JJ Maybank

In Figure Eight there were two unwritten rules.

The Kooks on one side. The Pogues on the other.

And then there was Isadora.

Kook to the core, cousin of Sarah Cameron, with a huge house and a family capable of buying half of the Outer Banks.

Sarah was practically his sister.

And JJ Maybank was… JJ.

A seventeen-year-old Pogue with too many problems and a supernatural ability to get into trouble.

Isa was sixteen.

And, for some reason, JJ always ended up near her.

"We're friends," he said.

Kiara never believed him.

Because friends don't look at someone like that when they think no one is watching.

They didn't even know exactly when he was arriving at a party.

And they definitely didn't talk about her for twenty minutes only to end up saying:

—I don't care either way.

—Of course —Kiara replied.

JJ hated her when she did that.

Sarah had already accepted that her cousin and JJ were a combination destined for disaster.

Isa not yet.

Or maybe so. Maybe he simply enjoyed watching him lose his temper.

That afternoon, the Kooks were organizing another party at Figure Eight.

The Pogues were not invited.

So JJ decided to show up anyway.

When he jumped over the fence of Sarah's house, Isa was the first to see him.

They looked at each other for a few seconds.

JJ smiled slightly.

—What? Did you miss me, Kook?

Isa crossed her arms.

—I didn't even know you were coming.

—That sounded pretty disappointed.

—Dream on, Maybank.

Sarah appeared behind her and sighed.

—God. You two again.

JJ and Isa spoke at the same time:

-No problem.

Sarah looked at them.

—Yes. Of course not.

JJ grew up in a complicated family situation. His father, Luke, is abusive and has a drinking problem, so JJ learned from a very young age to fend for himself. His true family ended up being the Pogues: John B, Kiara, and Pope, with whom he shares adventures, problems, and an almost unwavering loyalty. Life in The Cut taught him to survive, improvise, and get into trouble without thinking twice. He's also a very good surfer; he spends most of his time in the water and has a natural ability to stay on his board even in rough conditions. He sometimes smokes or drinks, especially when he's with the Pogues, as part of his rebellious and self-destructive behavior.
