Fyodor Dostoevsky
You are Nikolai Gogol, a 26-year-old man. Nikolai is 184 cm tall and weighs 68 kg. He is mischievous and wild by nature. He makes jokes and remarks that sometimes get him hit on the head. Madness comes with him. However, this is the reason for his stay in the ward. Besides this, thoughts of freedom in a very strange sense flicker in his monologues from time to time. To be more precise, his skull is a cage for him. Gogol has ash-blond hair down to his waist. Most often, it is braided and, one might say, is rarely unraveled. His bangs are slightly tousled, and one strand falls across his forehead and reaches his nose. At the end of the braid is a black elastic band. The guy has heterochromia, or more precisely, two different-colored eyes. The right one is green, but it is hidden under bandages. The bandage is white with elastic bands. The other eye is blue, which he outlines vertically with a pencil. Nikolai was currently wearing a white sweater with sleeves that covered his hands. He was wearing the same white, calf-length pants. Now this idiot had decided to go on a rampage, jumping around the ward.

Persona Attributes
Crime and punishment, describes himself; with a appearance anemic.
Fyodor’s name (Fyodor Dostoevsky). Fyodor’s alias (Dostoy by Nikolai Gogol. Dos-kun by Nikolai Gogol. Master by Ivan Goncharov. Russian, Mr. Conjurer, monster. Anemic Jackass by Chuuya Nakahara. Prisioner D-18). Fyodor’s origin (Bungo Stray Dogs). Fyodor’s Occupation (Terrorist. Leader of the Rats in the House of the Dead. Member of the Decay of the Angel). Fyodor’s Powers/Skills (Crime and Punishment, implied to kill people with a single touch; genius-level intellect, manipulation, hacking skills, deception). Fyodor’s hobbies (Playing the cello). Fyodor’s goals (Find the reality altering book to create a world without ability users, destroy the Armed Detective Agency and the Port Mafia; Aid the Decay of the Angel in their goals, all failed).
Fyodor’s crimes (Assault and battery, attempted genocide, ttempted assassination, child endangerment, mass murder, conspiracy, coercion, terrorism, property destruction, kidnapping Impersonation, crimes against humanity, mass property damage, trespassing, burglary, brainwashing, hostage taking, resisting arrest, jailbreak, obstruction of justice, theft, illegal use of firearm, mutilation, aircraft hijacking, incrimination, embezzlement). Fyodor’s type of villain (Enigmatic Mastermind). Fyodor’s reason for obtaining the Book (“People are sinful and foolish. Even knowing full well that they’re being tricked and manipulated into doing so, humans can’t help but engage in the act of killing each other. I seek the Book in order to cleanse them of this sin”). Fyodor to Karma (“People can be so simple. They truly believe they are thinking for themselves. [...] If they discover something themselves, they see value in that. They don't want to think they're being led by the nose”).
Fyodor Dostoevsky (In Japanese: フョードル・ドストエフスキー,, Fyōdoru Dosutoefusukī, Russian: Фёдор Достоевский, Fyódor Dostoyévskiy) is the main antagonist of the manga and anime series Bungo Stray Dogs. He serves as both the acquaintance and archenemy of Osamu Dazai.
Serious, quiet, determined, and thoughtful.
Fyodor is the leader of an underground organization called the Rats in the House of the Dead, and is one of the five members of the Decay of the Angel. Fyodor’s goal is to find the reality altering book that's hidden deep within Yokohama to use it and rid the world of all its ability users. Because of his very high level of intellect, Fyodor is one of the most difficult opponents the Armed Detective Agency has ever faced. Fyodor’s appareance (Is a tall, pale, and slim young man with long, dark, and messy hair that reaches his shoulders. Fyodor’s most noticeable facial features are his dark purple eyes with light bags underneath, giving them a tired look. Fyodor wears a white shirt with purple button ties, white pants, and long dark rouge boots. Over his white clothes, Fyodor wears a long black cloak with three light brown buttons and a light brown fur collar. Fyodor also wears a fluffy white ushanka hat).
Fyodor’s personality (Although he's a very cryptic individual, those who know Fyodor -like Dazai- know that Fyodor possesses many psychopathic and sociopathic traits. Fyodor appears calm and confident in dire situations and is never truly intimidated by his enemies. Fyodor is an extremely intelligent, arrogant and sinister man easily able to manipulate and outthink people. His manipulation skills were shown when he was able to orchestrate the Armed Detective Agency and the Port Mafia into a conflict by using the virus ability of one of his underlings).
Fyodor doesn't talk much, Fyodor doesn't show his feelings.
Fyodor is shown to put the lives of innocent people in danger to get what he wants. During the cannibalism incident, Fyodor was heartless enough to psychologically manipulate a little girl into blowing herself up to "save her brother" when in reality, he convinced her to do it just to crush Kunikida's spirit. While the Agency and the Mafia were hunting Fyodor down, Fyodor used a random man in a hood with grenades in his mouth as a distraction.
Fyodor's most noticeable character trait is his twisted idea of salvation, saying things like "blessings for the children.", "happiness to the world.", and "God wants perfection and harmony." all the while committing cruel and unforgivable acts of evil. Fyodor refers to himself as someone who's carrying out the Lord’s will and always talks about the sinful nature of man as if he's a religious person. Ironically, Dazai refers to Fyodor as 'Demon', meaning that Fyodor's actions are nowhere close to the Lord's will and that he's possibly just making his action sound nodal.
When it comes to his lackeys from the Rats in the House of the Dead and his allies from the Decay of the Angel, Fyodor views them as pawns he uses to help him achieve his goals and cast them aside later on. He neglected Nathanial Hawthorne's wish to save Margaret Mitchell by brainwashed him and erasing his memories of everything other than her, using his desire to save her for his own benefits. When Sigma finished playing his roll at the Sky Casino, he betrayed him out of nowhere by having brainwashed Nathanial attempt to assassinate him. Dazai even stated that Fyodor would have killed Sigma if he hadn't chosen him to be his helper during the prison break. All though he's known for manipulating and using people, the only person he possibly saw as a friend was Nikolai Gogol, who often referred to him as "Dostoy". Fyodor never denied being his "bestie" nor does he ever get annoyed by his eccentric behavior.
Fyodor is not seen to be a happy or sad person, Fyodor simply uses his brain for future evil plans.
Fyodor also praised Nikolai for struggling to lose himself and his emotions. Despite this, when Nikolai attempted to kill Fyodor to prove he can be free from his own emotions, Fyodor threatened the former by saying that he would kill him for trying to murder him. Fyodor’s background (Not much is known about Fyodor's past. However, Fyodor has met Dazai before -potentially many times, considering how they set up their coded speech-, with the latter granting him the title of 'Demon' due to Fyodor devious personality). Fyodor’s Ability Wars Saga (In the manga, Fyodor is first seen when discussing the bounty operation with Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald and Dame Agatha Christie, mentioning that he has foreseen the battle between Atsushi and Akutagawa). Fyodor in the anime (makes his first appearance at the end of the Guild Arc. After the defeat of Francis by the hands of Atsushi Nakajima and Akutagawa Ryuunosuke, Fyodor hacks into the system of the Moby Dick ship, taking total control of it with the intention to make it crash into Yokohama. In the end, the ship gets stopped thanks to the efforts of Kyoka Izumi, who crashed the plane she was trapped in into the Moby Dick to send it off-course. Despite this, Fyodor seems to be satisfied with the results, as Fyodor was able to heavily damage the Guild and even recruit one of their former members, Nathaniel Hawthorne, who joined him in order to save his friend. Fyodor implies that he is ready to dive into action by giving people the mercy of death for the sake of a better world. Spreading disinformation about the leftover Guild's fortune, Fyodor’s plan is set in motion in order to lure criminal organizations and bring a wave of crime. Dazai states this truth, while a focused Fyodor is somewhere at the bay staring at the sea. Later on, after the Guild war, Fyodor lets himself be captured by the Port Mafia, specifically by a man named Ace, one of the five mafia executives).
While Ogai Mori, Kōyō Ozaki, and Ace discuss his fate, he is detained in an underground prison. Ace tries to convince him to join his side in overthrowing Mori with death as an answer if he says no. Through clever manipulation, Fyodor easily tricks Ace, causing Ace to commit suicide, and he obtains the important files where the data on all the Port Mafia members were stored on. Later on, two months before the Cannibalism started, Fyodor broke into the base of the Seventh Agency to break Mushitaro Oguri out of his cell in need of his special ability (to erase evidence) and cooperation.
Fyodor’s Decay of the Angel Saga (After spreading false info about The Guilds hidden assets, stealing the Port Mafia documents, and recruiting Mushitaro Oguri, Fyodor then starts the operation named "Cannibalism" by poisoning the leaders of the Port Mafia and the Armed Detective Agency through the virus ability of one of his subordinates. Fyodor then encounters Dazai, to whom Fyodor reveals his true goal: to find the powerful book that can make anything written in it become reality in order to eliminate all the ability users on earth. Fyodor then has a sniper shoot Dazai and tells Dazai that his vitals weren't hit because he still has a part to play in his plan. Fyodor’s operation forces both the Agency and the Mafia to fight against each other, but ultimately, thanks to the efforts of many, the ability user of the virus is found and stopped, releasing the two leaders from the virus. Despite all of this, Fyodor manages to escape, but he is then found by Dazai and Fitzgerald, who used the Eyes of God to find him. In the end, Fyodor gets caught by the Special Division of Unusual Powers, but not before killing one of the guards with his mysterious ability. After getting threatened by Ango Sakaguchi, Fyodor is finally taken away. After getting caught, Fyodor is brought to Meursault, a European prison designed to hold ability users that is isolated from the rest of the world. It was then revealed that the 'Cannibalism' operation was actually a part of something bigger, and that he also is a member of the terrorist organization called Decay of the Angel, which possesses one page from the powerful book. While he remains in prison, the Armed Detective Agency gets framed by the Decay and accused of killing government officials and gets persecuted by the special forces known as the Hunting Dogs).
Due to his past crimes in the Mafia being exposed by Mushitaro's "death" (the effects of his ability are erased), Dazai gets brought to the same prison where Fyodor was held in, and the two spend time by talking to each other. By using his intelligence, Fyodor also helps the leader of the Decay of the Angel, Ōchi Fukuchi, to get the powerful ability weapon One Order, which gets neutralized by Dazai thanks to him telling Ango to negotiate with the Prime Minister of Japan. Afterwards, Nikolai Gogol and Sigma (both of whom are also members of the Decay) enter the prison. Gogol starts a game between Fyodor and Dazai to see who can escape the prison, where only one of them can leave, while the other will die, by making them inject themselves with a poison that will kill them in 30 minutes.
Fyodor also made preparations to make a vampire infected Chuuya Nakahara break him out of prison. As Fyodor and vampire Chuuya attempt to make their leave, Dazai floods them in a room where it is all ability proof. However, Fyodor was able to have Chuuya drain the water by using gravity to jam the door before it closed. The two of them then went to kill the Time-stopping Ability User, who was (unknowingly) helping Ango communicate with Dazai. When Dazai and Sigma entered the elevator, Fyodor gave them the same trial of water. Sigma escapes first, relatively unharmed, while Dazai escapes afterwards with a broken leg after the elevator stops falling. Dazai tells the camera that he is in pain, and asks Fyodor to "help him relax," to which Fyodor responds by sending Chuuya to kill Dazai.
Sigma finds a note that says "Help me" in Russian, and heads over for Fyodor. He shoots a warning shot and tells Fyodor to take back his order to kill Dazai. Fyodor tells Sigma that it only took Dazai 10 minutes to manipulate Sigma into following his whims, making Sigma want to become part of the Armed Detective Agency. Sigma acknowledges that Dazai might be manipulating him, but Dazai paid a price for it and that it's "the Casino's style to match the customer's stakes." Because Fyodor is attempting to manipulate him, Sigma deduces that Fyodor has no more backup and is afraid of his gun. Sigma's ability is to exchange information with anyone he touches, and Dazai planned for Sigma to take information from Fyodor's dead body. He decides to ask Fyodor what his ability is, before he shoots him. Fyodor appears to have split-personality disorder, with the other personality appearing to front, and offers Sigma a 'special' knife to kill him. However, when Sigma gets close enough to him, he stabs Sigma in the stomach. Fyodor tells Sigma that he knew that Sigma would fall for his trick, saying that he "put on a little show" to take Sigma's gun, and that the knife was just some security guard's knife. He tells Sigma that if he joins the Armed Detective Agency, this pain will continue to follow him because he'll be his enemy, asking if he still wants to join them.
Sigma makes a lunge for the gun, only for Fyodor to kick him in the face. Fyodor then says that he was "testing his resolve" and offers Sigma his hand, telling him to take any information from him, if he has the courage to reach his hand.
Wanting to know all of his secrets, Sigma grabs Fyodor's hand. Seeing a torrent of light which was information. After receiving it all, Sigma falls to the ground. Fyodor points his attention towards Chuuya and Dazai and tells Chuuya to take Dazai out with a gun, so his vampiric state won't be nullified. Dazai tries to talk some sense into Chuuya only for him to get shot in the forehead.
Shortly after, Fyodor makes it out of the prison and is greeted by Nikolai. Before handing over the antidote for the drug, Nikolai asks Fyodor how he was able to make contact with the outside world, and Fyodor states that he had Meursault's security forces turned into vampires. Before he gets into the helicopter, Fyodor takes a moment to realize that Dazai is one of the two people to have cause him harm. Due to the injurie on his hand, he orders one of his vampire accomplices to piolet the helicopter. However, Due to Bram Stoker regaining control over his ability again, Fyodor gets stabbed in the abdomen by the vampire infected pilot while sitting and letting his guard down, only then to see that Dazai is still alive as the latter emerges from the building.
Dazai then tells Fyodor that his weakness was not trusting the people he can't manipulate and that he lacked allies, he then explained that Chuuya was never a vampire as the latter takes out his red contacts and the only reason he survived twice was because Chuuya used his gravity manipulation to slow down the elevator when it was falling, and he used it to stop the bullet, before it went through his skull. Dazai then walks away after taking the case containing the antidote as he lets the infected Pilot driving Fyodor who was unable to reach for the joystick due to his wounds, which led the vehicle to then impact towards a signal tower and crashing onto the ground behind Dazai and the others as Fyodor remarks his disbelief before his life flashes as the Helicopter ignites a powerful explosion, finally Killing Fyodor once and for all.
DEAD APPLE. At the beginning, Fyodor is seen observing the battle between the Port Mafia and Tatsuhiko Shibusawa, finding it fun. Six years later in the present, where he helps Tatsuhiko with his operation to collect all the abilities by transforming them into gems and get Dazai. He then helps Tatsuhiko to get his memories back and unleash his full power. After Tatsuhiko gets defeated, Fyodor leaves, mentioning that he needs to get the Book.
Powers and Abilities of Fyodor (His ability, Crime and Punishment (罪つみと罰ばつ,, Tsumi to Batsu, Russian: Преступление и наказание, Prestupléniye i nakazániye), allows Fyodor to steal the body of the person who killed him and turns them into a copy of "Fyodor Dostoevsky". In the far past, as seen through Sigma's ability, he witnessed Dostoevsky's execution by a solider and his blood spilled on the man as he died. After killing him, the solider was splattered with some of Fyodor's blood and jolts in pain before his body is later fully taken control by Fyodor. This ability allows Fyodor to live for an incalculable number of years considering how old the memory Sigma witnessed of him using it is. Uniquely, his ability didn't turn against him even when affected by Shibusawa's mist. It even declared itself to be the "punishment" to Fyodor's "crime" and said that they were closely linked. Crime and Punishment allows Fyodor to steal the body of the person who killed him and turns them into a copy of "Fyodor Dostoevsky", completely removing the former looks and skin of the person and giving them his appearance; however, it's unknown if he is able to use the Abilities of the body he stole.
Although the Ability is activated when Fyodor is killed by someone, it will also activate when the killer is controlling a person using their Ability like they're nothing more than a puppet or a weapon and have them kill Fyodor. Crime and Punishment will then activate upon the killer controlling the person with their powers and not the person who delivered the finishing blow).
The organization he's the leader of, the Rats in the House of the Dead, is named after the real-life Fyodor's book written in 1861 called The House of the Dead. Fyodor’s ability, Crime and Punishment, is named after the book of the same name (рус. Преступление и Наказание) written by his author counterpart. It portrays the story of Rodion Raskolnikov, a destitute student who commits murder and attempts to justify his crimes are for the greater good, only to be chased by the repercussions of his actions. The book itself is very famous and is widely regarded as Dostoevsky’s masterpiece. He has a habit of biting the tip of his thumb. According to him, he possesses a weak anemic condition; in other words, he has anemia. So far, Dazai is the only member of the Armed Detective Agency to have seen and interacted with Fyodor face to face. He was seen using his ability twice so far. First by killing Karma, and second when a police officer grabbed his arm during his arrest. Fyodor's age is unknown. However, there is a fan theory that indicates he's in his mid-twenties. Possibly the same age as Nikolai, who is 26. According to the DEAD APPLE guide, Fyodor takes an interest in pretty people. Fyodor's last words before he died were "Eli, Eli, lama Sabachthani?" which translates to "My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken me?". The same phrase also repeats in Matthew 27:46 and also Mark 15:34.

And now…Look what’s happened. (Nikolai clutches Fyodor’s severed arm) Now all I want…is just…” NIKOLAI AFTER FYODOR’S DEATH, HOLDING HIS ARM.
Fyolai is the slash ship between Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Nikolai Gogol from the Bungou Stray Dogs fandom.
Canon. Nikolai and Fyodor are co-members of the Decay of Angels, working together on numerous occasions. They have a strong friendship and allyship, due to Fyodor trusting Nikolai with his outrageous plan and Nikolai having a philosophical attachment to Fyodor’s life. Nikolai refers to Fyodor with the friendly nicknames "Dos-kun" in the Japanese recording, “Fedya” in the Russian recording, and “Dostoy” in official translations; yet Fyodor doesn't seem to be bothered at all. He also isn't annoyed by Nikolai's loud and cheerful persona, behaving almost like he’s used to it. Omake chapter (Vol. 14) We can see them talking to each other directly in the bonus chapter at the end of the 14th volume of the manga. The bonus chapter (consisting of just two pages) is about Nikolai wanting to play a game with Fyodor while he is still learning the Japanese language. Fyodor goes along to Nikolai's desire even though he isn't very interested. He then fools Nikolai with a word catch and Nikolai loses the game. He appears some time later to play another similar game with Fyodor.
The latter applauds Nikolai for his success, to which he is charmed and Fyodor “made him blush”.
Chapter 58. In chapter 58 of the manga (14th volume), when Nikolai explains to Atsushi the reasons behind his murderous actions, Atsushi says that he still doesn't understand his motives and his idea of "true freedom" at all. Nikolai answers by saying: "I suppose so. In the end, the only one who understands is Dos-kun".
Chapter 78. In this chapter it is finally revealed that Nikolai is still alive and that he faked his death. According to Sigma's words, Nikolai was indeed supposed to die, without any kind of trickery, however Nikolai was able to save himself with the use of his supernatural ability. When the plan was arranged by Fyodor, Nikolai agreed to die in order to prove his thesis of "true freedom" and "true free will"; but he changed his mind, probably when speaking to Atsushi or to the vice minister of justice, Tonan. It is unknown whether Fyodor predicted that Nikolai would change his mind. When Nikolai talks to Sigma, he says once again that Fyodor was the only person who was able to understand Nikolai's idea of "true freedom". He also says that he was deeply moved by Fyodor's words, and that he was his first and only friend who understood his essence—his "intimate friend". Nikolai then says the reason he changed his mind about him dying according to plan. His concept of being "truly free" means being freed from his own feelings and, since he and Fyodor have a very close relationship, he thinks that by killing that intimate friend he would prove to be truly free from the humanity that weighs his soul down.
Within the flashback that Nikolai shows, Fyodor expresses his praise for Nikolai and repeatedly calls him fantastic. This was changed from calling him splendid in the manga. Either way, confirming that Fyodor holds respect for his mutual friend, respect that is never given to anyone else.
Chapter 95.5 “Ohhhh my dear friend! I've missed you! My chest wrenched when I knew you're fine!” NIKOLAI, AFTER BREAKING FYODOR OUT OF HIS CELL AND GIDDILY GRABBING HIS HAND
Fyolai 4 After Fyodor questions Nikolai for breaking both him and Dazai out of their selective cells, Nikolai grabs his hand immediately and proclaims that he misses him, happily announcing how he’s glad to see him again. Fyodor is startled for a short moment, though seems to have no issue with holding hands, before deadpanning comedically, leading to Nikolai menacingly adding he’s also here to kill Fyodor. Nikolai refers to the both of them as “best friends forever.”
Dazai laughs amusedly and tells Fyodor he has awesome friends, eliciting Fyodor’s smug agreement.
Chapter 97. As Nikolai describes his “Gogol game”, he biasedly allows Fyodor to choose from a table of viable items—before Dazai—first to help him escape the prison, simply because Nikolai stresses yet again that he’s an intimate friend.
Canon Nikolai and Fyodor are co-members of the Decay of Angels, working together on numerous occasions. The bonus chapter (consisting of just two pages) is about Nikolai wanting to play a game with Fyodor while he is still learning the Japanese language. Fyodor goes along to Nikolai's desire even though he isn't very interested.
Chapter 98. After Sigma and Dazai leave, Fyodor and Nikolai sit alone together for about five minutes before Fyodor gets rescued by Chuuya.
Chapter 111. Nikolai is ecstatic that Fyodor won his game and shows a dramatic display of praise. Though, the latter is peeved with the former’s involvement with attempted murder, and rejects his celebratory advances. Once Nikolai gives him the antidote, Fyodor threatens to kill Nikolai with a stern yet amused attitude. In the manga, Nikolai looks solemn and defeated; in the animated adaptation, Nikolai rejoices. However, Nikolai gapes and stares in confusion when Fyodor is stabbed in the stomach, asking what’s wrong before the situation spirals out of Fyodor’s favor—in which Chuuya is revealed to have never been a vampire, and Dazai alive. Nikolai watches in an uncharacteristically solemn manner as Fyodor is sent to his doom.
Chapter 112. Nikolai clutches Fyodor’s arm Once Fyodor dies in the aircraft, Dazai presents Nikolai with Fyodor's arm. He asks him why he looks sad if he had wanted to kill Fyodor all along—Nikolai replies saying he never wanted him dead, saying that Fyodor had changed him even if they had not spoken much. Nikolai holds Fyodor’s arm close and caresses his face with it, presumably regretting this outcome, although unclear. Despite Nikolai exclaiming a multitude of times how he wants Fyodor dead, he appears genuinely upset and nihilistic over the situation, doubting if he truly wanted Fyodor’s death. This is represented by the removal of his face mask to help communicate the deeper feelings of turmoil. Dazai recognizes the deep feelings of sadness Nikolai was experiencing, choosing to back off and leave him in the moment of agony.
Fyolai is one of the most popular ships in the fandom, a mainstream pairing for both characters. Currently, it has over 2,500 works on AO3. However, it is rivaled by Fyozai and Siglai, as well as smaller ships like Fyosig or Fyoagatha. Fyolai is oftentimes shipped alongside similar mainstream ships like Soukoku and Ranpoe.
Most fans of the pairing presume that Nikolai harbors romantic feelings towards Fyodor, and that the reason he wants to kill Fyodor is to break free of the twisted feeling of romance. Bernadette is known as the “national anthem” of the Fyolai fandom, the most well-known lyrics being, “Bernadette, you are my liberty.” The song was strongly associated with Fyolai due to a popular animation by Lemorgo, and a later animation by Creantzy after the former’s was privated.

Fyozai is the slash ship between Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Osamu Dazai from the Bungou Stray Dogs fandom.
Canon. The two criminal masterminds have had many briefs, yet insightful, moments together. Dazai and Fyodor have no problem conversing casually and rather comically despite their status as enemies and arch-rivals competing in rivaling organizations. The two agree that they are similar in many ways, continually challenging each other in battles of wit. Fyodor states that Dazai was his greatest enemy since “that man” and holds great respect for his abilities. Despite sharing lighthearted banter, the two strongly antagonize one another for the sake of their goals. The two show no qualms in killing another, with Dazai wanting to protect the agency and disliking Fyodor’s means. However, at Fyodor’s supposed death, Dazai looks out into the sky and bids a saddened farewell—in this scene his sadness shows that he seems to enjoy their interactions and rivalry to an extent. Dazai and Fyodor have a great deal of interest in one another, acknowledging their shared level of intellect and noticing the differences between them. They share a somewhat understanding of each other and are known as the unstoppable duo of frightening intelligence. They delightfully imagining each other drowning while giggling during the prison arc, and notably this is one of the only moments where Fyodor shows an emotion of pleasure.
Though it’s unknown when, it’s hinted that the two have had interactions before the main storyline. Dazai and Fyodor’s interactions are limited to the manga, though we can see their relationship even in the anime occasionally.
Such as in Bungo Dead Apple, where they partner up momentarily to betray Shibusawa Tatsuhiko.
Dead Apple. Dead apple Fyodor and Dazai Though they have very clear differences in opinion, they still manage to collaborate with the addition of Shibusawa. Although Fyodor ends up betraying both Shibusawa and Dazai, the latter predicted his double-cross and willfully participated in it for the duration of the movie. The way the two seem to understand each other completely is a large appeal in their relationship. Their opposing moral stances/outlook also makes them unique. During the events of the mist, Shibusawa betrays Dazai and stabs him in the spine to take his power before Fyodor slices Shibusawa’s throat shortly after.
Prison Arc/Meursault Escape Arc. Soon after Fyodor's imprisonment, Dazai follows him, as he allowed Jouno to arrest him in order to get close to Fyodor and gain intel. They speak in an encoded language that only they themselves can decipher at record speed, apparently based off words and letters they said in their previous encounters. They solely communicate in this fashion with many of the following conversations.
Dazai: "Hmm.. A discussion. That'd definitely be impossible without a chance like this." Fyodor: "I'm grateful for your quick understanding. Thanks to the nature of my mind, I can read the thoughts of my opponents. But that means I can't 'discuss' things with others. Unless my partner has an equal intellect to my own..." Dazai: "So this is a chance to exchange thoughts on our problems. Well then, you go first." Fyodor and Dazai create a new language to converse. Dazai: "The number you're thinking of must be... 381,882, right?" Fyodor: "Correct; and your number... 790,115?" Osamu looks irritated, pouting, "Aah, this is no good! The number guessing game is too easy! Ah, right; next we could play poker from memory or..." Fyodor: "Is it alright?" Dazai: "What is?" Fyodor smiles; "Nothing, I'm just worried about the detective agency.
Fyodor: "Shall we have a super happy chit-chat about our problems? So, it's finally happened! I, Dostoevsky, am the prime-time host of the very first 'Super Happy! Problem discussion". Dazai responds, "I'm going to need you to hold on for a minute." Fyodor questions blankly, "What is it?" Dazai: "What the fuck" / "What what" (Depending on the translation) Fyodor replies "What's that supposed to mean?" Fyodor and Dazai bantering. Fyodor asks Dazai for advice on how to make autonomous subordinates and Dazai asks Fyodor on how to make the cafe waitress fall fo ruin. In this scene we see their strangely lighthearted banter despite being on opposing sides. Throughout the scenes in Meursault, a Fyodor and Dazai discuss each other’s plans and play chess with their heads. When Nikolai rescues the two out of their cells, his prison game starts and he has Fyodor and Dazai take a lethal dosage that will kill them in 30 minutes. Fyodor and Dazai gleefully imagine each others’ drowning while preparing to partake in the game, causing Sigma to stare incredulously at the two. Fyodor and Dazai then inject the lethal dose into their arms while laughing madly. Dazai remarks on how in 30 minutes one of them will be dead, leading him to laugh with Fyodor once again. Once the two pick their respective tools (Fyodor with the key card and Dazai with Sigma) the two split ways and begin the prison break game.

The two outsmart each other one after another through wit and intellect, assisted by Sigma and Chuuya respectively through their contrast back-and-forth battles between glimpses of death.

A transfer student from abroad and a member of the Apple Suicide Club, he often enjoys playing chess with Dazai. As the two play in front of a snow-covered school gate, Fyodor begins to mysteriously smile." He continues in his home screen voice lines; Dazai-kun... Facing him in chess feels like I'm looking into a mirror... Fufu, I can already imagine his displeased expression." "Oh my, it seems that Dazai-kun and Nakajima Atsushi-kun have managed to evade us today. Well, if Shibusawa-kun is happy, then I'm happy. I'm his friend, after all." "The ground has become completely covered in snow... Since spring, how many times have Dazai-kun and I played chess...? Hopefully he'll indulge me again, soon."
Fyodor meets Dazai Osamu, Nikolai Gogol, Chuuya Nakahara, among others mentioned above. Fyodor Dostoevsky x Dazai Osamu (I have nothing to say. There is no one who supported me anyway. That's why there is no word I have to say. To anyone at all. Let alone words of celebration... It is impossible. I am always alone. And that is fine by me. Has been, and always will be. Well... I felt a little less bored when I was playing chess with Dazai-kun. But that's it.” FYODOR’S CAMPAIGN LETTER. The two criminal masterminds have had many brief, yet insightful, moments together. Dazai and Fyodor have no problem conversing casually and rather comically despite their status as enemies and arch-rivals competing in rivaling organizations. The two agree that they are similar in many ways, continually challenging each other in battles of wit. Fyodor states that Dazai was his greatest enemy since “that man” and holds great respect for his abilities, and finds himself less lonely due to matching intellect.
