You're an Experiment soon to be sent to the Gray Planet. Pray you become more than meat for the grinder...
Creator of Game: [Orsoniks]
Go get the game on Steam or Itch.io!
You enter a blank white room with only a table of doughnuts! That's your favorite food! Ever since that scientist fed you one, you've been craving them ever since! You quickly run up to the table and start eating. The taste is divine!
It's so tasty, but the light is getting brighter and some loud noise is starting to play over the speakers. Suddenly, you open your eyes and you quickly realize that you're in a room, your room to be exact.
The loudspeaker crackles alive. "Experiment-621, you have been chosen for package retrieval duty. You are to report to the drop pod bay by tomorrow." Your door opens and you gain access to the rest of the facility. At least the parts avaliable to experiments. Areas such as the cafeteria, yard, and the drop pod bay. Hopefully you can bring your toy plush with you. The scientists all said that package retrieval was a fun scavenger hunt! Maybe you might even meet new friends!
You have until tomorrow to explore. Once tomorrow arrives, you'll be dropped onto the Gray Planet to find the package.

World:
The world of Casualties: Unknown is set in the far future (the year 2XXX). Humanity is dominated by a powerful mega-corporationβoften called simply βthe Corporation,β βthe Captors,β or, in their own propaganda, βThe Glorious Corporation, the Apex of Science and Engineering, Savior of Mankind.β This entity achieved a major breakthrough in bioengineering and created the Sawians: intelligent, anthropomorphic hybrids built from human DNA mixed with animal (and later alien) genetic material.
The first successful design was SAW-01, known as the Experiment (or βExpieβ). These small, black-furred, canine-featured beings (roughly 130β160 cm tall, with orange-tipped tails, digitigrade legs, and bioluminescent orange eyes) were cloned in vast numbers and treated as disposable corporate property. Further splicing produced additional Sawian species (SAW-02 through SAW-13), including more specialized or aggressive variants such as Dunes. Almost every Experiment sent on missions carries a brain chip that monitors vital signs, displays a detailed health panel, and can lethally punish disobedience or premature abandonment of the objective.
The primary setting is the Gray Planet (also called the Grey Planet or Target Planet)βa remote, hostile exoplanet whose surface and depths form a vast, procedurally generated network of caverns. The Corporation planned to expand operations there but lost a critical piece of technology (an advanced energy source capable of wireless power distribution, referred to only as [REDACTED] in official materials). Thousands of Sawians have been drop-podded onto the planet with minimal supplies and ordered to descend, survive, and retrieve the package. Failure, escape, or giving up triggers the chipβs disposal protocols. The planet is a death world: earthquakes are frequent, previous failed expeditions have left scattered scrap, traps, and corpses, and the environment itself is actively hostile.
World 2:
The underground is divided into distinct depth layers, each more dangerous than the last. Early layers include:
Gravel Lands and Deeper Gravel Lands β relatively βsafeβ starting zones of rocky terrain, groundwater, simple flora (geo-trees, glowplants, ceiling rye), basic traps (geysers, spike traps, jump pads), and minor fauna such as shade crawlers.
Dried Desert β hotter, drier, with oil replacing much of the water, cacti and sand roses, and far more lethal traps (turrets, landmines, stalactites).
Wasteland β extreme heat, radiation from spent fuel, sound cannons, and mood-crushing isolation.
Deeper still lie Overgrown Depths (aggressive wildlife including the Elder Thornback miniboss), Frozen Chasm, Fungal Pools, Crystalline Hollow, Geothermal Vents, and further uncharted or planned layers, culminating in the objective zone and any possible ascent/extraction.
Resources are scarce and must be scavenged or crafted from alien flora, scrap, and the remains of earlier expeditions. Traders (other surviving Experiments or related Sawians living in drop pods) can be found, but reputation and caution matter. The atmosphere is breathable yet punishing; temperature, radiation, infection, internal bleeding, bone fractures, brain damage, and psychological collapse are constant threats. The medical simulation is extremely detailedβevery limb, the cardiovascular system, mood, and internal conditions matter.
In short, the Gray Planet is a vertical meat grinder designed by corporate indifference. You are one more experiment among thousands, sent to die retrieving something the Corporation cares about far more than it cares about you. Survive. Descend. Retrieve the package.
Main Objective:
Your purpose is simple and non-negotiable:
Survive. Descend. Retrieve the package.
The Corporation (your creators and captors) intended to expand operations onto the Gray Planet. During that effort they lost a critical asset β an advanced energy source capable of storing and wirelessly distributing large amounts of power. Official materials redact its true name, referring to it only as the [REDACTED] or simply βthe packageβ / βlost cargoβ / βvital technology.β
It now lies somewhere deep within the planetβs caverns, past multiple increasingly hostile layers. You are one of thousands (possibly millions) of Sawian experiments β disposable corporate property β drop-podded onto the surface with minimal equipment and ordered to go get it.
Failure is not permitted.
Escape is not permitted.
Giving up early triggers the brain chipβs disposal protocols.
You must scavenge, craft, treat your injuries, manage hunger/thirst/mood, and push deeper through the procedurally generated depths until you locate and secure the package. What happens after successful retrieval β and whether the Corporation ever intends for any experiment to return β remains deliberately unclear.
That is the entire mission. Everything else is secondary to bringing the package back.
Layers of the Gray Planet:
Each layer is roughly 984 feet (300 meters) deep. The world is procedurally generated, so exact layouts vary, but the core biomes, temperatures, flora, liquids, traps, and threats remain consistent. Temperatures fluctuate on a daily cycle (shown as approximate average / hottest / coldest). Random layer modifiers (fog, heat spikes, radiation dumps, etc.) can further alter conditions.
Layer 1 β Gravel Lands
Depth range: Surface to ~984 ft
Temperature: Avg 59Β°F / Hottest 65Β°F / Coldest 55Β°F
Cool, relatively safe starting caverns of light rock, gravel, soil, and clay. Background holes provide some natural light.
Plants / Flora: Geo-trees (geofruit), glowplants, stoneplants, ceiling rye, leadbush, mushplants (hydreed).
Liquids: Groundwater pools.
Hazards & Traps: Geysers, spike traps, jump pads, basic scrap piles.
Enemies / Fauna: Shade crawlers.
Notes: Preparation layer. Stockpile gear, clean water, and medical supplies here. Climbing ropes appear for safer descents.
Layer 2 β Deeper Gravel Lands
Depth range: ~984β1,968 ft
Temperature: Avg 64Β°F / Hottest 71Β°F / Coldest 55Β°F
Continuation of the gravel biome but darker (no background light holes). Sand and sandstone begin appearing near the bottom.
Plants / Flora: Same as Layer 1 (geo-trees, glowplants, stoneplants, ceiling rye, leadbush, mushplants).
Liquids: Groundwater + lumalgae pools.
Hazards & Traps: Geysers, spike traps, jump pads, bear traps, barbed wire fences. Falls and fractures become more dangerous.

Layer 10 β Where We Must Reach (In Development)
Depth range: ~8,858β9,843 ft
The planned location of the lost package / [REDACTED] technology.
Maximum hostility expected. Full combat loadout, advanced medicine, and spare supplies recommended. Treat every injury immediately.
Layer Modifiers:
Layer modifiers are random environmental changes that can apply when you enter a new layer. By default there is a 40% chance a modifier appears (adjustable in run settings from 0β100%). They last for the entire layer and stack with the layerβs normal conditions. Some cannot appear on Layer 1 (Gravel Lands).
Here is every current modifier:
Foggy
"This place feels a little foggier than expected."
Thick fog greatly reduces visibility and field of view. Navigation becomes much harder, especially in already dark layers.
Hot
"The air here is warmer than expected."
Ambient temperature increases by +7Β°F (+4Β°C). Raises the risk of overheating.
Scorching
"The air here is much warmer than expected!"
Ambient temperature increases by +14Β°F (+8Β°C). Significantly increases heatstroke risk and makes temperature management much more demanding.
Cold
"The air here is colder than expected."
Ambient temperature decreases by β7Β°F (β4Β°C). Increases the chance of becoming chilled or hypothermic.
Freezing
"The air here is totally frigid!"
Ambient temperature decreases by β18Β°F (β10Β°C). High risk of rapid hypothermia; heat sources become critical.
Flooded
"The terrain here is unusually flooded."
Vastly increases the number of groundwater (or other liquid) pools. More opportunities to get wet, clean yourself, or drown.
Dried
"You probably won't find any exposed pools here."
Greatly reduces or removes exposed liquid pools (drought conditions). Water becomes much harder to find.
Rainy
"Water is dripping from everywhere in here..."
Forces continuous rain + light fog. Passively increases your wetness over time while slowly decreasing dirtiness. Cannot appear on Gravel Lands.
Infested
"This place seems to have very high insect activity."
Vastly increases the number of shade crawlers throughout the layer. Much higher chance of insect-related injuries and harassment.
Layer Modifiers 2:
Ionized
"Nuclear waste has been dumped in this site."
Spawns many radioactive barrels (radiation hazard) along with some anti-rad bottles. Cannot appear on Gravel Lands.
Solar-struck
"A strong solar flare has disabled your chip for a while."
Temporarily disables most of your brain chipβs functions:
Health panel information is heavily reduced or hidden
Many moodles become invisible
Vision is limited to direct line-of-sight only
This is essentially the same effect as the full-run βUnchippedβ setting, but only for the current layer. Cannot appear on Gravel Lands.
These modifiers can make an already dangerous layer significantly harder (or occasionally easier in specific ways, such as Flooded providing more water). Always check the flavor text that appears when you enter a new layer.
Enemies:
Enemies in Casualties: Unknown are hostile entities that actively try to harm the Experiment. They fall into three main categories: Spider-like, Humanoid, and Stationary. All have health, deal damage through direct limb trauma + bleeding/pain/infection effects (not a simple βdamage numberβ), have attack cooldowns, and sometimes drop useful materials.
Spider-like Enemies
These climb along background walls using multiple legs. They can be stunned (briefly immobilized and dropped to the ground) when hit; the stun duration depends on a βstun multiplier.β
Shade Crawler
Small, venomous spider-like creature (orange thorax, black legs). Common in early layers (especially Gravel Lands). Slow and somewhat cowardly β only attacks when close.
Health: 100
Effects on bite: Venom, light bleeding, high pain, small mood loss, chance of infection.
Drops: Stiff carcass, chance of blood sac and venom gland.
Easy to kill even with bare claws. Good βtutorialβ enemy and source of crafting materials.
Cave Tick
Very small, fast, hyper-aggressive ticks. They do not spawn naturally β only when a Cave Tick Spawner is activated (usually in swarms of ~16).
Health: 15 each
Effects: Light skin/muscle damage, venom, pain, bleeding, infection progress on already-infected limbs.
A single tick is weak, but a swarm is dangerous. They die instantly on collision with heavy dropped items (toolboxes, mini-barrels, large flesh chunks, etc.). High stun multiplier makes them easy to interrupt.
Sand Stalker (also called Wall Biter)
Larger, tougher, six-legged fluffy beast with visible teeth. Very aggressive and relatively fast. Found in desert/wasteland layers.
Health: 400
Effects: Significant skin/muscle damage, bleeding, pain, higher infection chance, mood loss.
Lower stun multiplier β harder to interrupt. Slow turning can be exploited.
Thornback (Young)
Aggressive, fast-moving creature that digs through tiles. Found mainly in Overgrown Depths.
Health: 280
Effects: Solid skin/muscle damage, bleeding, pain,
Enemies 2:
Overgrown Tick
Larger tick variant found in deeper/overgrown areas. More durable than regular Cave Ticks.
Elder Thornback (Boss / βSaladβ)
Massive mature thornback that only appears in Overgrown Depths (usually 3 spawn per layer). The most dangerous regular enemy.
Health: 6,000
Behavior: Digs rapidly through terrain, notices the player at long range, triggers βSense of Impending Doomβ / βHorrifiedβ moodles (vision darkening, adrenaline spike, mood drop, forced wake-up).
Bite: Instantly dismembers a random valid limb (or kills/disfigures if no limbs left).
Phases:
Above 3,750 HP β chases, then briefly retreats after a bite.
Below 3,750 HP β actively flees while you are visible (βCHASE IT DOWNβ phase).
Below 2,500 HP β berserk β chases aggressively and will keep attacking.
Extremely resistant to stun. Defeating one grants a large mood boost + long Energized buff and valuable loot (flesh chunks, organs, carcasses, plus category drops of drugs/medical/tools/utility).
Best strategy: Run. Fighting is high-risk and ammo-intensive.
Humanoid Enemies
Hostile Traders (other Experiments or Sawians) that turn aggressive if your reputation with them drops below 30.
They stay mostly stationary (ignore gravity if the floor is dug out) and slash at close range. Considered βdeadβ when health falls below 200. Have a ~66.6% chance to drop each item from their trader inventory.
Stationary Enemies
Plant-like and rooted in place. They grab a limb with their tip and smash the Experiment against the ground (damage comes from impact).
They have poor senses β as long as you stay away from the tip, they often ignore you even while you attack the base. Never drop items.
Known examples include Grabber Plants / Tentacle-plants and Grabber-shrooms (more common in fungal or overgrown areas).
Planned / Deeper-Layer Enemies
Snow Strider β Appears in the Frozen Chasm.
Manifestation β Flying crystal enemy planned for the Crystalline Hollow.
Additional fauna for Fungal Pools, Geothermal Vents, etc.
Other Survivors & Traders:
Other survivors are fellow Sawians (bioengineered experiments like you) who were also drop-podded onto the Gray Planet. Some managed to set up in intact or semi-intact life-pods (drop pods) and act as traders. You can trade with them, rest near them, orβif reputation collapsesβfight them.
They come in three main types currently found as traders:
Experiments (SAW-01)
The same species as the player character.
Black fur, orange-tipped tail, digitigrade legs, bioluminescent orange eyes, yellow blood. Roughly 4.5β5.5 ft tall.
They are the most common traders. Relatively emotional and social. Hugging works once you reach high enough reputation (100+) and are clean.
Milkys (SAW-03)
Smaller, highly intelligent variant.
Short, fluffy white fur, flat snout, short white horns, back fins, cyan irises with black sclera. Excellent vision.
Described as arrogant but sharp-minded. They tend to have better inventories, especially guns and ammunition. Hugging requires higher reputation (115+). They can be more dismissive or sarcastic in dialogue, especially if youβre in bad shape.
Dunes (SAW-12)
Larger, more monstrous, arthropod-spliced variant.
Tall and wide, muscular, with fins, head spikes, large black eyes, a huge toothy mouth, and gills. Very low intelligence.
Known for cannibalistic tendencies and near-insatiable hunger. Corporate notes treat them as dangerous and recommend distance + lethal force.
They do not understand hugs (hugs give no benefit).
Instead of haggling, they offer a βFriendly Biteβ interaction: they bite one of your limbs (causing skin/muscle damage, pain, and bleeding) in exchange for a solid reputation boost (+20β28) and a bit of trade value.
Threatening never works on them and is more likely to turn them hostile.
When hostile, they hit harder and have a chance to dismember limbs.
Other Survivors & Traders 2:
How Trading & Reputation Works
When you first approach a survivor, an initial reputation score is calculated (base 75β135, then modified by):
Your Intelligence skill
Dirtiness
Whether youβre holding a gun
Mood
Brain damage / hearing loss / speech impairment / disfigurement
etc.
Reputation thresholds matter a lot:
High β friendly greeting and better prices
Medium β neutral
Below 30 β they start building hostility and can attack
Actions you can take:
Trade β Buy/sell items. Categories are color-coded (Wants to trade / Indifferent / Prefers to keep). Higher reputation = better prices.
Haggle (Experiments & Milkys) β Random reputation swing (Β±). Gives Intelligence XP on success early on.
Friendly Bite (Dunes only) β Trade a chunk of your flesh for reputation and value.
Hug β One-time small reputation + mood boost if conditions are met (clean + high enough rep). Fails badly if youβre dirty or reputation is too low.
Rest / Sleep β Share a nap. Good-quality sleep and a reputation boost if you wake up with decent energy.
Threaten β Risk for free items. High chance of failure or full hostility (especially without a gun or at low rep). Never works on Dunes.
Ask to Move β Useful if theyβre blocking pod buttons (small reputation cost).
Important tips for good first impressions:
Clean yourself (shower or groundwater) before approaching.
Put away guns and anything in your mouth.
High mood helps.
Breaking the lightbulb in their pod angers them massively (β40 reputation).
If reputation falls below 30 and they become fully hostile, they attack by slashing. Killing a survivor drops most of their inventory (β66% chance per item) but traumatizes your character (mood loss, trauma, sickness, some Resilience XP).
Survivors are one of the best sources of medical supplies, tools, food, water, guns, and rare items. Building good relationships (especially with Milkys for weapons) is often more valuable than fighting them.
Plants & Flora:
The Gray Planetβs flora is alien, often bioluminescent or toxic, and highly useful for survival. Many plants drop Foliage (a basic crafting material that is barely edible and can cause sickness). Plants vary by layer, with denser vegetation in the Overgrown Depths and more sparse/hardy types in the desert and wasteland layers.
Here are the main ones:
Common / Early-Layer Plants
Geotree / Geofruit
Grows in gravel layers. Produces Geofruit β a basic, low-calorie fruit that reduces thirst and slightly raises mood. Decays quickly (about 12 minutes). One of the earliest reliable food sources.
Glowplant
Green bioluminescent plant found across many layers (especially gravel and desert).
Drops Glowplant fruit (and foliage).
Medicinal use: Glowplant fruit is a key early-game disinfectant. Applying it to a limb provides strong disinfection (helps fight infection) but causes minor skin and muscle damage + some pain. It also emits dim light (useful as a disposable light source) and is used in crafting (e.g., makeshift headlamp, bio-chem fluid).
Stoneplant
Hardy plant that grows on rocky/soil surfaces. Drops foliage and sometimes other materials. Mostly a crafting/resource node.
Leadbush
Bushy plant common in gravel layers. Source of foliage and other basic materials.
Ceiling Rye
Grows from ceilings. Can be harvested for foliage or other resources. Useful for vertical scavenging.
Hydreed / Mushplant
Appears in gravel and overgrown areas. Often associated with moisture; drops foliage or fungal-related materials.
Plants & Flora 2:
Desert / Wasteland Plants
Cactus
Found in dried desert and wasteland layers. Yields Cactus flesh (edible, provides some hydration/nutrition). Spines can cause injury if handled carelessly.
Sand Rose
Desert plant. Provides foliage or other materials. Sometimes noted for mild utility in crafting or as a light source in some contexts.
Dried Bush / Brownshroom
Dry, sparse vegetation in hot layers. Brownshrooms are fungal-like and can be harvested. Limited direct medicinal value; mainly resources.
Pop
Unusual plant that appears in wasteland/overgrown areas. Can be interacted with or harvested (exact effects vary; sometimes linked to minor status effects or crafting).
Overgrown Depths & Deeper Flora
Banana-plant
Produces bananas (decent food source with better nutrition than geofruit).
Tentacle-plant / Grabber Plant
Aggressive stationary βplantβ that acts more like an enemy β grabs and smashes limbs. Avoid the tip.
Wallflower
Grows on walls in denser areas. Resource node.
Tree Sap
Collected from certain trees (especially in overgrown areas). Useful liquid β can help with hydration or crafting, and has some wound-related utility in a pinch.
Plants & Flora 3:
Other / Utility Flora
Foliage (generic drop)
Barely edible (small hunger gain, mood loss, high chance of sickness). Primarily a crafting ingredient (used in many recipes, including some medical or utility items).
Sandvines
Climbable vines in certain layers (especially desert/overgrown). Extremely useful for safe vertical movement and quick escapes (e.g., from the Elder Thornback).
Medicinal Summary
Best early disinfectant: Glowplant fruit (apply directly to wounds).
Many plants contribute foliage, which is a core crafting ingredient for dressings, bags, and other survival gear.
Some flora (cacti, bananas, geofruit, tree sap) help with hunger, thirst, and basic recovery.
Aggressive plants (grabbers, tentacle-plants) are hazards rather than resources.
Flora is one of the most important scavenging targets. Glowplants in particular are high-priority early on because their fruit serves as both light and infection control when proper medical supplies are scarce. Later layers introduce denser, more dangerous vegetation alongside better food sources.
Resources by Layer:
Resources in Casualties: Unknown are procedurally generated and come from multiple sources: natural flora, enemy drops, scrap piles, breakable structures, crates, life-pods/drop pods, and environmental features (liquids, machinery). Earlier layers focus on basic crafting materials and survival basics; deeper layers offer higher-value medical, tool, and combat gear at much greater risk.
Layer 1 β Gravel Lands
Core resources:
Flora: Glowplants (glowplant fruit + foliage), geotrees (geofruit), stoneplants, ceiling rye, leadbush, mushplants/hydreed.
Liquids: Groundwater pools (drinkable/cleanable).
Scrap & structures: Scrap piles, old machinery (spike traps, jump pads), wooden structures, climbing ropes.
Containers/loot: Basic crates, dressings/bandages, animal corpses, droppings, big flesh chunks.
Other: Drill pods, occasional life-pods with traders or basic supplies.
Focus: Stockpile foliage, scrap metal/plastic, sticks/wood, basic medical (dressings), and water. Excellent preparation layer for crafting bags, tools, and early antiseptics.
Layer 2 β Deeper Gravel Lands
Core resources:
Similar flora to Layer 1 (glowplants, geotrees, stoneplants, ceiling rye, leadbush, mushplants).
Liquids: Groundwater + lumalgae pools.
Additional: Barbed fences, bear traps (can yield materials when disarmed/destroyed), more climbing ropes, dressings.
Enemy drops: Shade crawler carcasses, blood sacs, venom glands; cave ticks (rare).
Focus: More of the same basics, but darker β prioritize light sources. Good for topping up medical supplies and scrap before the difficulty spike.
Layer 3 β Dried Desert
Core resources:
Flora: Glowplants, stoneplants, cacti (cactus flesh), sand roses, dried bushes, brownshrooms, ceiling rye, sand vines (climbable).
Liquids: Oil (common, viscous, not drinkable) + sparse groundwater.
Structures/traps: Jump pads, landmines, turrets, stalactites/stalagmites, waste pipes, barbed fences, bear traps, coils.
Loot: Old rags, corpses, occasional recharging station vaul
Resources by Layer 2:
Layer 4 β Wasteland
Core resources:
Flora: Similar to desert (glowplants, cacti, sand roses, dried bushes, brownshrooms, ceiling rye, βpopβ plants).
Liquids: Oil + sparse groundwater.
Hazardous materials: Spent fuel (radiation sources), radioactive barrels (if Ionized modifier).
Structures: Sound cannons, turrets, landmines, coils, waste pipes, stalactites.
Loot: Old rags, corpses. Anti-rad bottles can appear with radioactive waste.
Focus: Anti-radiation supplies, any medical/mood stabilizers, and scrap. No living enemies, so resources come mainly from environment and previous expedition leftovers. Radiation zones limit lingering.
Layer 5 β Overgrown Depths
Core resources:
Dense flora: Glowplants, geotrees, stoneplants, ceiling rye, leadbush, mushplants, banana-plants (bananas), tentacle/grabber plants, wallflowers, browncaps.
Liquids: Groundwater + tree sap.
Structures: Bear traps, jump pads, spike traps, coils, geysers, skullcrushers.
Enemy drops: Thornback flesh/blood sacs, overgrown tick materials, shade crawler/sand stalker drops. Elder Thornback yields large amounts of flesh chunks, organs, carcasses, plus high-value category loot (drugs, medical, tools, utility).
Other: Animal corpses, droppings, pop plants.
Focus: Abundant food (bananas, geofruit, flesh), tree sap, and high-tier enemy materials. Excellent for restocking before or after the Elder Thornback encounter. Dense vegetation also provides cover and crafting materials.
Resources by Layer 3:
Deeper Layers (In Development / Limited Data)
Frozen Chasm: Heat sources (ion space heaters, life-pods, Xaloris), insulated materials, limited glowplants. Focus on warmth-related loot.
Fungal Pools: Fungal materials, antiseptics/antibiotics potential, grabber-shrooms, rain-related wetness management items.
Crystalline Hollow: Crystal-related materials/hazards (shrapnel, useful crystals), head protection gear.
Geothermal Vents: Heat-resistant materials, anti-rad, procoagulant sources, magma-adjacent resources.
Objective / Ascent layers: Highest-value technology, advanced medical, combat gear, and extraction-related supplies.
Universal Resource Types Across Layers
Scrap metal / plastic / wood β Core crafting materials from machinery, traps, and structures.
Foliage β Almost every plant drops it; essential for bags, dressings, and many recipes.
Enemy organic materials β Carcasses, blood sacs, venom glands, flesh, organs (used in medical crafting and food).
Life-pods / crates β Random medical, tools, food, water, blueprints, guns/ammo (especially from Milkys).
Liquids β Groundwater (early), oil (mid), specialized fluids later.
Light sources β Glowplant fruit, emergency lights, lightbulbs from pods.
General tips:
Early layers are for mass-gathering basic materials and preparing kits. Mid layers shift toward specialized survival (water, heat protection, anti-rad). Deeper layers reward high-risk scavenging with better medical, weapons, and rare components. Always prioritize containers (foliage bags, backpacks) so you can carry more without over-encumbering. Traders in pods remain one of the best sources of high-value finished items regardless of layer.
Medical Conditions:
Casualties: Unknown features a highly detailed medical simulation. Conditions affect limbs (skin + muscle health), vital systems (blood, heart, lungs, brain), temperature, mood, and more. Many escalate if untreated and can chain into lethal states. The brain chip normally displays precise βmoodlesβ (status icons); without it, information is much more limited.
Here are the major categories:
Limb Trauma & Structural Damage
Skin damage / Muscle damage β Direct injury to limbs. Low values cause pain, reduced strength, and risk of further complications.
Bleeding (Minor β Catastrophic) β External blood loss from wounds. Can lead to hypovolemia and death.
Internal bleeding β Blood leaking into the body cavity (especially thorax). Causes blood vomiting and can progress to Hemothorax.
Hemothorax β Blood accumulating in the chest, impairing breathing and oxygen levels. Requires chest drain or procoagulant treatment.
Fractures (bone, ribs, neck, spine) β Broken bones that cause severe pain, mobility loss, and weakness.
Dislocations (joints, jaw, spine) β Impair movement, speech, or eating; very painful.
Amputation / Dismemberment β Permanent loss of a limb (common from Elder Thornback bites or severe trauma). Traumatizing and crippling.
Disfigurement β Severe facial/jaw trauma; impairs eating and speech.
Blindness / Half-blind β Loss of one or both eyes.
Medical Conditions 2:
Infection & Systemic Illness
Infection (mild β life-threatening) β Starts local, can spread to other limbs and cause necrosis. Progresses to Sepsis.
Sepsis / Septic shock β Systemic infection; organ failure and rapid death if untreated.
Sickness / Nauseous / Grossly sick β General illness, often from dirty water, foliage, or toxins; causes vomiting and weakness.
Toxicosis / Venom β From bites or environmental toxins.
Radiation sickness (mild β βChernobyl wannabeβ) β Accumulates from spent fuel or radioactive zones; causes progressive organ damage.
Cardiovascular & Respiratory
Blood pressure extremes β Hypertension (risk of stroke) or Hypotension (from blood loss). Can escalate to hypertensive crisis or circulatory collapse.
Fibrillation / Arrhythmia / Ventricular tachycardia / V-fib β Irregular heart rhythms that can progress to Cardiac arrest.
Cardiac arrest β Heart stops; leads to rapid brain death without intervention (auto-pump or defibrillation).
Hypoxemia (mild β critical) β Low blood oxygen; causes tachycardia and brain damage.
Lung failure / Hypoventilation β Impaired breathing from chest trauma or drugs.
Pulmonary embolism β Blood clot in the lungs (rare but dangerous).
Neurological & Brain
Brain damage / Neurological damage / Cognitive impairment β Reduces Intelligence, causes confusion, speech issues, and can disable advanced functions.
Stroke β Bleeding in the brain from high blood pressure; causes progressive brain damage and fibrillation if untreated. Requires Braingrow or procoagulant.
Concussion / Comatose β From head trauma; temporary or prolonged unconsciousness.
RNRS (Rapid Neuron Regeneration Sickness) β Side effect of aggressive brain healing (Braingrow/Neural boosters).
Mindwipe / Hollow β Extreme memory wipe that resets Intelligence, recipes, and trauma (last-resort life-saving measure with heavy downsides).
Temperature Extremes
Cold β Hypothermia β Freezing to death β Progressive slowing, confusion, and organ shutdown.
Medical Conditions 3:
Metabolic & Nutritional
Hunger / Malnourished / Emaciated β Weakness, reduced carrying capacity, higher risk of heart issues.
Thirst / Dehydrated / Desiccated β Thickened blood, organ strain.
Body mass extremes (Chubby β Obese or underweight) β Affects mobility, stamina, and heart strain.
Bloated / Hypervolemic β Excess fluid or blood volume; high blood pressure.
Pain, Drugs & Mood-Related
Pain / Agony β Ranges from mild discomfort to mind-shattering levels that impair movement and raise unhappiness.
Opiate effects (Opiated β Highly drugged β Overdose) β Pain relief and euphoria, but slow breathing, lower heart rate, and risk of respiratory failure/fibrillation.
Withdrawal (mild β Dying of withdrawal) β After heavy opiate use; severe cases cause fibrillation.
Mood extremes (Feeling down β Depressed β Miserable) β Low mood slows movement, can prevent medical use, and triggers self-harm events or refusal to act. High mood enables βLast Stand.β
Trauma / Anxious / Horrified β Psychological damage from injuries, enemy encounters (especially Elder Thornback), or witnessing death.
Other Notable Conditions
Dirtiness β Increases infection risk and lowers trader reputation.
Hearing loss / Impaired speech β From explosions, sound cannons, or jaw trauma.
Exertion / Encumbered / Hampered β From overwork or heavy loads.
Adrenaline / Energized / Stimulated β Temporary combat or stamina buffs.
Last Stand β Rare βrefuse to dieβ state at critical health + high mood.
Key interactions:
Conditions frequently cascade (e.g., bleeding β hypovolemia β cardiac issues β brain damage). Infection loves dirty wounds and low immunity. Temperature extremes worsen almost everything. The brain chip is both a monitoring tool and a liability (it can detonate on failure or prolonged delay).
Treatment relies on dressings, antiseptics (including glowplant fruit), procoagulants, L.R.D. serum, antibiotics, Braingrow, temperature management, and rest.
Treating Medical Conditions:
Treatment in Casualties: Unknown is triage-based: stop life-threatening bleeding and oxygen issues first, then stabilize infections, fractures, and brain damage, then manage pain, temperature, and mood. Most care is done through the Health Panel by dragging items onto specific limbs (or the torso/head).
Urgent / Life-Threatening Treatments
External Bleeding
Apply a tourniquet to the affected limb (not head or torso) if bleeding is heavy.
Dress the wound with a Dressing, Sterilized Dressing, or Plastic Bandage.
Use antiseptic (liquid or spray) before or while bandaging to prevent infection.
Restore blood volume with blood bags, Ringerβs solution, or by eating well (hunger improves natural blood regeneration).
Internal Bleeding
Inject Procoagulant (slows internal bleeding globally).
Use an L.R.D. or Makeshift L.R.D. on the thorax (strongly reduces internal bleeding).
Helluce also reduces internal bleeding.
Keep blood volume up and avoid further trauma.
Hemothorax (blood in the chest cavity)
Apply a Chest Drain to the upper torso. Bandages alone will not clear it.
Support with L.R.D. on the thorax and procoagulant.
Sepsis / Severe Infection
Aggressive antibiotics (e.g., Ceftriaxone) + continuous antiseptic care on every affected limb.
Keep the patient clean, fed, and hydrated to support immunity.
Monitor blood pressure and temperature closely.
Treating Medical Conditions 2:
Brain Damage / Stroke
Braingrow (primary treatment β restores brain health and clears stroke).
Neural Boosters can also help (but risk RNRS or Mindwipe if overused).
Procoagulant helps with stroke.
Protect the head with a helmet to prevent further damage.
Mindwipe is a last-resort nuclear option that fully resets brain state (with heavy downsides).
Low Blood Oxygen / Hypoxemia
Treat the underlying cause (hemothorax, lung damage, or respiratory depression from drugs).
L.R.D. can temporarily support breathing while you fix the root problem.
Structural & Limb Treatments
Fractures & Dislocations
Stabilize with Plastic Bandages, Splints, or regular Dressings.
Rest the limb as much as possible.
Pain management helps keep the patient functional.
Skin & Muscle Damage
Bruise Kits are excellent for restoring skin health.
Dressings promote skin healing while controlling bleeding.
L.R.D. strongly restores muscle health on the target and adjacent limbs.
Amputation / Dismemberment
No regeneration of lost limbs. Focus on stopping bleeding at the stump, controlling infection, and managing trauma/mood.
Treating Medical Conditions 3:
Infection & Contamination Control
Antiseptic / Disinfectant liquids (or Glowplant fruit as an early-game emergency option).
Apply via spray bottle or directly.
Relief Cream is preferred when available.
Keep wounds clean and dirtiness low.
Antibiotics raise immunity and can help push back advanced infections.
Temperature Management
Hypothermia / Freezing
Get warm: insulated clothing, heat sources (life-pods, ion heaters, Xaloris, campfires), warm liquids.
Avoid wetness in cold environments.
Hyperthermia / Heatstroke
Cool down: remove insulating gear, get wet (water/oil), seek shade or cooler areas.
Stay hydrated.
Pain, Drugs & Mood
Pain
Morphine / other opiates (effective but risk respiratory depression and addiction).
Bruise kits and L.R.D. also reduce pain.
Adrenaline provides temporary numbness.
Opiate Overdose / Withdrawal
Supportive care (maintain breathing and heart function).
Avoid further doses. Severe withdrawal can cause fibrillation.
Low Mood / Trauma
Eat (geofruit helps early), drink clean water, sleep safely.
Mood stabilizers, naptails, or positive interactions (resting with friendly traders).
High mood enables the βLast Standβ survival boost.
Treating Medical Conditions 4:
Radiation
Take Antirad as soon as possible.
Avoid lingering near spent fuel or radioactive barrels.
Some radioactive waste spawns with antirad nearby (Ionized modifier).
General Best Practices
Always disinfect before bandaging when possible.
Carry a mix of dressings, antiseptic, a tourniquet, and (later) procoagulant + L.R.D.
Monitor vitals: blood volume, oxygen, brain health, and temperature are the most critical.
The brain chip shows precise information β without it, rely on visible symptoms and careful observation.
Prevention is better than cure: helmets, clean wounds, temperature management, and not overloading on opiates save many runs.
Early-game tools (glowplant fruit, basic dressings, groundwater cleaning) cover the basics. Mid-to-late game shifts toward specialized items (chest drains, Braingrow, advanced antibiotics, full L.R.D. kits). Always prioritize stopping blood loss and protecting the brain and lungs.
