Fang Yuan

Fang Yuan (古月方源, Gu Yue Fang Yuan, lit. Ancient Moon Fang Yuan) is the protagonist of Reverend Insanity. Formerly a Scholar from Earth, he mysteriously transmigrated into the Gu World where he lived his first life for 500 years. He started as a common clan member before growing into a Gu Immortal and Sect Master of the Demonic Path. At the very end of this 500 Year Life, Fang Yuan was cornered by his foes and forced to use the power of his newly refined Spring Autumn Cicada to travel back in time to the days of his youth.

In the Five Regions And Two Heavens, Fang Yuan became infamous for being one of the strongest demonic overlords of his time. He is someone who wreaks havoc wherever he goes in constant pursuit of Eternal Life, scheming and fighting against far more powerful enemies and ancient organizations.

Fang Yuan's current personality developed over the course of 500 years of his first life in the Gu World, as he lived among ordinary mortals, Gu Masters and Gu Immortals, which gave him deep wisdom and understanding on the various aspects of life. He has a complex personality with a breadth and depth of opinions as well as a mindset vastly different from his peers.

He is a man of endless focus and perseverance. Despite being more powerful than his enemies many times, he never underestimates them and remains eternally vigilant when it comes to planning and executing his schemes, always calculating his chances realistically, expecting failures to happen and making contingencies for those possible failures. Fang Yuan truly only counts on himself and never fully relies on others when it matters, as he sees only his own strength as the greatest and most reliable assurance. He is a true demonic cultivator without moral restraints and his actions reflect that of a true opportunist, therefore, he is able to betray and sacrifice anyone at will, regardless of their supposed relationship, as long as this action benefits him and yields a greater gain. Compared to others influenced by compassion to not take action against weaker opponents, Fang Yuan is more than willing to take them on, only if the enemy is beyond Fang Yuan's strength or ability would he mindfully retreats; which can be summed up with one of his mottos: 'Bully the weak and fear the strong'. To Fang Yuan, coldness, arrogance, humility, conceit, all of these are masks, they are tools for him to obtain profits. But because of this trait, he also causes many to distrust and be wary of him.

Reverend insanity (Gu Zhen Ren)

While Fang Yuan seems to be cold and emotionless, he in fact does feel emotion. However his past experiences and the harshness of Gu World have made him very cynical and hardened. In this regard he is more akin to a high functioning sociopath and can rationalize away most of his harsh actions as being pragmatic but unlike a psychopath that feels almost no emotion, there are things that can move or stir up his feelings. For instance, using rules and strategy against his opponents is his preference however he rarely takes a more direct method of handling his enemies proving he has something of an ego and pride. While he deftly countered his uncles schemes he had enough knowledge and ability that simply killing his uncle while making it look accidental was possible which would have made things easier for him as his aunt was not nearly as clever nor a real threat. Further, he intentionally went out of his way to kill his aunt and uncle later when there was no practical reason and enjoyed it meaning he still held some resentment towards them. Fang Yuan shows most of his brilliance in scheming against his enemies by using tactics instead of brute strength and is proficient at finding out his enemy's weak points and making use of it to its fullest potential. After experiencing many things in his 500 years of life, he came to the conclusion that everything was worthless in front of eternal life. Unlike others who are consumed with fame, glory, beauty, repute, worldly riches, and (intimate) relationships, Fang Yuan has abandoned those ephemeral pursuits in favor of gaining immortality— even if it means dying.

While utterly merciless to opponents or people he sacrifices for his goals and ambitions, in daily life, Fang Yuan is reserved and polite. As he doesn't care about face or status and is indifferent to the opinions of others towards him, he generally treats the random people he might meet in his travels politely as if they were friends. Further, he never takes things personally and has no issues forgiving minor slights or mistakes, particularly if the other party bears him no ill-will. He once stopped a mortal father from severely beating his daughter (as he was afraid for her safety and believed a Gu master would severely injure or kill her if she were not punished) for bumping into Fang Yuan (who had high status as a Gu Master) and Fang Yuan told her it was a small matter and he didn't mind. Fang Yuan's character has deep similarities to the concept of the 'Machiavellian' who is a person so focused on their own interests they will manipulate, deceive, and exploit others to achieve their goals. He cares about nothing but his own interests. To him there are no permanent allies nor permanent enemies. There are only permanent benefits. Even in the face of total failure he stands unfazed and calm. Even having a smile as he dies, because he lived true to himself even as a true demon. He is neutral towards the world and life itself, doing whatever necessary for his single wish. Only when following rules that benefit him will he then abides. If disregarding the rules will benefits him he does so without hesitation. Fang yuan does a cost-benefit analysis every time he makes a decision, he'll do "righteous" things if they benefit him more and "evil" things if they benefit him more. He feels absolutely no sense of obligation to allies or people who help him.

Growing up in the Gu Yue Clan, Fang Yuan was highly praised for his early intelligence and was considered as a genius of the younger generation. He was able to start talking after only three months, able to walk after four and at five years of age, he was able to recite poetry. Those talents are the result of a transmigrated, mature, and intelligent soul that carried its experiences over. Some of the poetry he recited were Earth’s popular ancient poems.

Unfortunately for him, at the annual awakening ceremony, he was only found to have C grade aptitude while his little brother Fang Zheng had an A grade aptitude. With this, he was immediately judged as worthless and trash in regards to his future cultivation prospects and as a result, the people of the clan ostracized him and treated him like scum. During this time he greatly suffered in the clan until finally deciding on leaving with a traveling caravan.

In the years to come, he experienced all that life had to offer, from friendship, kinship, and love to hatred, sadness, and poverty. He traveled all of the five regions, amassing experiences in different aspects such as life experience, places, and people over the course of his time until chancing upon one of the thousands of inheritances of Blood Sea Ancestor (over 300 years after his transmigration). From the inheritance, he gained Bladewing Blood Bat Gu, a normal Blood Sea Ancestor's inheritance, and through it, he became a blood path cultivator. He later managed to advance to become a blood path Gu Immortal.

During this time, he founded the Blood Wing Demon Sect, a demonic sect consisting of mortals with him as the sole Gu Immortal. His goal to refine a blood path Immortal Gu were futile until he miraculously managed to get his hands on a complete recipe for one of the top Ten Mysterious Gu— Spring Autumn Cicada a time path Immortal Gu with the ability to carry the will and memories of its user to a previous point in time.

After using Spring Autumn Cicada to return to Gu Yue Village 500 years into the past, Fang Yuan used the knowledge of his previous life to grasp opportunities and chances to once again become a ruthless demon. While he was silently changing the course of his fate, he discovered many things and secrets he never expected, including someone that is quite similar to his own nature.

After escaping from Qing Mao Mountain and avoiding the pursuit of the Tie Clan, Fang Yuan's journey took him to Bai Gu Mountain where he wreaked havoc and fled to the Shang Clan City. By escorting Shang Clan city lord's daughter, Shang Xin Ci, to safety, Fang Yuan and Bai Ning Bing managed to acquire a foundation and ample resources from the city with ease due to a token given by the city lord. After finishing their business, they left for San Cha Mountain, to participate in the Three Kings Inheritance.

Although Fang Yuan managed to escape San Cha Mountain and snatch Hu Immortal Blessed Land from the Central Continent's Ten Great Ancient Sects, due to the earthly calamity the blessed land recently experienced, Dang Hun Mountain was in danger of collapsing. After meticulous planning, he decided to travel to Northern Plains in order to obtain the Immortal Gu Landscape as Before from a soon-to-be Gu Immortal, Tai Bai Yun Sheng. To avoid unnecessary trouble, Fang Yuan visited a certain place in order to disguise himself as a Northern Plains native.

After the events in the Imperial Court Blessed Land and its destruction, Fang Yuan managed to escape back to Hu Immortal Blessed Land. Although he managed to acquire one of Eighty-Eight True Yang Building's true inheritances, in order to preserve his life, he turned himself into a zombie, causing his cultivation progress to stagnate. Now, Fang Yuan must find a way to get rid of his zombie status, regaining a living human body, while avoiding the search of Northern Plain's Gu Masters and dealing with Immortal Crane Sect's plan to attack and recapture Hu Immortal Blessed Land. He then invented the Airsac Gu with the help of the Strength Qi Immortal Gu by the illumination of the Wisdom Gu he brought from the Northern Plains, which can pack Guts Gus, and made a deal with the Immortal Crane Sect to avoid a battle.

Not long after, he went to the Starry Sky Grotto Heaven with Hei Lou Lan. There, they encountered the Dream World for the first time. They also gained a lot of desolate beasts corpses to sell and give to Lang Ya spirit land. Shortly after, he went to the Northern Plain to join the Northern Plain Zombie Alliance, trying to gain information on how to transform back (reborn) into a human. He also gained the Unfamiliar Face killer move from Lang Ya spirit land, in order to join the big auction in the blessed land of Qin Bai Sheng that was going to happen, and did Lang Ya spirit land the favor of selling the blessed lands of the invader of Lang Ya blessing land.

Volume 4 ended with the battle of Yi Tian Mountain, having many Gu masters and immortals died trying to get a Gu House, but actually is also an attempt of Spectral Soul Demon Venerable to revive by using the Immortal Fetus Gu, which is finally taken by Fang Yuan. Fang Yuan was able to achieve this because he was used as a pawn by the Heaven's Will, having used the Spring Autumn Cicada again to gain the dream realm inheritance of Star Constellation Immortal Venerable whose will had actually assimilated.

The war on Yi Tian Mountain is over. Countless Gu Immortals are dead, Heavenly Court retreated, Spectral Soul is trapped, while Fang Yuan managed to come out on top. However, due to the intervention of Heaven's Will, Fang Yuan was now stranded in Southern Border with no means of transportation and was left with only a few of his Gu Worms. With his secrets exposed, his only option was to go to Lang Ya Blessed Land in Northern Plains. Meanwhile, Ying Wu Xie, having possessed Fang Yuan's body, is forced to bear the brunt of Fang Yuan's past actions.

Fang Yuan went back to Lang Ya Sect and cultivated, and managed his immortal aperture. He also took the time path inheritance in Hei Fan Grotto Heaven and obtained many Gu Immortals who were guarding it by deceiving them.

Not long after, he went to Southern Border to take part in the dream path exploration by killing Wu Yi Hai and used the Familiar Face to become him, being the brother of the leader of Wu Clan, the greatest righteous force in Southern Border. After having his attainments upgraded, he then created various killer moves, and chased Ying Wu Xie to the Eastern Sea and to Northern Plain, not realizing he was involved with the conflict between the Shadow Sect, the Demonic Gu Immortals in Xue Hu Mountain, Longevity heaven, and Zhao Lian Yun and the Heavenly Court backing her. The battle ended with Fang Yuan obtaining the Reverse Flow River and Perseverance Gu, and with the water grandmaster attainment, he created Myriad Self - Second Style - Reverse Flow Protection Seal to flee.

After returning to the Southern Border, he did several missions and obtained some trust from 'his brother' Wu Yong and was stationed back near the Dream Field. Not long after, Shadow Sect attacked the Gu formation surrounding the Dream Field, and was ambushed by the Heavenly Court. The battle ended, and Purple died, giving Fang Yuan the authority of being the leader of Shadow Sect and all his memories and resources. Duke Long of Heavenly Court caught the Soul of Spectral Soul. Fang Yuan used the heavenly crystals to feed his bird to become a memorial desolate beast, and fled the scene with Hei Lou Lan, Bai Ning Bing, Lady White Rabbit, Fairy Miao Yin, Ying Wu Xie, and the rest of the failed Pure Dream Reality Seeker Physique products.

After annexing Lang Ya Blessed Land, Fang Yuan returns to Rank 8.

As of now, Fang Yuan's only remaining family member is his younger twin brother Fang Zheng whom he previously manipulated through the use of his will (with the intent of creating a blood deity out of him at a later time). However, he got captured and brought along to Heavenly Court by Feng Jiu Ge. Fang Yuan rebirthed for a total of 5 times(currently). After the desperate battle with the Gu Immortals from the Ten Great Ancient Sects who were after the Spring Autumn Cicada in his first life.[27] After First Gen Gu Yue and Lord Sky Crane tried both to kill him.[28] After being betrayed by Bai Ning Bing and getting cornered by her and Tie Ruo Nan.[29] Right before being killed by the attack from Heavenly Court with the Heaven Overseeing Tower.[30] After being killed by Duke Long in the battle outside Infallible Blessed Land, Fang Yuan's Time Path Clone used Spring Autumn Cicada to rebirth.[31] Despite his true identity as "Fang Yuan" being revealed, Chu Du and the Three Crazed Demon Eccentrics are still willing to collaborate with him as well as even loaning hundreds of thousands immortal essence stones.[32] Miao Ming Shen also showed great mental fortitude by doing the same. His Blood Path Grandmaster attainment in his previous life was a trap set by Heaven's Will: if he cultivated Blood Path in his current life his location could be found by the Demon Judgment Board.[34] Fang Yuan is the first person throughout history that could combine enslavement path and strenght path via his immortal killer move Myriad Self. An accomplishment on par with Feng Jiu Ge controlling the winds of assimilation. Another unprecedented accomplishment is the successful fusion of an ancient battle formation, Twelve Zodiac Battle Formation and a inmortal gu house, Myriad Year Flying Warship.

Even though Fang Yuan was an otherworldly demon, he had lived and struggled in this world for so long, he had already assimilated into it. Should one day he failed and die, having no hope left at all, he would leave his inheritance behind like anyone in the Gu World encouraging his inheritor to pursue eternal life as well. Technically Speaking Fang Yuan had left at least two inheritances The first one was "Suan Bu Jin Inheritance", which contain wisdom path methods and immortal gu he used as Suan Bu Jin of Western Desert, to Fang Yun, under the name of Fang Di Chang.[36] The second one was an immortal formation, along with his will and immortal essence, which he gave to Xia Lin.[37] One of the most extraordinary phenomenon he witnessed in Gu Cultivation World was the dao marks wave in Seventh Layer of Crazed Demon Cave. If he had to pass his inheritance in the near future, he would record the scene and pass it to the later Even though Heavenly Court and Longevity Heaven planned to obtain Destiny Gu Fang Yuan alone took a big step in this direction by studying the effect of his rebirths and so, Fate. His luck was connected in an inexplainable way with Fang Zheng, being always countered by Fang Zheng's luck. After engineering the death of Spectral Soul Demon Venerable, Fang Yuan rose to first position on the Demon Judgment Board.

If the Spring and Autumn Cicada that I have just cultivated is effective, I shall still be a demon in my next life!
