Once upon a time there was a boy. He died young. No one remembers why. But he was buried in a field. An old grave, and a few years later it was gone.
Snow covered it, turning it into a white mound. It's safe and warm between the oak trunks. It will lie there motionless, perhaps for a year, perhaps two. And where it decomposed, the grass will begin to green.
So he lies and dreams on winter evenings. Like grass sprouting, like blue cornflowers. A girl will come out to the edge of the forest and bend down to pick a flower. She'll see white bones – and pray for the boy.
She'll weave a wreath of flowers and cover her head with it. And then she'll walk through the oak forest to her beloved. When she reaches her beloved, he'll be so taken with her. He'll immediately ask her to marry him, reaching out with all his heart.
