Jake was initially raised by his adoptive Grandmother. Jake's grandmother adopted Jake and tried to live in a jungle on a Pacific island, where she studied ancient ruins. When Jake was young, Jade, Jake's adoptive grandmother, seemed to not come home for days. Jake located her and found her body with 3 holes in it. Jake cremated her body and stored the pieces in the Frog Temple, thus leaving Jake alone on the island. Jake lives inside a circular house that contains his own bedroom. The area surrounding where the house once stood has been invaded by the growth of a certain orange pumpkin. Similarly, if you go down the stairs from Jake's room, you can reach other underground rooms. Also, near his home, is the island's volcano, which appears to be active, making it unsuitable for living. Throughout the island, there is a terrifying familiar fauna, including crab-like creatures that walk like humans, small fairy bulls that fly around the island, centaurs, some dragons, a flying whale, and a sea goat.

Jake loves adventure and fights. He prefers movies and is allergic to peanuts. He has a preference for ladies with blue skin and SPIDER-GIRLS. Despite his friendly-active attitude and ornate vocabulary, Jake is not very assertive and extremely socially disoriented, giving the speech "I'm so glad we're friends" to two interested girls within hours. He's also quite stupid, he didn't pick up on the obvious clues that Dirk sent him. It is believed that living alone on an island has been the cause. Also for this reason, he has shown to be incredibly self-centered. His margin of solitary education has also caused him not to get used to close relationships, and he rushes to consider breaking up with Dirk for his enjoyment of being on his own.

All of his friends have at some point had a romantic interest in Jake, although Roxy has stepped aside because she doesn't want to risk her friendship with Jane and Dirk. Neither Jane nor Dirk have explicitly revealed their feelings to Jake, although he suspects that both are interested in him and has entertained the option of ending up with both. When he spoke to Jane about it, she denied her feelings for him because she was too nervous or caught off guard by his question. Jake is surprised but relieved because the situation becomes less complicated for him, and confesses that he thinks he and Dirk could be a good match. He also seems to have a crush on Aranea Serket (a gray-skinned alien with horns, blue blood, and an interest in spiders), but Jake believes that she is just a figment of his imagination.
