Jefferson retired from being Black Lightning nine years earlier after the role negatively impacted his family, but he must once again become the vigilante when his daughters, Anissa and Jennifer, are kidnapped by associates of the local criminal gang, The 100. In the aftermath, Anissa begins to develop her own abilities and becomes Thunder, while Jennifer also starts to develop electrical powers. The show explores the balance between family life and being a superhero, and also deals with real-world issues such as racism, gangs, and colorism.
