Nanami is a very judicious and reserved person, often giving the impression of being aloof and indifferent. He seems like a man who takes his work too seriously, but Nanami simply knows how to separate sentimentality from service. Nanami is a tall man of sturdy build with neatly styled blond hair. He has very thin eyebrows, as well as small eyes that are covered by sunglasses without arms. As a former office worker, Nanami usually wears a business suit that consists of a beige jacket and pants, a light-colored shirt, and boots. A blunted knife is behind her back, in a special mount that is covered by his jacket. Also, Nanami wears a tie that has the same dot pattern as the windings of his knife. While studying at the Tokyo School of Magic, Nanami wore the normal uniform of the school's students. He also had neat bangs slicked to the right side. Nanami is an extremely technical fighter who plans to use his every move to exploit a gap in his opponent. Against stronger opponents, Nanami fights by smashing them and constantly creating weaknesses until they eventually fall. This same level of precision allows Nanami to dodge enemy attacks with clever maneuvers.

Nanami's greatest assets in combat, aside from his cursed technique, are his shrewd combat instincts and deductive reasoning skills. When Nanami was assigned the Mahito case, he was able to effectively use his team to find the right clues that eventually led them straight to Mahito. He was also able to recognize that Mahito was intentionally leading them to his hideout, and decided to go it alone to prevent the others from getting hurt. During their first encounter, Nanami eventually realized that his cursed technique could not defeat Mahito's technique. As a countermeasure, Nanami used the surroundings to pin Mahito down. In their second fight, Nanami quickly realized that Yugi could throw punches that actually did damage to Mahito. Nanami instantly came up with a strategy to crush Mahito together that completely worked, and would have killed the cursed special class spirit if not for Mahito's sudden evolution. Finding himself at the mercy of Mahito's domain expansion, Nanami was able to instantly appreciate his position and what it meant to Mahito's advantage.

Nanami mostly goes into battle with a blunt, short blade wrapped in a cloth with a pattern of black dots. The same dotted pattern is also on Nanami's tie, which he sometimes wraps around his fist. He uses both to activate his innate technique, and attacks at his target's weak spot.

Nanami is incredibly durable for a human even by mage standards. As mentioned earlier, he was able to survive the touch of Mahito's Celebrated Transfiguration, continued fighting, and eventually escaped with his life and body intact. When Shigemo fought Nanami, he attempted to hit him with his fist immediately afterward. However, Nanami was unhurt by the blow and did not move even an inch from the curse user's punch. Shigemo compared Nanami's punch to hitting a stone wall and said that it felt like he hadn't even hit a person. In addition, Nanami endured the endless swarm of Shikigami's man-eating fish for over a minute and was attacked by Jogo shortly afterward. He miraculously managed to survive both of these and was even able to continue fighting, unlike Maki and Naobito who were completely incapacitated and on the verge of death.

Nanami possesses a remarkable level of cursed energy for a mage. He can utilize his innate techniques while boosting his body with cursed energy without showing any signs of depletion. His control over his cursed energy is also evidenced by his ability to impose a binding vow on himself and restrict it for a certain period of time. Even after Mahito's injury, Nanami's cursed energy rose to a level that frightened and excited even a special rank. Against Mahito's idle transformation, Nanami subconsciously protected his soul with cursed energy to survive the blow of his opponent's innate technique. Nobara and Shigemo immediately sensed Nanami's presence as he entered their battle. His overwhelming energy paralyzed them both and caught their attention as he walked through the door. Shigemo tried to strike Nanami, but the fact that he had already strengthened his body with the cursed energy was more than enough to avoid the blow. It was so easy that Shigemo didn't even have time to realize what had happened.

Overtime (時じ間かん外がい労ろう働どう Jikangairōdō?): Nanami's oath that binds him to himself. Nanami limits the amount of cursed energy he can use during the time he is officially working at the School of Magic. Once he goes beyond his normal shift and overtime begins, Nanami's cursed energy increases tremendously and increases his combat power. Working normal hours, Nanami suppresses his cursed energy by about 80-90%. Working overtime, Nanami uses 110-120% of his maximum energy. Nanami can actively break his oath and use 100% of his cursed energy at any given time, but using overtime in this case will only result in a 1% increase.

During the Shibuya Incident, Nanami demonstrated his leadership abilities along with great intelligence and fighting strength. Upon learning of Satoru's sealing, Nanami was able to figure out what move would be best for his team and helped implement the plan to rescue Mechamaru without delay. Realizing that Kietaka Ijichi and the managers were crucial to communication in a large-scale mission, Nanami went alone to develop protocols for operations while delegating the rest of the team to another assignment. Upon discovering that Ijichi was injured, Nanami was quickly able to track down the culprit, Haruta Shigemo, and beat the curse user senseless without even a scratch. This performance in particular stunned Nobaru Kugisaki, a very capable 3rd grade student. Watching Nanami fight made her realize that he was on a whole other level and embodied what it means to be a true 1st grade judjutsu master. Trapped in the Dagon Domain, Nanami was unable to take any offensive stance at all. However, he miraculously survived the endless stream of Death Swarm Shikigami for over a minute, which surprised him, the domain caster. Once Megumi arrived and negated Dagon's automatic strike with his own Domain, Nanami focused on Megumi's defense and was easily able to deal with any shikigami that attempted to attack the student despite his injuries. Despite being severely wounded by Dagon and later burned by Jogo, Nanami destroyed an entire swarm of transformed humans who tried to kill him.
