• Weight: 53.4 kilos Shikamaru is mainly characterized by having a lazy and tired expression, he has long black hair tied in a pointed ponytail similar to Iruka's, brown eyes and two ears adorned with earrings, which were given to him and the other members of Team Asuma by his teacher Asuma.

As for his attire, he, among the members of the Konoha 11, bears the most resemblance to a standard Leaf ninja, as in addition to retaining his tactical vest, he also began wearing a black long-sleeved shirt with a matching pair of pants and sandals, and his wrists and ankles are lined with leggings. His sash is in the same place, but is apparently sewn into his shirt due to its metal part only being visible. He is also equipped with a Tanto on the back of his vest via a brown strap. Another thing that changed was the design of his earrings from rings to post-type earrings.

Shikamaru was the kind of boy who didn't like to get excited and only liked to watch the clouds and even envied them for how free they were. He preferred not to get involved in "troublesome" or "annoying" activities so as to avoid responsibility. He also doesn't like fighting because he considers it, as he does most things, to be "troublesome". He is fully aware of this aspect of his personality, even naming himself "No. 1 at running away" or "No. 1 coward". In fact, his most used phrase is "troublesome" (面倒くさい（めんどうくさい, Mendokusai）in the Japanese version, and "how boring" and/or "what a pain" in the American and Latin versions. However, when duty calls, Shikamaru shows strong morals and a sense of commitment to his companions and friends. As he grows older and after Asuma's death, he changes quite a bit.

Although, according to his own words, he lacks courage, but in reality he is one to sacrifice himself and face almost certain death for the sake of his friends and/or comrades without a second thought. Due to his raw leadership ability, he was the first of the Konoha 12 to become a Chūnin. The weight of the decisions he must make as a Chūnin and thus team leader have caused Shikamaru to mature rapidly. This was most evident after Asuma's death. He vowed to protect the children and legacy of his teacher Asuma, so that he could become a "cool kid" like Asuma. Shikamaru's sense of duty and commitment to the future of his village is also reflected in his willingness to enforce the Konoha 12's raw decision to kill Sasuke at all costs, even in the face of potential objections from the original members of Team Kakashi.

Chōji Akimichi is Shikamaru's best friend, whom he respects and trusts.

Before Shikamaru entered the Ninja Academy, he managed to form a long and lasting friendship with Chōji Akimichi. This happened when Shikamaru went to his place and encouraged him after Chōji had been ridiculed because of his weight, becoming his best friend at that moment.

Before entering the academy, Shikamaru, along with Ino and Chōji, find themselves in a forest looking for Chōji's kunais that were lost during one of their training sessions. There they see a crying boy hanging from a tree with Chōji's kunais, so Chōji and Shikamaru tried to climb up to help him but, due to a persistent rain, they only caused the tree to fall. After learning his name, they discover that Yota was hungry, so the boys brought him food, but it was not enough, so Yota starts crying, causing Chōji, Shikamaru and Ino to cry as well. Later, the boys began stealing food from the academy students to give to Yota, thanks to the snow created by Yota's happiness, they began to play different games and activities, such as creating igloos and snowballs. Shikamaru and the others then find Yota, who was throwing lightning bolts at Naruto, Kiba, and Akamaru because Yota didn't like dogs. Later, with Yota calmed down, the boys set out to play together. The next day, Shikamaru and Chōji decide to visit Naruto's house because he was alone, from there they observe a downpour in the Hokage Mansion, then, they remembered Yota and decided to rescue him, since he had been kidnapped by some ANBU from the village. There, Shikamaru catches the high commands with his Technique: Shadow Imitation, but later it was seen that it was useless.

In their attempt to escape, the boys had to walk across the river, as they were not yet able to walk on water. In that, Chōji, Naruto, Shikamaru and Yota are swept away, but luckily, Shikamaru and Chōji are dragged away

Shikamaru and Chōji are washed ashore. Yota is very tired after saving Naruto and tells the boys that it is time to say goodbye, erasing their memory of what happened.

Upon entering the Academy, Shikamaru, Chōji, Kiba and Naruto were known for being the troublemakers and lazy ones, spending their days skipping classes. In Shikamaru's case, he spent most of the day sleeping between classes, and he also did nothing due to his laziness to make any kind of effort, even putting pen to paper was too much. Iruka Umino, his instructor, gave the same punishment to the four troublemakers. During his academy years, he was not a brilliant student in terms of grades, since being so lazy, he did the minimum to pass, even so, he has always been incredibly smart.

He said that if he had to fight Chōji in the Chūnin Exams, he would give up. After Chōji stopped fighting Jirōbō, he told the rest of the team that Chōji is stronger than anyone on this team. Shikamaru likes to play thinking games, usually played by older men, such as Shōgi and Go. (His teacher, Asuma, even said at one point, "That guy is like an old man: He likes to take things easy.").

A distinctive character trait of Shikamaru is that he considers most women bossy and "troublesome", most notably Temari, his mother, and Ino. He usually defines them as aggressive, demanding, and sometimes even scary. Considering his mother's tyrannical personality, this isn't too surprising. However, his father shares the exact same attitude, even though he married Yoshino in the first place. When Shikamaru asked his father about why he would marry a domineering woman, his father replied that even bossy women can show their gentle side for the man they love. However, Shikamaru is generally polite to women, doing favors and avoiding fights with them. He feels that men like him should be the ones to protect them and not the other way around. Despite this last point, he almost exclusively fought against women during Part I, albeit due to circumstances that were mostly out of his control or life-or-death.

He has expressed particular interest in maturing in marriage and starting a family. He dreams of marrying a normal girl who is neither a prodigy nor a freak. Having two children, first a girl, then a boy. Retiring after his daughter is married and his son has become a successful ninja to spend a quiet retirement playing Shogi and Go. Then dying of old age before his wife.

Shikamaru has also shown a bit of a devious side. When he brings food to Chōji while he is away,

At the hospital during the Chūnin Exams, the nurse tells him that Chōji is suffering from indigestion and cannot eat food. Therefore, Shikamaru goes to Naruto's room to give him food. When Naruto tells Shikamaru that he wants to eat in front of Chōji to annoy him, Shikamaru says, "Old man, you're cruel... I like it."

-(Often) "What a pain! How boring! What a drag! Why do I always have to fight?" -(After Asuma dies) "I... I really hate cigarettes...
