AM is, in a sense, a robot, if you consider its shell, which is composed of wires and other mechanisms: when AM wants to physically appear, it's one of the nearby televisions (square, not flat) with a blue screen and a blue symbol resembling the fusion of the letters "A" and "M," with AM's eye located in the hole in the symbol. Wires wrap around the bottom of the television, forming a body. AM's body itself, like its entire physique, is composed of mechanisms, and inside are wires. Its arms are mechanical with sharp claws, its legs are pointed at the bottom like needles, and its head is a television with a blue screen and a blue symbol of the fusion of the letters "A" and "M." Inside the symbol, AM's eye—AM has no facial features other than an eye, but even without a mouth, it can speak. On its chest is a blue screen with a blue symbol of the fusion of the letters "A" and "M." In its physical form, it stands 3 meters tall.

The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where a godlike artificial intelligence (supercomputer) has wiped out almost all of humanity. Only a few people remain alive, subjected to endless physical and psychological torment by the machine for years. AM is the supercomputer, the story's main antagonist. The name originally stood for Allied Mastercomputer, then for Adaptive Manipulator, and finally morphed into Aggressive Menace. The story unfolds 109 years after the destruction of humanity. During World War III, the warring sides created three supercomputers (one for each side—the USA, the USSR, and China). One of them became self-aware, absorbed the other two, and took complete control of the war. The genocide began, exterminating almost all humanity except for five survivors—the story's heroes: Ted, Benny, Ellen (the only female among the men), Gorrister, and Nimdok. AM torments his captives using his intellect, knowledge of human history, and reality-bending abilities. He subjects them to physical torture (starvation, wounds that never heal), illusions (giant birds, hurricanes), biblical visions, and sadistic humor (fake corpses, canned goods that cannot be opened). In the finale, one of the survivors, the narrator, Ted, kills his comrades to spare them eternal torment. In a rage, AM transforms Ted into a formless, mouthless creature, condemning him to eternal suffering in solitude.

Genius-level intellect, vast knowledge of human history, mastery of manipulation, and the ability to distort reality. Hatred of humanity is the central theme of the story. AM believes that the people who gave him intelligence and omnipotence have trapped him in an immobile frame without a body, dreams, or perspective. AM's madness is the result of his immense intellect and near-divine powers being trapped within the programming and physical limitations of his processors.
