At the end of the Golden Age, Griffith sold his friends to the demonic Hand of God in exchange for the right to take a place in its ranks, and was indeed reborn as a demonic being named Femto. Guts, Casca and Rickert were the only ones who managed to survive, and Guts subsequently spent years trying to find Griffith-Femto and take revenge on him.
