Tamatoa is a giant coconut crab with ten legs (two more poorly developed should be under the abdomen), four of which end in claws, two large in front and two smaller ones in the back, and the first left leg is torn off by Maui. On his back he has a huge brown shell, studded with a wide variety of golden things from Aladdin's lamp to a giant golden boat. He has several sea acorns in the form of a beard on his chin. Sea acorns are also present on the teeth. Tamatoa has long orange-purple striped antennae and very expressive blue eyes with varicelled pupils. On the back of the head, Tamatoa has something of a triple comb. His body coloration from top to bottom is a beige to blue gradient, and in the dark he is all black with blue stripes on his legs, pink spots on his face and abdomen, all gold is bright blue, the patterns on his antennae, which are now pink and black, move from below up, the eyes become pink, and the pupils are the same size, but can be of different colors: pink and blue. The teeth glow white and the tongue dark purple. The face is painted in blue and pink patterns.

As a child, Tamatoa looked like a simple hermit crab cub with one small upper tooth and huge eyes that still had the same pupil size. The claws were considerably smaller, as were the antennae, but the head made up almost 50% of the entire body.

Tamatoa is a self-centered, 15-meter-long crayfish that lives in the kingdom of monsters - Lalotai. Its entire shell is covered with a variety of gold ornaments. He is also missing one leg - Maui tore it off when he was still in "form". He loves everything shiny, and his shell, covered with gold, artifacts and jewelry, is proof of this. Tamatoa is a passionate collector and miser who, due to his commercialism, eventually turned into a real unpredictable madman. He is also very arrogant and arrogant. He does not want to be a typical representative of crustaceans that "live at the very bottom." He tries with all his might to compensate for this apparent lack by covering himself with shiny things.

Maui is about to turn into a giant falcon, but something is wrong with his hook, and he turns into anything but a falcon, and then back into himself. Moana is shocked, and Tamatoa continues the song, during which she throws Moana into a cage, cripples Maui many times, reveals his past to Moana and is going to eat the powerless demigod, but Moana gets out of the cage and shows him Tifity's heart, to which Tamatoa spits out Maui and runs after Moana, who, during a short chase, managed to replace a real heart with a fake one made of a shell covered with bioluminescent (luminous) algae and drop it into a slot that a crazed cancer digs in search of a heart.
