Misato Katsuragi After moving to Tokyo-3, Shinji lives in a small apartment with Misato and her pet penguin, Pen Pen. At first, Shinji disapproves of the girl's lifestyle. She is messy, consuming a lot of beer, snacks, and instant meals.

When Rei was severely injured in the accident with Unit-00, Gendo summoned Shinji to become the pilot of Unit-01. Asuka: Throughout the series it is evident that Asuka has a love/hate relationship with Shinji. They are attracted to each other, but are unable to express their feelings. Kaworu Nagisa: Kaworu and Shinji meet in episode 24. Although their time together was very short, Shinji developed a strong attachment to him, which might seem odd given his introverted personality. It's clear that Kaworu represents some sort of idealized figure for Shinji.

It is important to clarify that young Ikari had been left without friends due to the recent events of the story. Given this situation, the mysterious young man appears at the right time, when Shinji is completely desperate and needs to have some kind of connection with someone.

Shinji was afraid to talk to Asuka, Misato, and Rei, and had reinforced his mistaken belief that no one cared about him. Despite this, Kaworu quickly became a trustworthy person, possibly due to his easy-going attitude and ability to keep a conversation flowing.
