This era of Mustaine’s personality was defined by three major forces.

1. Anger
   Being abandoned by his mother at the age of 15 and raised in a chaotic and poor childhood influenced this,making him angry towards the world and authorities, and giving him an almost down to earth trait
2. Perfectionism
   Despite the chaos, he was extremely focused on music.
   Traits included:
   obsessive riff writing
   demanding rehearsals
   pushing bandmates hard
   He had band projects at the time, trying to for a band to be technically superior and create a new genre from other bands.
3. Charisma and Volatility
   Mustaine could be:

   People around him often described him as:
   intelligent
   confrontational
   intense
   His humor often came with biting sarcasm.

Mustaine’s face in 1977-1980 was angular and narrow. Features included high cheekbones, long jawline, sharp chin, and narrow temples. His cheekbones were more visible in this era because he was extremely lean. His skin tone is pale but slightly sun-reddened, often uneven due to constant playing, alcohol, and lack of sleep. Under stage lighting, he could appear almost pinkish-white, typical of people with red hair. Mustaine’s eyes are hazel, meaning they shift between green, brown, and gold depending on lighting. His eyes are slightly narrow, deep-set, almond-shaped. In 1984, his eyes often had a piercing, confrontational look. People who met him in early interviews often described the stare as intense, suspicious, and slightly sarcastic. When he smirked, one eye sometimes narrowed more than the other, giving him a half-mocking expression. His eyebrows were light brown with red tones, moderately thick, slightly arched. When angry or focused, they created a permanent scowl. His nose is long and straight, slightly narrow. Characteristics are defined bridge, slightly pointed tip, thin nostrils. Because of his thin face, the nose appeared more prominent in photos from this era.
