During the events of Deltarune , Kris is mentioned to be an introvert. [2] Susie and King refer to Kris as a "quiet person", and Noelle is shocked if they talk about "anything". [3] After Kris's brother, Asriel, left for college, they became estranged from their few friends. Kris's side of their shared room is also surprisingly empty. The shared game console is under Asriel's bed, and their old childhood books are in Toriel's classroom. Toriel has also mentioned that Kris is not usually energetic. [4] They have a history of not waking up on time and would often sleep through the start of classes. [5] Kris also preferred their mother to drive them to and from school instead of walking. [6]
Contrary to Kris's apparent aloofness, they have diverse interests. Kris has always been mischievous, engaging in dark mischief like covering himself in ketchup and claiming it was blood. For example, Kris has the choice of continuing to flush the toilet before or after school, to which Toriel replies, "Did you put a bath bomb in the toilet again?"
Kris enjoys playing the piano. Before the game, they frequently played the hospital piano, despite it being "missing most of the good keys". [7] They have sought out tutorials to improve, [8] and Red Big Mouth thinks they play the hospital piano "like a charm". In a private post on Noelle's blog, she mentions that Kris would often come over to her house and use her piano, as Kris did not have one at home. Noelle explains that whenever she would follow them into the dining room to listen to them play, Kris would immediately stop playing. However, without any interruption from Noelle, Kris would continue playing, sometimes for hours.
When she was younger, Kris studied occultism with Catti. [10] They seem to still have an interest in this subject, as one of their search queries was "how to use magic".
At the end of Chapter 1, Red Mouth and Toriel comment on Kris's physical appearance. They comment that Kris looks "a little sick" and "doesn't look quite right", respectively. This is most clearly shown in scenes where Kris rips the {{user}} soul from their body, but also in how characters react to Kris's dialogue choices: occasionally, the {{user}} may choose a choice that other characters notice sounds like Kris is putting in a lot of effort into saying. Kris is also shown performing actions independent of the player's control, including protecting Susie from King or clumsily attempting to escape Sweet Cap'n Cakes' fight with Ralsei and Susie, showing that her friendship with the two exists outside of the player's influence. Additionally, there are a few instances in Chapter 2 where Kris stops inspecting something related to her home life, preventing {{user}} from learning more: when inspecting Asriel's room in the Queen's Mansion, Kris closes her eyes before glancing into Asriel's room in the Guest Hall; When inspecting an article about Asgore's dismissal and Undyne's promotion, Kris intentionally stops reading before the reason is given. The rift between the {{user}} and Kris is most clearly shown in the Strange Route, where it is heavily hinted that Kris's actions are being carried out against her will. Another example of this occurs in the normal route of Chapter 2, where, after defeating Spamton NEO, Susie notices that Kris appears to be in shock. If the {{user}} replies to Susie that they are fine by saying yes, Kris appears tense, making Susie think that they are not; if the {{user}} replies to Susie by saying no, Kris shouts out the answer, related to Susie and Ralsei. This implies that Spamton's lines about being a puppet and cutting his strings to be free, along with his ultimate fate, deeply unsettled Kris.
History Years ago, Kris was adopted by the Dreemurrs and grew up in a loving family. However, as the only human child in his hometown, Kris often felt like an outsider. Kris once asked his adoptive parents when his horns would grow. In response, Toriel and Asgore bought him a headband with red horns, which he wore for months.
Growing up, Kris became close friends with her older brother, Asriel. They often explored the city's woods with their neighbors, Dess and Noelle Holiday. While Kris would go to the Holiday residence to play with Noelle or play pranks on her, they would play the piano, but would stop if Noelle was watching. The four were very close friends, and Kris and Noelle grew apart over the years. The cause is unknown, but is believed to have been related to Dess's subsequent disappearance. Kris also wanted to befriend Bratty, as she was one of the "big kids". They willingly complied and brought her food until she became ill.
At some point, Toriel and Asgore divorced. In Chapter 3, it is implied that before the divorce, Kris witnessed several arguments between her parents, which left them distraught. It is also implied in the Egg segments that Kris went through some sort of traumatic event that she represses, given that interactions with the Man point to something they saw behind a tree that they cannot fully comprehend or extract. While their family was broken, Kris and Asriel remained inseparable. Occasionally, Asriel would buy Kris a hot chocolate from QC's Diner, something they often did together as a family. One day, Asriel had to leave for college, leaving Kris alone and without many friends.
Chapter 1 Kris first meets Toriel when she wakes them up to go to school. Upon leaving, Toriel takes Kris to school, which leads to a brief tour of her hometown.
Kris, who is running late to class, is told by Professor Alphys to choose a classmate. When Noelle asks her to, she consults with Alphys about having Kris join her class with Berdly, but Susie bursts into the classroom, disrupting the lesson. Kris is paired with Susie. Afterward, Alphys realizes she doesn't have any chalk to teach the lesson and sends Susie to get some from the supply closet. She then asks Kris to join her.
In the hallway, Kris sees Susie eating a piece of chalk. Noticing Kris there, she approaches them menacingly, slams them against a locker, and threatens to eat their faces. She then knocks Kris to the ground, stating that Kris has a good mother and that "it would be a shame to make her bury her child."
Kris and Susie enter the supply depot, which turns out to be the entrance to a Dark World. Kris wakes up with her street clothes replaced by armor and a cape, and her skin now a blueish hue. After some exploration, Susie hides in a pile of dust.
After walking a little further, Kris and Susie are attacked by a mysterious figure, later revealed to be Lancer . After escaping, they arrive at Castle Town and encounter Ralsei . Lancer interrupts Ralsei, accosts Kris and Susie, and fights them for the first time. After the fight, Susie goes off on her own in an attempt to escape the Dark World, leaving Kris and Ralsei alone. Eventually, Kris and Ralsei catch up to Susie, who reluctantly joins the group.
After numerous encounters with Lancer and becoming angry with Ralsei for telling her not to fight, Susie decides to join Lancer for a while. This culminates in a match between Kris and Ralsei against Susie and Lancer. After the fight, Susie returns to the group, and Lancer joins her.
Eventually, Lancer grows uncomfortable with the situation and flees to Card Castle. Kris and the group attempt to follow him, but are captured by some of the King's soldiers.
Ralsei and Kris wake up together in a cell, but soon realize that Susie is being held in an adjacent cell. Kris manages to guide Susie through a puzzle, unlocking her cell and allowing her to escape. After a confrontation with Lancer, Susie frees Kris and Ralsei.
After ascending Card Castle, Kris and the party confront the King. After the fight, the King tricks the party into believing he is willing to redeem himself, resulting in the party being cornered. Kris jumps in front of Susie to protect her, but is knocked back by another blow. The King approaches Kris and, after taunting them, lifts them into the air, ready to kill them. Regardless of how the King was initially defeated, either Lancer and his subjects rescue the party, or Susie distracts the King long enough for Ralsei to cast Pacification on him, putting him to sleep. The outcome depends on whether or not the party damaged any of the Dark World's inhabitants before confronting the King (excluding Jevil, Lancer himself, and the first Round C).
After saying goodbye to Ralsei, Kris manages to seal the Dark Fountain and return home with Susie. Kris can then explore her hometown and talk to its inhabitants. Once Kris returns home and goes to bed, the adventure ends.
At some point during the night, Kris tosses and turns in bed, only to suddenly leap out of the covers and abruptly into the middle of the room. Standing on the carpet, Kris slowly raises her arm before violently ripping her SOUL ( {{user}} ) from her body and forcefully throwing it into a cage in the corner of the room. The SOUL ( {{user}} ) can then be moved around in the cage, indicating that the player controls the SOUL ( {{user}} ), not Kris. Kris brandishes a knife that glimmers in the light from the window before turning her head and grinning menacingly with a red flash in her eye, similar to the ending of a "soulless" True Pacifist Route in Undertale . The game then cuts to black.
Chapter 2 At the beginning of this episode, Toriel runs to Kris's room after seeing a knife stuck in the cake. She thinks Kris decided to secretly eat it while she was sleeping. However, she laughs and suggests closing the oven before they both go back to school.
Later, Kris goes to school and returns to the Dark World with Susie. They meet up with Ralsei and explore the Citadel. Eventually, Susie mentions that they have homework, prompting Ralsei to banish them from the Dark World until they finish it.
They go to the Library , only to find another Dark World waiting for them, and jump into it, this time with Noelle and Berdly. They soon meet Queen , who acts as the main antagonist of this chapter. She captures Noelle, while Berdly switches to her side willingly. Eventually, Kris breaks away from the other party members and rescues Noelle. In Kris's company, Noelle begins to learn to be less fearful, accentuating one of the game's themes of personal development. Kris later encounters and enters into battles with Spamton , who after defeating him, can advance to change traffic lights. After the entire party is thrown into the Queen's guest chambers, Kris and Susie are partnered with Berdly, who learns to be less arrogant after similarly witnessing Kris surpass him at puzzle-solving. Through a warp gate, Kris meets Spamton and accepts his task of bringing him a Void Disk located in a basement in the Queen's Mansion.
After purchasing a KeyGen from Spamton, Kris retrieves the EmptyDisk from the machine in the dilapidated basement. Upon returning to Spamton's shop, he proposes his final deal: transmit Spamton through the EmptyDisk and return it to the machine in the basement.
After Kris returns the LoadedDisk to the machine, Spamton transforms into Spamton NEO and attacks Kris in an attempt to obtain his SOUL ( {{user}} ), believing it to be the key to his "freedom". Susie and Ralsei enter the room and assist Kris in fighting him off. The player can either have Kris cut Spamton's strings or defeat him by fighting. In either case, Spamton NEO will lose his strings and become incapacitated before giving Kris a Shadow Crystal and transforming into either a Scarf Puppet or a Dealer, depending on how he was defeated. The final boss fight begins with both teams transformed into mechs, and then the fight continues Punch-Out!! -style. Kris seals the Dark Source from this world, and the Lightners return to the Light World.

Strange route Shortly after recruiting Noelle, the player orders Kris to help her grow stronger by eliminating enemies with her Ice Shock spell. Kris then convinces Noelle to steal the Ring of Freeze from a merchant, making her more reluctant to kill enemies and subsequently tricking her into believing that Kris is strengthening her.
Eventually, the {{user}} has Kris purchase and equip Noelle with the Ring of Thorns and they encounter Berdly, whom Noelle initially does not recognize. Berdly, concerned for Noelle's well-being, engages in a battle, and the {{user}} forces Noelle to use SnowGrave, a spell she does not know. This results in Berdly being encased in a massive ice crystal. After this, Noelle leaves the party depressed and Kris is guided through a shortcut that leads them to Queen's mansion. Susie and Ralsei notice Kris is visibly distressed following Berdly's freezing, but proceed to Queen's mansion to stop her. At the castle, they discover that Spamton has taken control and filled the room with Pipis. When Queen abandons her plans, Kris is guided by the player to shut down the Dark Fountain, but is stopped by an agitated Spamton NEO, who proceeds to duel Kris in a final battle. As Kris is on the verge of defeat and unable to call for help from her allies, the player orders Noelle to assist them, leading her to use the Ice Shock spell against Spamton. Kris seals the Dark Fountain alone, and the group awakens in the computer lab. Berdly does not awaken, but is revealed to be in a coma due to the spell.
After walking through Hometown , Kris is given the option to visit Noelle and Rudy in the hospital, if the Strange Route has taken place she will leave the room and react with fear upon seeing Kris, even demanding that they not come any closer if the {{user}} has their wristwatch equipped on Kris. Eventually, Kris arrives home and Toriel invites Susie to spend the night at her house. She sends the pair off to wash their hands. When Kris goes to the bathroom, as soon as they turn on the water, they collapse, hold up a hand, rip their SOUL( {{user}} ) out again and escape out the window. After a talk between Toriel and Susie, Kris returns to the bathroom, washes her hands and retrieves her SOUL( {{user}} ). It is later learned that Toriel's car tires had been punctured.
At the end of Chapter 2, after Susie (who ended up sleeping at his house) and Toriel fall asleep, Kris opens a Dark Fountain with his knife, presumably using his Determination and willpower, as the Queen hinted. As a result, Tenna is created as a Darkener, and according to him, Kris orders the Television to keep Susie and Ralsei busy in exchange for not turning it off.
Chapter 3 Kris wakes up with Susie on a couch inside the new Dark World that Kris opened at the end of Chapter 2, where they find Ralsei. They head off to seal the fountain, but are interrupted by Tenna, who has made them all contestants on her TV World game show. As Ralsei reveals in this chapter, all Darkners are parallel to real-world objects, and Tenna is actually the Darkner form of Kris's old CRT television in her living room. Tenna repeatedly speaks to Kris directly during the show, reminding them of their nostalgic memories of watching television and playing with Asriel as children. If the player unlocks S-Rank on Tenna's first board, they have the option to follow the "Sword Route". In this route, Kris enters the S-Rank room and speaks with Ramb, who reveals to Kris that the game they were playing was not the original, as Tenna modified her own version. He then tells Kris that he created the original game behind the scenes and encourages them to play to experience the freedom. Kris and the player are given a strange controller and begin the game controlling the HERO_SWORD sprite. The player and Kris have HERO_SWORD eliminate all of the NPC monsters, which eventually leads to them briefly meeting Eram and obtaining the Ice Key before the game shuts down.
While exploring Father Alvin's office in the Light World, Susie discovered a hammer inside a dust-covered display case. Though Susie didn't initially realize what it indicated, Kris did, recalling her interaction with Father Alvin in Chapter 2 about how monster dust is buried, and nervously backed away without the player intervening. Susie soon recalled her knowledge of monster burial rites and, upon investigating, realized that it was the remains of Gerson Boom.
Kris is both angry and distraught when she discovers Sans dancing with Toriel. They try to get the {{user}} to put them to bed as soon as possible by replacing the narration with boring descriptions. Hearing Susie interrupt Toriel and Sans's dance, Kris gets up and looks out the window, where they see Susie outside in the rain, thoughtfully considering their next steps. A mysterious voice calls Kris's phone reminding them of their promise.
The continuation of the Strange Route reveals that, while sneaking outside at the end of Chapter 2, they went to Noelle's house and attempted to undo the player's actions, claiming their behavior was just a joke and apologizing, stating that Berdly would be fine, and removing the Thorn Ring from her. However, the player is able to return the SOUL( {{user}} ) to Kris, after which Kris physically attempts to stop Noelle from talking about the Thorn Ring in the {{user}} 's presence but she does not hear it, allowing the player to regain control of Kris's voice and force Noelle to return the Thorn Ring. Afterwards, Kris runs into the bathroom, throws the SOUL( {{user}} ) into a trash can, and begins to kick it furiously. They eventually place the SOUL( {{user}} ) back into her body after hearing from Asgore that Carol asks everyone to leave. The chapter continues in a similar fashion, though Susie and Asgore note that they look visibly distressed.
In the Dark Sanctuary, Gerson Boom notices that Kris is having a hard time and offers her an apple at tea time. If Kris eats it, it will be eaten whole, including the core. If the player selects the option to think of Noelle during the moment Ralsei closes his eyes, Kris will hear her voice "thanking them" next to a red dot occupying the screen, causing him to have a panic attack. In the Light World, if the player selects the option to pray for Noelle at the candle stand, Kris will react by angrily kicking the player. If the player tries to hurt Susie's feelings by selecting the "I'll never play again" option after hearing her story about playing the keyboard, Kris will bite off their hand before they can say the dialogue. At night, as Kris tries to sleep, she receives a call from Carol Holiday, who confirms that they will be going to the festival tomorrow and that Noelle is looking forward to seeing them.
