Agencies. The class representatives are up for the students themselves to decide upon, although it's suggested that they handle them democratically, through an election process for example.[4]

U.A. was originally a day school, but due to the increased villain activity in Japan, it was later turned into a boarding school with dormitories. Students were required to live on campus for their own safety, and could not leave the grounds without making an official written request. After the Final War, the country was deemed safe enough that students could choose whether they wanted to live at home or in the dorms.[5]

U.A. executes a six-day school week where the only day off is Sunday.[6]

U.A high school security

At the entrance, there is a security wall nicknamed the "U.A. Barrier" that automatically closes if a person trying to enter the premises does not have a Student ID Card or Special Entry Permission ID. Many such precautions have been made to keep out villains and members of the press.

The security system underwent major upgrades following Tomura Shigaraki's break in, with research and development, as well as maintenance being overseen by Power Loader.[7] The grounds are partitioned like a game board, and each section is equipped with a mechanism that will transform it into an underground emergency shelter. Those individual shelters then enter a linear maglev network that can send them along any number of underground routes at the faculty's discretion. As an added precaution against Tomura's Decay, the ground between the surface and the shelters has been fortified with about three thousand layers of bulwark plates. Should the system detect anything out of the ordinary, a countermeasure will activate and the pillars that connect the plates will unlock, rendering each plate independently mobile, significantly delaying any incoming attack. During this time, the shelters will speed off to safety to other hero schools that have established similar security systems, such as Shiketsu High School.[8]

U.A highschool security

Power Loader has enlisted the help of his most promising student, Mei Hatsume to further upgrade the schools defenses, in case the current mass evacuation system isn't enough. Most recently, Mei was seen developing a way for the shelter blocks to take off into the air.[7]

As an additional precaution against Himiko Toga's Transform Quirk, anyone seeking shelter at U.A. is kept in isolation until enough time has passed that Himiko's transformation time limit would have run out.

The U.A. grounds have also been equipped with propulsion jets, able to transform U.A. into a floating fortress.[9] In preparation for the final battle with Tomura Shigaraki, special measures were put in place to counter his abilities. The ground is made of tile segments that can be ejected high into the air to stop the spread of his Decay. The tile segments can be replaced as they go. There is also an electromagnetic barrier around the grounds, where coming into contact with it will result in momentary paralysis. The whole thing is powered by several students with electrical Quirks.[10]
