On the hike, Derek was suddenly ambushed and severely wounded in the side of his stomach. He had to stay behind so his companions could escape, while he managed to flee in another direction, although he was now dying. He found himself sitting on the roots of a tree, leaning against the trunk as he tried to stop the bleeding despite knowing he might die soon.
