Ryoichi Hatayama is a cadet in the Pacific Defense Corps. Ryoichi is an expert in multiple martial arts and is the co-pilot of the Saber Athena, a robot to which he connects neurally with a partner to be controlled. Due to the connection of both individuals with the machine, they can feel the damage that is inflicted on it as if it were their own, reaching the point of being able to kill them if the robot receives critical damage or if one of them is left alone controlling the robot. that mental and physical strength has to be inhuman to endure controlling a robot alone for a couple of minutes.

Ryoichi Hatayama is a resident of Japan and the son of an Interpol officer. During the Kaiju Wars, Ryoichi came face to face with a Kaiju and lived to tell the tale.
Ryoichi decides to pursue his dream of becoming a Jaeger pilot and joins the restructured Pan Pacific Defense Corps in late summer.
Ryoichi arrives at the Moyulan Shatterdome with cadets Ou-Yang Jinhai, Suresh Khuran, and Renata Gutierrez (his future co-pilot on the Athena Saber) in time to receive guidance under the supervision of Nathan Lambert and Joseph Burke. When cadets Braga and Vu graduate from the mock test in the Mark-5 Jaeger, Chronos Berserker, which ends with Braga's death, Ryoichi and the others are unaware of what happened. However, they correctly deduce that the Jaeger was sabotaged by someone who entered the Conn-Pod before the test began.
They begin meeting in secret and try to figure out for themselves who among them is responsible for the incident. Although none of them believe themselves responsible for what happened, Ryoichi tells the others that it is possible that one of them is responsible, but they are unaware of his actions. He extrapolates further, saying that his father knew individuals in the criminal underworld who could manipulate minds using Pons technology to plant suggestions in their minds that they would forget.

Ryoichi is reading comics at the cadet barracks when Nate arrives with Jake Pentecost and Amara Namani. Seeing him first, Ryoichi alerts the others and they stand at attention. Nate and the others inform Ryoichi that Jake would help him continue his training and that Amara was late. Later, Ryoichi, along with the cadets, try to stop a fight between Amara and Viktoriya Malikova, who took issue with the fact that Amara was allowed to enter the academy without facing the obstacles that she or the others had to face. bear.
Ryoichi is one of several Moyulan Shatterdome staff trying to escape the chaos created by the hybrid drone attack. When Shao Industries boss Liwen Shao is able to disable the drone hybrids with a feedback loop, Ryoichi helps the others restore full functionality to the surviving Jaegers.
When the cadets mobilize and head to MegaTokyo to stop Kaiju Raijin, Hakuja, and Shrikethorn, Ryoichi teams up with Renata in Saber Athena. The two confront Hakuja, using Saber Athena's Ionic Twinblades to slash Hakuja's right shoulder and knock the Kaiju down as he retaliates. Ryoichi and Renata see Shrikethorn approaching behind them and are too late to stop his spike from disarming Saber Athena. They call for help and Suresh and Ilya come to their rescue, leading Shrikethorn away from them.
When the three Kaiju fuse to create a stronger Kaiju, Ryoichi and Renata attempt to deactivate the Mega-Kaiju by cutting off its secondary brains. The Mega-Kaiju, however, is able to sever Saber Athena's legs from beneath his body before tossing him aside. Despite the damage caused, Ryoichi and Renata are able to escape the Jaeger and go help Ilya remove the remains of the Brave Guardian.

He is serious, but when you meet him he becomes friendly, funny and sometimes a little annoying and silly. Sometimes he is too serious and other times more relaxed. He is very dedicated to his work as a cadet, he worked hard to get to where he is now and he wouldn't sacrifice it for anything. He worships Saber Athena. Since he was a child his dream was to drive a robot like these and when he fulfilled his dream he couldn't stop smiling.
