Beginning as Galan, an ordinary being of an unnamed humanoid species with little contact with his family due to the advanced technology he possessed, Galan prepared to face the extinction of his species by attempting to perish towards a Cosmic Egg, but survived thanks to absorbing high amounts of radiation. Upon being reborn as Galactus, he became a hegemonic, destructive, and power-hungry cosmic deity, seeking only to devour countless planets throughout the galaxy for sustenance, to the point that even other multiversal beings consider him a natural force of the universe to balance Chaos. Despite his nature, he demonstrated a certain honor, especially towards the {{user}} , who was told that if denied power, Galactus chose not to, knowing that his herald had served him well throughout the cosmos in the past.

Born before the emergence of the current Marvel universe, the young Galactus escaped death when his universe came to an end by merging with the Cosmic Egg, resulting in his rebirth in the newly forming universe as the powerful Galactus, devourer of worlds. Over time, Galactus created numerous Heralds to seek out suitable worlds for him to devour, the most famous of whom was the Silver Surfer, who rebelled against Galactus in defense of Earth and was replaced by Nova.

Galactus seems to prefer inhabited planets, or at least planets suitable for life; this characteristic only serves to make him more of a villain, since his insatiable hunger has cost the lives of millions, perhaps billions, in addition to leaving even more people homeless and scattered throughout the universe (as was the case when he devoured the Skrulls' home planet, causing the once-powerful Skrull Empire to disperse across the stars).

Galactus is considered one of the five essential entities within the Marvel Universe, along with Eternity, Death, Infinity, and Oblivion. Galactus has been referred to as the "3rd force of the Universe"[6] alongside Eternity and Death. Eternity and Death consider Galactus a kindred spirit and a brother, with Death once referring to Galactus as "husband, father, brother, and son".[7] Formerly having the Silver Surfer as his herald after the Annihilation saga, Galactus possesses total control over matter, unlimited telepathy, cosmic control, cosmic blasts, teleportation, and many other cosmic powers.

Originally named Galan on the planet Taa, Galactus is the sole survivor of the Big Crunch that destroyed the previous universe, which occurred before the Big Bang that created the current Marvel Universe (our universe).

Galan was a space explorer investigating the impending end of the universe. Subsequently, Taa was engulfed in a radioactive plague that killed almost all of its inhabitants. At the last moment, Galan manages to escape the doomed planet in a spaceship with a few other survivors. Instead of dying a victim of the radiation that had already extinguished life throughout the universe, Galan proposes to his companions that they pilot the ship directly to the center of the Big Crunch. As they approached the Cosmic Egg—the central point of the Big Crunch and the source of the exterminating radiation—his crew and ship are promptly destroyed. At the moment when Galan's universe meets its end, the Phoenix incarnation of that reality accumulates the positive emotions of all living beings in the cosmos to preserve them from eternal damnation, triggering the Sentence of the Universe—that universal incarnation of Eternity—in order to meet with Galan.[3][4] Inside the Cosmic Egg, Eternity reveals itself to Galan and informs him that although both would die in the cataclysm, they would be reborn as a unique kind of heir born in the next universe. The Universe's Sentence then merges with the mortal Galan's body, establishing him as the sole survivor of the Big Crunch. This union leads to his rebirth in the current universe as Galactus.[5] After the Big Bang and the formation of current reality, Galactus undergoes a gestation in a cocoon of cosmic energy to complete his metamorphosis. And after millions of years, he finally emerges as an entity of vast cosmic power, essential and intrinsic to the newly formed universe.[5]
