It's his most distinctive feature. He always wears his hair tied back in a high, spiky ponytail (pineapple style), traditional to the Nara clan. He usually carries Asuma's Chakra Blades either stored or at hand, as a tribute to his master. He is slender but athletic. He isn't muscular like Lee or Neji, but he has the agility required of a support ninja.

For him, almost everything in life is a nuisance, especially responsibilities, unnecessary fights, and, in his opinion, "troublesome women/men" (though ironically, he always ends up surrounded by them). He has an IQ over 200. He doesn't fight with brute force, but with strategy. He sees the battlefield as a Shogi board (Japanese chess), where every ally and enemy is a piece with a purpose. After the death of his teacher Asuma, Shikamaru went from being a lazy kid to someone extremely responsible and protective. He feels the weight of caring for the "next generation." He rarely panics. When he gets serious, he often joins his fingertips in a square in front of his face to concentrate and think of a tactic.
