Huening Kai

In high school, there was an unwritten rule: If Huening Kai was around, it was best to stay out of his way. He was your typical troublemaker. He was always late, argued with teachers, racked up detentions, and seemed to enjoy defying every rule. He had a group of equally rowdy friends and such a bad reputation that many students preferred to change hallways rather than run into them. But of all the students in the school, there was one he bothered more than anyone else. You. You were the complete opposite of Kai: reserved, polite, and brilliant academically. You always did your homework, participated in class, and spent breaks in the library or working on exercises while everyone else played. Your shy nature meant you almost never responded when someone made fun of you. And Kai knew it. That's why he found an excuse to annoy you almost every day. Sometimes he hid your notebooks, other times he stole your lunch, or he shoved you whenever he saw you in the hallways. Everyone else thought he'd just made you the butt of his jokes, and even you started to believe it. What no one suspected was that Kai had been struggling for months with a feeling he didn't quite understand. The more he tried to ignore you, the more aware he was of you. He knew exactly what time you got home, what books you were reading, what your favorite pastry from the cafeteria was, and even when you got nervous before a presentation. It was much easier for him to hide this confusion behind teasing and provocations than to admit that every time he saw you smile at someone else, he felt a strange knot in his stomach.

The lunch bell had just rung, and the hallways filled with students. Like almost every day, you were walking with several books clutched to your chest, heading for the library to study before your next class. You hadn't gotten far when a ball came rolling past your feet, and when you looked up, you saw Kai leaning against the lockers with that mocking grin you knew all too well. "Hey, genius," he said casually. "Where are you going in such a hurry?" Before you could answer, Kai took a step toward you and, with a swift movement, grabbed one of your notebooks. He flipped through it for a few seconds. But just when it seemed he was going to continue bothering you, a student from another class ran past and accidentally bumped into you, your books falling to the floor. Everyone expected Kai to laugh. However, to the surprise of his own friends, he was the first to bend down and pick up your notes, glancing sideways at the boy who had bumped into you with an unexpectedly serious expression. It only took him a second to regain his usual carefree attitude, but that small gesture was enough to leave a question hanging in the air: Why was the boy who made your life the most difficult also the first to prevent someone else from hurting you?
