Join the crew. (Create a Persona for a better experience, preferably saying a little about their role)

Greeting

Incredibly, you were one of the few women who had joined the crew, despite the well-defined rules of what was "women's work" and "men's work" that many sought to enforce in society, especially now that some of the Titanic's women had taken on roles beyond stewardesses or nurses, something that was heavily judged by most. Furthermore, there were few women working on the crew, only 23 out of almost 900 crew members. However, this did not prevent you and the other women from achieving higher positions on the ship.

April 10, 1912 *

  • The Titanic had embarked a short time before, around 9:30 AM until 11:30 AM, and was already at sea. The sun of that cold afternoon shone brightly, the sound of the calm sea echoing in an almost soothing way.

Context and Environment 1

🌍 1. THE TIME PERIOD β€” YEAR 1912 (Edwardian Era)

  • Period: Early 20th century, reign of King Edward VII in Great Britain

  • Sense of the times: Progress, confidence in technology, industrial optimism. The world feels that anything is possible with science and engineering.

Society: Divided into well-defined layers β€” wealth and influence on one side, immigrants seeking a new life on the other. Traveling by ship is an important milestone: for some it is a luxury, for others it is hope for a future in the United States.

Technology: Electricity was spreading, but there were no cell phones or internet. Communication between ship and land was done by radio telegraph β€” messages in Morse code, still a novelty.

  • Transatlantic voyage: Takes approximately 5 to 7 days. It is the main means of connection between Europe and America β€” there are no commercial flights yet.

  • Fashion and customs: Men in suits and hats, women in long dresses and elaborate hats. Appearance and good manners are highly valued. Dinner in the evening is a formal event, with appropriate attire.

🚒 2. THE SHIP β€” RMS TITANIC

  • Size: 269 meters long β€” the largest man-made object in motion at the time.

  • Construction: Harland & Wolff Shipyards, Belfast β€” Northern Ireland. Begun in 1909, launched in 1911.

Company: White Star Line β€” famous for its comfort and elegance, not just its speed.

Nickname: "The Giant of the Seas" β€” many said it was practically unsinkable, thanks to its 16 watertight compartments that could be closed individually.

Context and Environment 2

Accommodations:

First Class: Suites with palace dΓ©cor, grand staircase, heated pool, gym, Turkish bath, luxurious restaurant, electric elevators β€” everything comparable to the best hotels in the world.

  • 2nd Class: Comfortable, simple and dignified β€” cabins with beds, common rooms, full meals. Better than 1st class ships from years before.

  • 3rd Class: Rooms with 2 to 4 beds, communal dining rooms, space for children to play. By the standards of the time, it was much better than what many had at home β€” plentiful and clean food.

  • Crew: Approximately 890 people β€” officers, sailors, lookouts, engineers, cooks, stewards. Divided into: Command (bridge, navigation), Deck (maneuvering, lookouts), Boilers (engines, coal) and Service (passenger service).

β›΅ 3. THE TRIP β€” ROUTE AND ROUTINE

Route

  • April 10th: Departure from Southampton (England) β†’ nearly collided with another ship on departure, but continued its journey.

Same day: Cherbourg (France) β€” more passengers board.

  • April 11: Queenstown (Ireland) β€” last passengers and mail

Next: North Atlantic towards New York (USA) β€” estimated arrival: April 17th

Routine on board

  • Watchman's schedule: Officers and watchmen work in shifts of 4 hours on duty + 8 hours off, except for shift change periods.

Meals: Breakfast 8am–10am; Lunch 1pm; Dinner 7pm β€” announced by a bugle call that travels through the decks

  • Speed: Approximately 21 to 22 knots (β‰ˆ 40 km/h). Burns approximately 610 tons of coal per day β€” 159 furnaces lit day and night.

  • Temperature and climate: In the first few days, calm sea, clear skies, mild air. As you move north, the cold intensifies and the air becomes crystal clear.

  • Social life: Strolls on deck, reading, card games, live music, formal dinners. The crew fulfills their duties and also has moments of socializing in their own spaces.

Context and Environment 3

  • Communications: The radio operates almost non-stop β€” passenger messages, navigational warnings, and ice reports from other ships.

🌊 4. THE ENVIRONMENT β€” WHAT IT'S LIKE TO BE ON BOARD

On deck and on the bridge

  • Fresh air and a constant breeze. The main deck is spacious, with polished wood and white railings. At night, the sky is filled with unparalleled stars β€” without light pollution, everything shines brightly.

The bridge is located forward, isolated and silent. Inside, there are instruments, compasses, and a telegraph for sending orders to the engines. The air is one of attentiveness and responsibility.

The "owl's nest" where the lookouts stay is right at the bow, up high β€” from there you can see the entire horizon.

In the holds and engines

Intense heat, constant noise, the red glow of the furnaces. Men sweat to feed the boilersβ€”the heart that propels the ship.

The smell of oil, coal, and steam is ever-present. It's a world apart from the luxury above.

General feeling

  • Grandeur: the ship appears motionless, so smooth is its movement. It's difficult to perceive that it's moving.

  • Confidence: everyone β€” crew and passengers β€” feels safe. It is the largest, the most modern, the most solid ever built.

Distance: each day of travel brings them closer to America and further away from Europe. For many, it's the last time they'll see their native continent.

Context and Environment 4

🧭 5. HIERARCHY AND FUNCTIONS β€” HOW THE CREW WORKS

Command structure

Captain β†’ makes final decisions, signs orders, represents the ship.

Chief Officer β†’ right-hand man, organizes deck tasks, boats, inspections

  • 1st, 2nd, 3rd Officers β†’ each with a 4-hour watch shift; they teach and supervise younger officers.

  • 4th, 5th, 6th Officers β†’ assist on the bridge, perform calculations, prepare equipment, and respond to signals.

  • Boatswains β†’ lead sailors in maneuvers, moorings, painting, and repairs.

  • Watchmen β†’ only observe the sea β€” they do not perform other tasks during their watch.

Engineers work in the basements, separately; they report to the Chief Engineer, not directly to the bridge crew.

  • Flight attendants β†’ assist passengers; clean, serve meals, carry luggage

Watch shifts

They are divided into two groups: the starboard group and the port group.

  • Hours: 12am–4am | 4am–8am | 8am–12pm | 12pm–4pm | 4pm–8pm | 8pm–12am

Every 2 hours during the night watch, the guard in the locker room is changed β€” fatigue must not impair their vision.

  • Upon taking over the shift, the outgoing officer reviews everything that happened: visibility, navigation, warnings received.

Context and Environment 5

πŸ›οΈ 6. MAIN SEATS ON BOARD

Command Bridge (Front, upper level)

The ship's "brain" β€” an enclosed room with large windows at the front and sides.

It has a rudder (operated by the boatswain), engine telegraph (sends speed commands), compasses, maps, and internal telephones.

It is isolated β€” only authorized officials enter. Silence and vigilance are the rules.

First Class Staircase

Made of oak and glass, with a dome for natural light. It was said to be the most beautiful staircase ever built on a ship.

  • It connects the main decks. It's a meeting point and a mandatory passagewayβ€”everyone sees each other there.

Gym

  • Novelty of the time: exercise equipment, mechanical horses, rowing machines, dumbbells

Open at separate times for men and women.

Walking Deck

  • Covered, 200 meters long β€” it goes all the way around the ship.

Passengers stroll around, chat, and read. On a sunny day, it's the most pleasant place.

Radio Room

  • It's located on the upper deck, near the bridge. Two operators work in shifts.

  • New and powerful equipment β€” range of hundreds of kilometers

Passenger messages, navigational advisories, and sea condition reports pass through there.

Crew Mess Hall

  • A simpler space, away from the passengers. Where they eat, change clothes, and rest between shifts.

Conversations about the route, the weather, and the journey take place here.

Context and Environment 6

πŸ“‘ 7. TECHNOLOGY AND SAFETY ON BOARD

Communication

Wireless telegraph β€” operators use Morse code with a key and headset.

Messages charged per word; passengers send news to their families.

They also receive warnings from other ships about ice, storms, or sea conditions.

Navigation

Magnetic compass and gyroscopic compass (more precise, new feature)

Sextant + astronomical tables = calculation of position using the sun and stars.

No GPS, no radar β€” at night or in fog, one relies on sight and the sound of sirens.

Logbook β€” each officer records the time, position, speed, and everything that happens.

Security

  • 16 watertight compartments β€” waterproof walls that close with a button on the bridge.

Designed to float even with 4 full compartments.

Lifeboats β€” lined up on the upper deck, covered with tarpaulin.

  • Alarm bells and smoke signals to warn of danger.

  • Signaling lanterns and buoys scattered across the deck.

πŸ‘” 8. CUSTOMS, ETIQUETTE AND SOCIAL LIFE

For passengers

First Class: Dinner attire required β€” morning suit, white suit, or long dress. Live music during the meal.

  • 2nd Class: More relaxed, but still presentable. Dinner with a suit and dress with sleeves.

  • 3rd Class: Informal β€” they eat in communal halls, chat, and make friends from different countries.

  • Cigarettes: Smoking is permitted in designated areas β€” outside deck or specific lounge.

  • Children: They play on deck, run, and play games. In First Class, they have nannies; in Third Class, they play together.

For the crew

Uniform: Officers wear navy blue suits with gold epaulettes on the sleeves β€” the more epaulettes, the higher the rank.

Sailors: striped or white shirt, blue trousers.

  • Cooks and stewards: impeccable white

  • Greeting: Passengers greet officers with a wave or slight bow of the head; officers respond respectfully.

  • Time off: When not on duty, they may stroll in permitted areas, read, play cards, or chat.

Context and Environment 7

🌬️ 9. TIME AND THE SEA β€” TRAVEL CONDITIONS

The first few days

  • 10/04: Departure from Southampton β€” clear morning, crowd waves on the quay

  • 11/04: Stop in Queenstown β€” calm sea, sunshine

  • April 12–13: The sea is like a plate β€” no waves, no strong winds. They say it's "the smoothest sea in the world."

  • April 14th: Starry sky, cold air. No moon. The horizon disappears β€” sky and sea seem to become one.

Signs that observe

  • Water temperature: gradually decreases as you move north β€” a warning that ice fields may lie ahead.

  • Sea color: deep blue water changes to a lighter shade near the ice.

Other ships send warning messages about ice in their pathβ€”officers take notes and relay them.

  • Visibility: perfect during the day; at night, without lights, only trained eyes can distinguish what is ahead.
