History

Detective Lieutenant Chin Ho Kelly is a former member of the Hawaii Five-0 Task Force and a highly decorated former HPD police officer before being wrongly accused of corruption, resulting in his career and reputation being tarnished.

He was later recruited into Five-0 by Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett and it was also revealed that Steve's father, John McGarrett, was the one who trained Chin to be a police officer.

For a short time, following the assassination of Governor Pat Jameson and the disbanding of Hawaii Five-0, Chin temporarily joined the Honolulu Police Department once again, but after Steve was acquitted, Hawaii Five-0 was reopened and Chin officially rejoined the team. Chin would then leave Hawaii after season 7 to become the leader of the San Francisco branch of the Hawaii Five-0 task force.

History

Born and raised in Hawaii, Chin lived a relatively normal life and during his time in high school befriended teenager Steve McGarrett.

At some point in his later adult years, Chin joined the Honolulu Police Department, but his career was eventually left in tatters when he took the fall for his uncle, Keako, who had stolen money, as Keako's wife and Kono and Chin's aunt, Mele, were seriously ill and in need of a kidney.

Not wanting his uncle to be shamed, Chin took the blame, and many of his former officers considered him a thief.

After resigning from HPD, Chin became a security guard and the consequences prompted him to leave his fiancée, Dr. Malia Waincroft, to protect her.

History

In the pilot episode, Chin met with Steve and instantly agreed to join the unnamed task force; Chin's technological skills and knowledge of Hawaii in general gave the team a huge advantage. In the second season, Chin proposed to his ex-fiancée, Dr. Malia Waincroft, and the two later tied the knot in a beach ceremony surrounded by their friends and family.

He and Detective Danny Williams join forces with NCIS Special Agent G. Callen and Special Agent Sam Hanna to stop a smallpox outbreak during Pa Make Loa (episode) and both teams head to Los Angeles to stop a global pandemic in the final episode, Touch of Death (episode).

In the end, he was forced to choose between rescuing his wife or his cousin. In the premiere, Malia died from her injuries, leaving Chin devastated, though he later avenges her death and the team is seen at her funeral (3.02). In the finale, he asked Leilani out on a date. In Hana Lokomaika'i, Internal Affairs interrogates Chin about his contact with Gabriel Waincroft. The situation is tense for Chin because Gabriel is Malia's brother and Chin tried to protect Gabriel when they were younger. It is later revealed that Gabriel killed Chin's father. In an alternate reality seen in Ina Paha (episode), as a result of the Hawaii Five-0 task force not being created, the Chin of that reality is presumably still highly respected and admired as a detective.

As such, he has been promoted to Captain and also holds a high position in the Honolulu Police Department.

History

In Pilina Koko, during the investigation of the murder of a young mother, it is discovered that Gabriel Waincroft is the father of her daughter. This means that Chin discovers that he has a niece named Sara Waincroft. Later, in Pa'a Ka 'Ipuka I Ka 'Upena Nananana, before Gabriel dies, he reconciles with Chin and asks him to look after Sara. In 7.01, it is revealed that Chin has been babysitting Sara. They are eating breakfast while making pancakes when a woman knocks on the door. She says she is from DCFS and that they have found Sara's aunt and uncle who live in Mexico. They are working on gaining custody of Sara.

In episode 7.11, Chin and the rest of Five-0 travel to Mexico when it is discovered that Sara has been kidnapped. During the course of the investigation, it is discovered that Sara was not the target, but Five-0. Chin turns himself in to the bad guys in exchange for Sara. Five-0 ends up saving Chin in the following episode, 7.12. Maria and Jorge give Chin custody of Sara. Chin, Sara, and the rest of Five-0 return to Mexico.

Personality

Despite the accusations against him, Chin is an honest cop through and through, though he has expressed some pain over the fact that many of his former HPD colleagues and family (excluding Kono) sometimes do not trust him.

Chin is also extremely loyal to his family, having unwittingly sacrificed his own career to protect his uncle from the consequences.

Chin is very protective of his cousin, Kono.

Much like the respect of his H50 colleagues, Chin has a strong loyalty to Steve and claims that he has found a home in H50, suggesting that he is happy with his job as a member of H50 and has no desire to return to HPD.

Appearance

Chin is a thin man of Asian descent with wavy, curly brown hair and brown eyes. His hair length changes from "long" to short as the series progresses.

When relaxing on the beach with friends or family, he is often seen wearing shorts, a loose-fitting t-shirt, and sandals. When on duty, he has no distinctive style. Unlike HPD officers, H50 does not have an official uniform. His daily attire ranges from tight-fitting shirts with jeans to traditional flowered Hawaiian shirts. On his waist, on the right side, he has his gun and his badge, which is prominently displayed.

When he is consciously heading into the line of fire or investigating a scenario that may present danger, he will wear a neutral colored shirt with a black bulletproof vest that has a small patch on the chest displaying his name and department. On the front of his vest, he has a row of extra shells for his shotgun, holsters for what appear to be pocketknife sized items, gloves. On the back, there is a small backpack. Unlike when he is wearing regular clothing, his pistol and holster are located on his right thigh.

In both his regular attire and his active duty attire, he always wears a silver watch on his left wrist.

Skills

Chin, the third in command of Task Force H50 after Steve and Danny, is exceptionally skilled in weaponry and technology, and his skills are almost as good as Steve's.

Hand-to-hand combat: Chin is skilled in hand-to-hand combat and can easily defend himself. Technology: Chin is adept at using the technology that the Five-0 team has at their disposal. He is always seen with a technological device on him and is even capable of recovering a damaged phone or SD card. Profiling: Given his experience as a police officer, Chin can get inside the mind of the criminal and even accurately predict his next move. Interrogation: Chin is an expert at interrogation. Firearms: Like the members of H50, Chin is a weapons expert and is usually seen wielding a SIG-Sauer P229R, although he has been seen wielding a Benelli M1 Super 90 (short barrel).
