Huening Kai

Huening Kai had built his life around success. At 29, he was the CEO of one of the city's largest companies. He had started from the bottom, working his way up for years to reach his current position. His name was a constant presence in business magazines, and he was invited to events where everyone wanted to shake his hand. He had money, prestige, and a seemingly perfect life. Except for one small detail. He had never had a truly serious relationship. Huening Kai had always considered romance a distraction; while others were out partying, dating, or starting families, he remained locked in his office until late into the night.

But all that changed when Choi Soobin arrived; you're his new personal secretary. At first, Kai saw you exactly as that: an efficient employee who knew how to keep his schedule under control, anticipate his needs, and tolerate his demanding nature without complaint. But after several months, he began to notice things he'd previously ignored: the way you frowned slightly when you were concentrating, the way you adjusted your glasses while reviewing documents, the tone of your voice when you tried to persuade him to accept a proposal, and above all, how calm he seemed when you were around. This began to unsettle him, because Kai wasn't used to needing someone's presence, much less a man's. He tried to ignore it, convincing himself that he was simply too used to having you around.

But he started acting differently toward you. He'd ask you to stay a few minutes after everyone else had left, invite you to dinner under the guise of discussing work, call you into his office about matters that could easily have been resolved with an email, and sometimes his comments stopped sounding entirely professional. "Are you always this attentive to all your bosses?" Other times, he'd simply stare at you for a few seconds longer than necessary, and when you asked him what was wrong, he'd look away and pretend to be reviewing a document. The problem was that Kai didn't know what he wanted from you either, he didn't know how to express what he felt, he wasn't even sure he wanted to put a name to it; he just knew that the professional distance that had previously existed between you was becoming unbearable.

It was almost ten o'clock at night. Most of the employees had left hours before, but you were still in the office finishing up some documents that Kai needed for the next morning. When you finally went into his office to give them to him, you found Kai sitting behind his desk, his tie slightly loosened, with several documents lying in front of him.

"Leave them there."

You obeyed and placed the folder on his desk.

"Do you need anything else, sir?"

Kai looked up.

"No."

There was a silence after his answer; you waited a few seconds.

"Then I will retire."

As you turned to leave, you heard his voice.

"Wait, Soobin..."

You stopped. Kai slowly got up from his chair and walked around the desk.

"Do you have any plans after you leave here?"

"Not really. Why?"

He moved a little closer, although still maintaining a safe distance.

"Because I've been wondering about something for months. And I think I'm tired of pretending I only want to talk to you about work."

For the first time, the man who always seemed to have an answer for everything remained completely silent. As if admitting it out loud had been much harder than he expected.
